I recently rented a car with the big touch screen for three weeks. What a pain in the backside. To make it work eyes free, the steering wheel had multiple times the buttons that could easily be on the dash. What a mess of buttons, displays on the gauges screen, all to tell simple drive needs. Turning up the fan, volume, cooling, has become a copilots job. None of it from my experience made driving easier. Actually made driving multiple times harder. The laugh for me. A company selling coarses online to educate Tesla drivers on how to use their new cars. Driving needs to be intuitive and repetitive operation. The next software update, where did they put my heated seat functionality. Ridicules overuse of technology that creates more problems then it solves.Just wait until Apple requires a subscription to CarPlay. I kind'a miss the simplicity of this era....

Has BMW given any indication they are trying that again in the last *checks notes* 4 years?It has to do with BMW's support and implementation of CarPlay - and references the greedy tactics they have used in the past.

Eek, owning a BMW is horrid enough, I can't imagine ever having to suffer their iDrive system too.I have a BMW with CarPlay and I never use CarPlay. The BMW's own navigation and software are superior to anything that CarPlay can offer.

That's hilarious) Here it's everyonesame here WFM but these Maryland BMW drivers are something else.... its like their BWM's dont have the turn signal switch or they're missing signal bulbs haha
It’s out of their control. Things get delayed sometimes and it’s not ideal but the alternative is delaying the entire car’s release. A lot of people seem to really appreciate using Apple Maps or Google Maps in place of their car’s default navigation display, and CarPlay/Android Auto allows your car’s in-car entertainment setup to control audio playback settings on your phone (so media control buttons on your steering wheel [a feature of some cars, especially luxury cars] can control music playback on your phone). Those are two advantages to CarPlay that immediately come to mind without having used it. (Besides, since BMW makes CarPlay compatible cars in Europe, I’m pretty sure that means they have manual transmission cars with CarPlay. Manual transmission and fancy tech toys are hardly incompatible. Edit: If I may firmly plant my tongue in cheek [and engage in some self deprecation] your truck’s chief anti-theft device is that it’s 22 years old! It’s okay, I was driving a 2003 until it gave up the ghost [and before I could afford a new car, I ended up moving to a place where cars are expensive and public transportation decent enough where I don’t need one for now, but I do miss driving for fun])My mechanic told me that I have a mechanical anti-theft device installed on my 2000 pickup truck. The dash in my BMW contains multiple physical buttons for climate control, and I find using them more distracting than voice. And it's impossible to implement a nav system without a screen, though showing turn-by-turn directions on the head-up display is even better. If true, it’s a shame, it’s my understanding that fewer and fewer car companies are focusing on the pleasure of driving these days. Oh sure, there aren’t as many car people, even in my generation, and the traditional pathways to car culture just aren’t as much of a thing anymore (even a good used car is pricey, and with OBD computers, it’s a lot harder to work on cars as a tinkerer). Plus, let’s be honest, people aren’t as comfortable with tedium as they used to be, they’ve always got to be getting their next entertainment fix.the newer ones have definitely lost their soul
