Do they have braces for dogs? I was thinking about getting some. My dogs never seem to smile :(

You look great!
When I got my braces off years ago, my orthodontist also gave me a night retainer that looked like a boxer's mouthguard to wear while sleeping. It was clear rubber type material that my top and bottom teeth fit into perfectly. Of course, I lost it after a year. I wish I still had it, my teeth have shifted slightly over the years. :D I broke my regular top retainer recently which I started wearing again.

I had braces for about a year, and I hated every moment of it :)

It was worth it though ;)

Slip: I had braces twice because my upper teeth had two separate issues going on whereas my lower teeth were simply crowded. They had to correct the one issue on the uppers so that all that was going on with both sets was that they were crowded.

1. I had an adjustable retainer (uppers only) for about four months when I was eleven, and then shortly before my twelfth birthday, they put one bracket on each of my maxillary incisors and then one each on the last two molars. This was to fix my maxillary lateral incisor, which was so crowded that it was coming in about half an inch above where it should have been. I got this set of braces off when I was thirteen.

2. I went back on retainers until I was thirteen and a half, and then I had braces for two years after that. This time it was a full set.

My vet said that he can give my dogs veneers. As I have 3 its going to be quite expensive. I really don't want them to suffer any humiliation from other dogs when I walk them. Once the teeth are sorted I am definitely getting their teeth bleached! No question about that!

Ah thats the worst bit, feeling your own pulse makes me feel sick
But goes after about 5 mins :)
Btw, how old were you guys when you had your braces, Im 16 now and have only had them since I was 15 so I was late compared to my mates. Just wondering if Im the only late starter.

I got mine on before my 13th birthday, and off before my17th. But I had a friend who got hers on at 16, so you're not late.

Alright, I don't know WHAT you are talking about - but that HASSS to suck!

Yeah, that was a bit nonsensical, wasn't it?

My friend said it was a pernament biteplate - but really, its not, but it sort of serves that purpose.

Basically, they took these two little metal pieces that were flat on the bottom and glued them to the back of my two front teeth, the result being that I don't have a sharp biting surface to bite into things. I have to either bite into it using my back teeth(stuff like carrots) or cut it up. My front bottom teeth do rest on them, but I was told that the purpose of them was to keep my tongue away from my teeth, because it irritates the tongue. The idea is that I'll train my tongue to stay away from my teeth, so that when I'm out of my braces, I won't push my teeth out with my tongue, like I already have.

Does that make any more sense?

I'm lucky that I haven't had to worry about braces yet, though I have the sinking feeling that I will eventually. :(

Heh, Almost 15 and STILL haven't lost all my teeth. I guess one could say I take good care of them... (Yay anti-candy for 3 years for NO reason on my part), Or I stayed away from hard foods and dangerous activities.

Meh. My question is, how bad do they hurt?

Wow.
You must be healthy as a horse! I didn't lose my 12 year molars until I was 15... so have no fear. They don't hurt so bad, really. Just the first few days, because your teeth are moving all around and shifting, and biting things reallly hurts. Advil helps a lot, though, and eating a lot of ice cream isn't so horrible, either :). After a few days, you settle in. But they'll continue to hurt every Orthodontist visit for probably 6 months.

BUT IT's NOT an "OMG OUCH OUCH OUCH" kind of pain.
It's like when you do an activity you don't normally do, and you wake up sore all over. Imagine the muscle soreness feeling, but in your teeth... make sense?

I had braces as a young teenager, i had horrendously bad teeth as a child, i used to get bullied alot for it, but i never seemed to let it get me down :S

When I finally did have braces all my friends were really really supportive, my bottom teeth are badly off, in the end the orthodontist just gave up and said either id have to have 5 years more of braces on my bottom teeth or bad teeth, i chose the latter, and still don't regret it.

Hey, funny thread for MacRumors Sarah, but I welcome the change! Anyway, I'm 21 and just had my braces fitted a couple months back. They're only on 9 more months so it aint that bad. Here in the UK they cost me about £3500 which I'm guessing is round $7200 - they would have been free if I was below 16 =[

Well, I don't think I'm "healthy as a horse", but I take care of myself. Thanks for answering my questions!

I have a friend who had to practically re-learn how to play the flute for about a week when she got her braces off. :D

Ugh, I teach flute and I always cringe when students come in and inform me that they just got braces. Then we get to start aaaaall over again. It's got to be a bit painful for them. I try to be sympathetic, but I've never had braces so I don't know what it's like.

Sarah the O.P.: You had your braces for 4 years? I'm gonna have to tell my niece about that. She had hers for 2 years (got them just before her 12th birthday) and complained every single day (no, I'm not exaggerating) about having to have them on for so long.
P.S. Your teeth look great! You're a very pretty girl, just make sure you use your powers for good rather than evil... ;)

I got braces just after my senior pictures my senior year of high school, and had them on until my sophomore year in college. It could've been shorter, but I went to a university that was over 600 miles away from my orthodonist so I only saw him twice a year after high school. It was worth it, though, because my teeth look so much better. I was pretty diligent about wearing my retainer, and I think that made a lot of difference. I don't wear it now, and the bottom ones have shifted a little, but they still are pretty straight.

Now, I just have to deal with TMJ disorder. :(

Oh yes.
Braces weren't that bad, I just thought they diminished my good looks...hahahah. Well, I'm not as conceited as I sound, trust me. It's just, you sit there day after day smiling and thinking, "Wouldn't I look better without these?" And it's true. :) I got my junior pictures taken and my mommy saw them and she said she got all weepy. Hahah, :]

Did you get your top teeth straightened out?

Thos who complain about just having braces don't know the true dark side to them. Since I play low brass, and the rim of my mouthpiece just happens to lie directly on top of my teeth, it was hell. I still have scars inside my lips.

So, if you play trombone or euphonium (or any brass really), try your damndest to get Invisalign.

I hear ya on that one. In my senior year in high school I played or sang in 17 different ensembles either singing bass or playing bass trombone. I was lucky enough that my mouthpiece was large enough that it went most of the way around my braces, but still got some nipping when I was in Jazz band!

I don't think there's anything conceited about wanting to look good. It must be a great feeling to finally get them off. After my niece finally got hers off (at age 13) she spent the next few weeks feeling the front of her teeth with her tongue. And she really did look much better...

I know kind of an old thread....

but i just got my braces taken off here a week ago. I had them on for 2 years...
I never had the option of getting braces when i was a kid (my parents were very poor then) so i got them put on when i was 36 and i don't regret one minute of the agonizing pain that i went through lol :] actually the only thing i regret is that i didn't pay for them and get them earlier...

But i will have to say that after getting my retainers that is sometimes worse than the pain of the braces themselves. i am doing pretty good with wearing my retainer....

also not to be a creepy older person but you have a very pretty smile... I had found this post as i was doing research on retainers before i got mine a couple of days ago...

Never had them, of course very few kids ever got them in the 60's when I was braces age.
However, I have put braces on all three of my kids. My oldest had them on four years, my middle kid two years, my youngest should get them off in September after 2.5 years. Total cost --- Zero dollars. I was able to get my kids in the military ortho training school. A benefit of being retired military.

I had braces for three years. I remember getting them off the day before school pictures. Pure awesomeness. I couldn't stand my orthodontist, but he was the only one in town :(

But now, after 4 permanent teeth pulled (my teeth were too large for my jaw, apparently) I will probably be getting my wisdom teeth pulled, to insure that my teeth STAY straight. *sigh*

I'm glad they're finally off, at least.
