Ummm this just seems like now officail supported but car manufactures still need to build out their own 'made for car" interface no?

If so i had this in my old car already:

(sorry its blurry)

Unless i'm viewing something wrong here? I had full interaction with iPod options on the display.

How they can work on this since 3 years and the iOS4 is available only since last June

Just mount an iPad

I mounted my iPad in my car the first day it came out. With Bluetooth and a Verizon MiFi, I have no desire to use an automakers UI, I have everything I need and more in front of me.

Unless your system can display video output from iPod, then no, it's not the same.

your old car is just a link to the iPod and remote it.

The new thing on BMW is the full interface of the Apple product, like you put a second screen on your iPhone or iPod, so you have all the interface of you iPod not a poor design of the car manufacturer with less function

Oh thats what it does.

I mean i did that with my iPod/Zune with A/V out...but i guess its all one dock now so thats neat.

Will probably still make you be parked to watch video.

It matches all of the features of the then iPods in 2005. Kinda bold saying its poor design. Best iPod integration i've used....hopefully this works better and 3rd parties like Pioneer also use it.

very true! The fact that I've had iPod/iPhone integration in my KIA since 2008 kinda defeats the purpose of this. I too can control everything from my music to my apps and even play youtube through the speakers in my car using my head unit! hahaha... and it only cost $150! Curious to see how much this will cost BMW drivers!

Err. Not to sound like a jerk but have did you actually read the article. It is not just the outputting of sound. It replaces the user interface when connecting your iPod to it.

I don't believe your Korean car supports the video output from the iPod/iPhone that is being referred in the article.

BMW supports the iPhone for a long time already! I even dare to say that it started in the middle of 2004 in the USA (Info I found on the net)

I have a current BMW and I have a plugged in iPod with 80GB which is accessible over the iDrive and I can browse my playlists, shuffle etc. and my iPhone is connected via the iPhone adapter to the vehicle using the car's antenna for better signal and charging the battery. The iPhone is also connected via Bluetooth to my car and I can make and accept calls with a single button click.

What this is all about is to make this experience even better, to make you see your album covers, genius mixes etc. and adapt all the future features of mobile products (in this case the best one - the iPod/iPhone) and architect it in a whole new, more flexible way which makes it a no effort to update the car interface!

Well, enough said :) Cool to have a BMW :p

All the best from Munich! :)

Is this an iPod integration or an iPhone integration? If I have to put my iPhone on airplane mode just to use it with this system, then it's no deal.

Also, the video makes this look cool, but I would have to see it in action before I would actually consider it. That iDrive thing in the BMW is something that people are constantly complaining about because it's too complicated. How 'bout a touch screen, guys?

It seems like its a combined effort with the feature.

SO some things my head unit didn't do....album art (though i thought i could swear some newer headunits do album art)....of course you couldn't do video through the iPod connector but A/V out is a standard on after market indash navigation.

What the benefits look like will be smoother performance if they play together nicely and support for the newer features like Genius.

I want to know though what features the iPod Out actually outputs. Because again, it still looks like BMW is creating a custom interface to work with their system.

Most people would go European as oppose to Domestic for race inspired cars.

Good thing for me it's based on a British car then.
;)

Back on topic... my old set-up:

Yeah - it's not the interface but it was eerily similar and displayed album artwork from the iPod.

would like to see app integration too. Maps and other Nav software could very much utilize this, but I bet that goes against BMW, Audi, Lexus etc selling your their own Nav systems and service.

I've been driving BMWs long before using Apple products, and this intrigues me very much. When iDrive first came out, it was pretty cumbersome. They did a lot of upgrades and improvements to the UI, but at some instances it was even more confusing. Having near complete iPhone/iPod control on the screen is going to be infinitely times easier. I remember when the system would just alphabetize every song and not give me access to playlists and also podcasts. If you don't understand why this is a big deal, then you probably haven't had extensive time with iDrive, COMAND, MMI, or any other similar onboard car systems. I always figured they would one day at least be able to put up album covers.

Now, if they would be able to use Google Maps instead of a CD/DVD based navigation system...
