the issue is today i get a call from a random number claiming to be the owner of the phone. and they say they know everything that went down and the phone is involved in a bigger situation an aparent kidnapping. They say they know i am a victim also.

...

sound like a scam?

If that was the case, the owner would not be calling you, the detective would just take the phone and let you hang.

Won't matter what deal the owner and the new buyer make.

Just ask them to make the deal at the police station, so the detective handling the case can have the phone long enough to pull any needed info.

Ask for some callback info, so you can file a complaint against them for an extortion scheme... since they are asking for money to prevent something bad from happening to you. Along with telling you they "know where you live and work."

They're just trying to get more money from you obviously.
They want you to pay the difference of the full price of a brand new iphone.
Its a scam and the more you sit there and spend time listening or responding to them the more they think they will eventually get more of your money.
Its common sense and you shouldn't need some strangers from an internet forum to let you know that.
How much did you buy that iphone 5 for if you don't mind me asking?

where are all those craigslist lovers now? lol

Right here!! Craigslist rules!! Ebay steals a little bit of your soul and profit everytime you sell...lol. Craigslist for life!

p.s. - if you're a baller-type, then jameslist.com is for you.

That's beside the point. It's in the context of being safe from being screwed out of an iPhone or your money.

Don't be naive. You made your remark in response to "Where are the craigslist lovers?" as if you have no such issues.

JayLenochiniMac, looks like you're searching for a pointless argument. He didn't mention anything about being safe and was referencing NOT being screwed. But your warped need for verbal sparring requires you to miss HIS point and create a straw man to antagonize. Leave it alone. He said what he meant and that's that.

latest update, still have not answered their texts or calls. i blocked the number.

last contact was.
got a call at around 8pm. didnt answer.
last text was saying please call me at blah blah blah tomorrow. i work blah blah blah to blah blah blah.

so yeah they can piss off lol. im sure they will try to contact me thru another number. one thing i noticed is out of the 4 missed calls from them throughout the day not one voicemail. i know if i had a stolen phone voicemails would be everywhere.

also not sure if i mentioned this and dont feel like going back. they thought i was on simple mobile which i am not. also i was told that the seller used a text for free app to contact me so dont even bother contacting that number. that was an open invitation so i called with my number blocked and someone answered. and there would be no way that the owner of the phone would be able to have every detail of our text conversation before i bought the phone. its funny too cause the seller kept talking about when she got screwed selling a phone before someone gave her fake money.

phone was 500 by the way for who asked.

Wait and see if the piggies come knocking.

They wont.

Does the seller actually know where you live?

just the part of my city. think like upper Manhattan, west side, east side.

No.
Tell them if they call you again you will contact the police.
You did nothing wrong on your end so if something is stolen you are not the thief or have anything to do with it.
Tell them you contacted the police and if there's anything further they will inform you if they need any info or a statement.

Actually incorrect. It's still receiving stolen property. But the police should the ones doing the contacting, not the "owner". And ATT won't do crap about a stolen phone except kill the EMI number.

I'd just call ATT and ask them to give me a new number then get on with my life.

You are good, this is obviously a scam to get more money from you. In the future I recommend you stick to ebay, yes it is more expensive for sellers (and hence things are slightly more expensive) but I had nothing but great experience with them.

If you want to use CL, insist on paypal, AND use your credit card. Paypal also provides protection, and so does your credit card.

At this point I would take all information that I had and file a report. The seller of the iPhone is clearly trying to swindle money from you. No one could possibly know the details of your exchange but the people involved and the people you told, of course. As the seller is attempting to extort money (a crime) he/she should be investigated. If the cops can't find the seller then that's a bummer, but the only text/voice call I would be involved in with that seller is to tell them that I filed a police report for their attempt to extort money and if the phone is stolen then the police can handle the mess.

A new low for CL sellers indeed, but now something to be on the lookout for. Hope it all works out for you.

Right here. If you know what you're doing and how to protect yourself, I'll take CL over eBay or other online services any day.

Hate craigslist, I love eBay!! :apple:

Love paying that 10% final value fee and those stupid Paypal fess, don't you! eBay is a rip off! I know a lot of people who have been diligent sellers and then been ripped off by buyers and they have no recourse because eBay sided with the lying buyer! No thanks, I'll skip that headache.

The OP paid $500 for supposedly an iPhone 5. That's what used factory unlocked 32 gigs in mint condition are going for on ebay right now so not necessarily more expensive for the buyer.

If you're going to insist on paypal, might as well use ebay anyway when buying.

i always conduct craigslist deals with my google voice number whether selling or buying. no need to give out your real phone number

great thread to put that in.....

bc craigslist is a high class place to buy things. they make movies based on what happens on that site. this thread is a great example.

so you'd rather put your physical safety aside? nothing is "safe" when talking about losing money, but i'd rather be "physically" safe when doing a transaction

in this case...he was the buyer. pay with CC through paypal and he'll be protected. plus your CC has protection on top of paypal. What is his protection on CL when he pays with cash? absolutely nothing

That has nothing to do with this thread (getting scammed out of an iPhone or your money), but I'll comment anyway. You're highly unlikely to get stabbed or shot if you meet in a busy public place. There's nothing stopping a psycho from coming over your house and hunting you down after an eBay transaction either but that too is highly unlikely.

just like gettin scammed or buyin a stolen phone doesn't happen either ;)

but hey, doesn't have to do with this thread

Sure does. OP thought he might be dealing with a stolen iPhone until we pointed out otherwise. He most certainly would have been scammed out of more money if he followed through.
