since i said eMac instead of iMac, but beyond that, your post has no bearing what-so-ever. i wasn't judging his method or how much the bags weigh and how they correspond to someone picking up on the difference between two 20 pound bags of soil and and a 50 lb eMac. I'm not a detective or a cop. but you guys ought to be. especially with you keen sense of guilt and innocence.

when i bought my powerBook and G5 they didn't put them on a scale before i left to make sure they weighed in at the proper amount per package.

Oh but it does have meaning... If he had said that there were two 10 pound bags of soil, it would have been hard to believe that one could walk out of the store carrying something half the weight of what it actually is. You know it's a computer, so you know it has some weight and if you aren't feeling all of that you certainly would be skeptical. My post had plenty of bearing to the topic and suspiciousness of the situation.

In retrospect, I should've taken pictures, but that wasn't my first thought of course. The only reason the first thing I did besides box it up and put it in the car is just post it on these forums, is because I thought people would be interested/ laugh at my terrible luck about this as it happened. Now people are trying to blame me as if I took it myself or something. No, I didn't. Believe me or not, I don't really care. Believe what you want to believe.

Maybe it's the fact that you were/are so shady about everything and you kept feeding thoughts that provoked questions.

i was...

speaking of your post in response to mine. if you take it in.... damn. nevermind, this is a worthless waste of my time. have fun guys! and good luck on finding the bad guys!

oh and to the new mac owner... enjoy your g5!

peas out

this reminds me

I bought a usb 2.0 pci card for my computer and when I got th box home....nothing was in it. I thought it felt pretty light but I knew the piece was really small aswell and never gave any thought to it. I didn't have a problem taking it back, but I'm sure they would have had a problem if it happened again.

oh my god... this reminds me of the last guy yesterday who claimed a guy was racist... this is ridiculous.. you all blame and point fingers so freakin easily... it's unbelievable... grow up..

and as stated. the guy who just recieved the G5.. wish i had one :) have fun with it.

fwiw:

- when my g5 showed up damaged, i took pictures and posted them before taking the thing to the apple store.

- i found the g5, boxed, to be unexpectedly heavy. had it been 15 pounds too light, and it was the first time picking it up, i wouldn't have given it a second thought.

- i've seen people haul towers out of the chicago apple store. the genius bar is on the second floor, so by the time the (presumed) owners reached the front door, it's anyones guess from where the tower was initally grabbed.

- people @ MR like posting the outrageous things that happen to them. i think it's natural for someone who paid thousands of dollars for a couple bags of dirt to want to jump on here right away and report it. just takes a minute.

another poster mentioned a box full of dirt leaking, which is the post he was responding two about the bags. also i have purchased 20 and 15 pound bags of dirt at my local nursery. and for the previous posters, it's a dual G5 not an iMac, and yes you could post from a car with a laptop and bluetooth phone or pda and bluetooth phone. you sherlock holmes types need to review the clues a little better before you go blowing the case. sheesh.

When I "joined" MacRumors, I never imagined I'd be reading analyses of dirt bags!!

(ya like that double or triple pun thing? :p)

I wonder if Apple will be watching the G5 ebay sales :D

The thing is, they know the serial number, right? Who ever has this machine can get caught if they ever have to bring it in for repair....

Maybe it's the fact that you were/are so shady about everything and you kept feeding thoughts that provoked questions.

Not everyone knows the name of every Apple store (ie: Apple Store Plano.....Apple Store Willow Bend.... I guess it's the same thing to most people), and not everyone knows that their computer weighs 44.4 lbs like you do, nerd.

Also, I wouldn't have taken pictures either. What does that prove? If I was a detective like you are, I'd think that this guy emptied out a G5, put dirt bags into it, and THEN took the picture.

I wouldn't have weighed the bags, either. What's the point? The point is that there is no computer in there, not that there was a 4.4 lb weight differential between a real G5 PowerMac and two 20 lb bags of dirt. I don't bring a scale to the computer store. Sorry.

Heck, I may have been tempted to post here before I returned it, since I also would have thought that people here would get a kick out of hearing this. Or I would at least call a friend and get a good laugh out of it. Seems like something I would do.

The guy has posted enough times at MR for us to assume that if what he's saying is just a big joke, then the posting he did before this was part of the longest set-up to a bad joke we've ever seen.

Do something. Get a hobby, or go watch CSI and take a rest, Sherlock.

I agree that people are a little on edge. Maybe it is the dearth of decent rumors that is getting to us? (color iPod? woo-hoo!)

haha this is the funniest thread i've read in a long time.

anyway, whether he's being shady or not, if he did actually try and scam apple why would he come here and post about it???

have fun with your new G5... if it starts growing leaves you might want to run

What did the bags score on Xbench?! :D

Why do people think that people need to lighten up? Everyone should have a right in posting whatever they feel like, especially when no evidence is given and the facts don't add up in this situation. It's total spam.

ok i think his story's fishy.

he can't post online unless he is connected to the internet: then how is he online in a car? unless he lives in a giant hotspot then he can't really be online. (unless a phone works but is that possible yet?)

it sounds like theres multiple stores. (he hasn't set his mind on which one he went to)

and why is there dirt in a computer box? just doesn't sound right you would think it would leak out and end up leading to suspision....

well im sorry if im incorrect but thats just what it seems like to me: a hoax.

You need to be more informed before accusing someone of deception.

Extremely basic concept #1: Mobile phones can be used to access the web.

Extremely basic concept #2: Topsoil can be contained within a plastic bag.

Well enough to be able to view, navigate, and post on forums???? While driving?

I still don't know what the story is here, and I really don't care. Just asking about the mobile web thing.

You can use a notebook computer to access the web through your cell phone. It's kinda slow, but it's quicker than dialup.

I know you can't take pictures in the car, which is why I couldn't understand how you were on the way to the Apple store while still posting here.
To be fair, he might be posting from a laptop in the car using a wireless hotspot... but this does sound a bit fishy to me too. Not inconceivable though.
