2004 ZHP here! Such a great car, but I doubt you'll see integration of this going that far back. Oh well, it's time for an e92 335i xDrive M-sport anyways!

Cool! I LOVE my '04 ZHP sedan. It is a very fun car to drive-I still grin like a little school boy when I get into and drive my automobile!

Yeah-I know it is wishful thinking having the 'ipod-out' integration in our E46's.:(

by the way, in the video.... didn't they say the "APPs" will also work with the iDrive? If it's true then....SICKNESS

When here in the UK I have to press a button on my integrated SatNav every time I start the car confirming that I will remember to look through the windscreen every once in a while when I'm driving and, as far as I know, in the US many vehicle manufacturers won't even allow you to do anything on the SatNav unless you're parked up, I really don't see Apple or BMW allowing you to play Angry Birds whilst you're doing 70.

I dont like BMW...its big kid car's. Plus Merc's Command system can display video from iPhone/iPod even when you drive ....you need forbidden code tho:D

I own a BMW with iDrive and my iPod hooked up and the biggest issue I see with the setup is that iDrive only recognizes and functions optimally with less than 256 directories (e.g. playlists, artists, podcast folders, etc). Beyond 256 directories, iDrive begins to choke, not display the correct/complete information, or even reboot itself from overloading the cache it's filling from the iPod/iPhone. I hope they offload all of the directory functions to the iPod with this new feature and regain full functionality of the connected iPod:)

Um. 3 years. They've been working on this for THREE YEARS. Way to go guys. Let's see if we can get back to the moon in the next three thousand years.

I don't think the Germans have ever been able to get a man even close to the moon, and probably never will!

Not true. Depth of field is a function of lens aperture and sensor size.

I didn't say it wasn't about the sensor, just that the lens is probably more important. You can add a lens to an iPhone and get some depth. Of course if you have a big enough sensor, you can increase the depth, but that's not what I'm talking about for the one shot in this video. Most of it was flat anyway.

Take that Sync®!

Like this better. UI & iOS updated by Apple. Does Microsoft's Sync have a way of updating their Sync technology and who does it and how is it done?

Plus, as usual, UI looks much better than sync.

And if this moves from car manufacturer to car manufacturer, you take your iPod and iOS "with you" on your next car purchase. If I understand the future of this correctly.

Looks good. :apple:

Only catch is that you can get Sync in a Ford.... Right now you have to have a BMW to get this. I'm not willing to spend the premium for a BMW, I'll wait for Honda to do this.

Nice F Bomb

Anyone else notice when he's scrolling through the letters that when he gets around F there's something (a song or playlist) that says **** Off? I couldn't pause it in the right spot to get a screen cap, but I'm sure someone else could. :)

Do companies like Pioneer have to pay a licensing fee to take advantage of this feature?

If not why would any company continue to waste money on their own half-assed GUIs. Most of them use the ugliest fonts and way, way over complicate things.

And hopefully its something that current aftermarket HUs can do with an upgrade.

I have a Range Rover Sport which has a built in iPod connector - I bought a second hand Nano just for the convenience of not having to remember to bring my iPod with me and plug it in/take it out all the time. It just lives in the car and I forget about it.

A headerless unit wouldn't necessarily be a consumer product - it could be a unit supplied by the manufacturer that can be removed from the car and connected to a Mac/PC to set up and sync with music etc. As long as it was clear that it was an Apple product, Apple would benefit from the aura effect.
We all know Apple is unlikely to license their iPod hardware franchise to anyone else. And the BMW/Range Rover/Lexus version of this headless iPod is going to be $500 and up -- for what amounts to a crippled version of a $150 iPod. I just don't see how you could go wrong with an off-the-shelf device that supports the new "iPod Out" feature (with a display you may never use), at least compared to what your Range Rover dealer is going to rake you over the coals for some customized monstrosity.

Honestly, to get a car manufacture to punt and allow you to have your iPod interface through their car stereo to an off-the-shelf iPod is more a consumer win than anything that I think you are suggesting.

It's certainly better than the current situation where they use a crusty old 40GB hard drive (minus the space used by the Nav maps subscription) with a music naming convention of Disk1, Track1, etc. And charge $1500 for the privilege or make you upgrade to the heated leather seat option to get.

I'm just glad at least BMW has figured out that they suck at the car audio experience and are (optionally) turning it over to Apple who knows what they are doing.

YMMV, but probably not. ;)

Hopefully Audi will have this feature soon as well. Then again, I'm not going to base my car buying decision on this feature alone.

Our MINI has a pretty decent iPod interface already, that works similarly as the ipod classic. But this sounds even better.

The aftermarket head unit business must be a tough one these days as there are fewer and fewer cars that can accommodate one without substantial modifications if at all!

As with most BMW options be assured this will cost $$$$$

Too bad bmws are so unreliable. My m5 was in shop twice a month for the two years that I owned it. Keep it BMW.

Ha.

While it may not do everythign like genius list, my roommate bought for me a device that hooks up to my Toyota's radio that lets me control my ipod (and iphone though the iphone bitches about it not being compatible but works anyways) through the radio. It lets me choose between 6 playlists or all songs on the ipod and it displays the text of the songs playing. And the place he bought it from has add ons for several different car manufacturers.

May not be exactly like the ipod's interface but honestly, it's great for playing in the car cause it lets me easily switch songs and what not from my car's radio player.

Oh, and my roommate would totally agree with the guy above me. I had a BMW and he was nice enough to repair it when it broke. He *HATED* that car. He's an engineer and he would go through a list of badly engineered stuff on the car (from some one who doesn't work on cars it was reasonabley reliable for a 20+ year old car but apparently BMW designed it in a way that made it annoying to work on and had some really stupid designs on the car that made it more likely to break. I will say the electronics on the car were crappy and broke a lot).

It lets me choose between 6 playlists or

Those kind of cd-changer proxy interfaces have been around for sometime and I find QUITE GHETTO. Better than an FM transmitter, but the whole point in having an iPod is to be able to select anything at will out of a huge library.

Well, seeing as I generally just want the play all my songs option, it works perfectly well for me. And honestly, if you really have that many playlists you have to choose between, it would get really annoying trying to switch between them all and drive at the same time. Really radio interface in a car should be kept relatively simple. And I'm not buying a new BMW just to have full control over my ipod/iphone.

And what do you find ghetto about it? I have it installed where I can hide the connection cord quite easily (I never use the ashtray nor has it ever been used and in my car so it's clean it makes the perfect iphone holder *grin*). Certainly beats an aux out that plugs into the headphone jack and you still have to use your iphone to control the music. Or even worse (what I had before), smething that plugs into your ipod/iphone that lets you play it over a radio station. Now *that* is "ghetto".

Agreed. There's a "trick" to make the iPod in my 3G iPhone (pre-iOS4) to connect to my Volvo S80 built-in interface so I'm not simply stuck using the changer toggles on the steering wheel. I'd rather have the full-on iPod experience on the iPod (iPhone) itself - and where I have it plugged into the dash of my car it's in the perfect place where I can choose visually via the iPhone's own interface my playlists and songs with associated artwork.

Unfortunately, this was broken after I updated to iOS4, and I'm currently trying to find a way to get past it to get full control again. *sigh* I know Volvo HATES the idea of a driver sneaking a peek at the iPod to choose a song (safety, you know) but I detest having to blindly listen to music via the wheel toggles.

Really? What did you keep doing to it? :D

I think many others, including myself, would argue otherwise.

On topic - Will be interesting to see how this goes. Too bad my '04 e46 can't do this. Guess I'll just have to live with my dice unit.

Besides, DOF has little to do with the camera, it's mostly about the lens.

Thanks for changing my name in the quote to "full of loss" and making it into a personal attack. Very mature of you.

To say "DOF has little to do with the camera" is absolute 100% nonsense and shows a lack of knowledge about photography. Depth of Filed is a function of BOTH the lens aperture and the sensor size.

I suggest sticking with Canon Elphs or Sony CyberShots, as they seem to be the limit of your expertise. Leave the discussion of photography to people who don't think that "DOF has little to do with the camera" and avoid showing your total ignorance.

BMW are good vehicles, but they are way behind Ford when it comes to this technology.

This isn't just the iPod. It is SYNC voice and visual integration of iPod, phone, internet, navigation and automobile functions. The 2011 Edge and MKX will have it first. I believe Fiesta and the 2012 Focus are next. I know not everyone is a Ford or Microsoft fan, but this is pretty amazing technology.

This statement made me laugh.

We don't care. We DRIVE our bimmers.

Same here. :(
