I think when Apple talks about the reasoning for removing the headphone jack, it will mainly be for waterproofing reasons. Samsung's implementation of "waterproof" smart devices has been hit or miss (i.e. half-baked)...

http://www.itechpost.com/articles/2...proof-test-phone-declared-more-vulnerable.htm

Apple won't talk about why they removed the 3.5 Jack. That's not how Apple operates. They certainly will touch base on the waterproofing and Bluetooth features.

Not that I think the iPhone 7 is introducing any must have updates over the 6s, but you'd give up current technology over what is likely to be a $20 adapter?

I probably will. I keep studio headphones in lots of locations, so I'll need several adapters, and I use my iPhone for guitar scratch tracks using the Lightning port and headphone jack simultaneously.

AD 2017

When people stop whining about headphone jacks, because every Android OEM will remove them, and everyone has bought bluetooth headphones.

I don't want bluetooth headphones. While I do want wireless headphones most if not all the ones I looked at had no more than 10 hours battery life. And when I'm travelling which is when I really need them, I like the fact that my headphones can last 30 hours without swapping out a single battery I keep in the case. Bluetooth headphones would die while I'm still out and about.

I really like the idea of the Dash/Headphones, but haven't heard great things about their sound quality. Anybody out there have a Dash that can give an impromptu review?
I think the Dash's acoustic response is fine. However the wireless issues are very real - if your phone is in your pocket then the sound quality is terrible. The only way to get decent sound out is to copy MP3s onto them.

PS: I'm not an audiophile, my main headphones are Logitech Ultimate Ears, so take what I say about Bragi with a grain of salt.

You'll be finding them on the ground as people will start losing them...
I really liked the Bragi Dash and was seriously considering them when it occurred to me that losing one was $150 gone and, really, it might as well be $300 gone because what use is half of a stereo set?

Then I found out Bragi had this $19 accessory called "the leash" which is a bit of cord that links both earpieces together. The idea being that if one falls out, the leash will stop it from disappearing (assuming the other one stays in your ear). Cool.

Which sounds great, until you realize we're back to having a cord joining the earpieces!:( So I just stuck with my $49 Costco-special Plantronics backbeat Go's

And when I'm travelling which is when I really need them, I like the fact that my headphones can last 30 hours without swapping out a single battery I keep in the case.

Bragi have somewhat addressed this. The charging pack has a built in battery so when you take the headphones out of your ear they automatically recharge. I can't remember how many charges you get before you need to plug the charger back in.

That said, the current design is only 3 hours of battery life which brings in its own issues. Doubling it to 6 would make a big difference.

and then there are the potential health concerns.

If you're concerned about electromagnetic radiation, you'll have to move off the face of the Earth — actually, out of the Solar System to be more exact — to escape it.

Radio signals from devices are just an organized form of human generated electromagnetic radiation which is already produced by the Earth in far far higher potency. You, me, your canary and my dog and everything living on planet Earth has evolved to live within that electromagnetic realm.

There is a reason my music collection is predominately in lossless format.

Lossless for listening is useless

I don't want bluetooth headphones.

They all say that until they feel the comfort of not having a cord

most if not all the ones I looked at had no more than 10 hours battery life

Sorry, but 10 hours is waaaaaay over "too much" for a day. You can't listen to more than 2 hours a day of music!

Brain cancer, brain cancer, get your brain cancer here!
Buy these wireless brain bombs, stick 'em right in your ear as close to your brain as possible. Think we were speeding up your chance of getting brain cancer before with our EMF spewing iPhones? Now, speed up your chances with our all new technology.........

The whole "Her" experience is coming faster than many think.

Can we get Siri to sound like Scarlet Johansen?

I've been using my Bragi's Dash when the Kickstarter edition came out. I personally love it but it's not without limitations. Bluetooth connection outdoors was a big problem initially but their ongoing firmware updates had made a big difference in quality and reliability over the last year in my opinion. For me personally, I use it indoors at the gym and never had any issues with it. Sound quality is as good as most wireless headphones I have if not better (with the right fit sleeve).

I have no need for most of the features on the Dash (like fitness tracking) so was really considering getting this one for the longer battery and such a low price in comparison. But I might just wait to see what Apple announces in 2 days time.

MAYBE by 2018, they'll get bluetooth right. The way it is right now, it's certainly no adequate replacement for 3.5mm, for MANY people.

Curiously, my experience has been the opposite.

Never used wired earbuds due to the cable, but a big fan of my wireless setuup (Powerbeats2) which has been flawless. Bluetooth has been rock solid, and considering Apple will likely jump to the new BT5 standard now rather than in 2018, "now" is exactly the right time to cut ties with the legacy, inferior technology.

I find this very strange. I think this must be a production issue. I walk around outside with my phone in my pocket a lot and have minimal drop outs. I don't have any music stored on them locally.

It would be great to see your evidence and qualifications supporting this.

I agree. Though I think Apples AirPods will connect to each other via a lightning connector. This will allow user to connect to the iPhone for a quick charge.
Yes and another way to drain your battery..along with your iwatch draining as well.

I think Apple is getting rid of the headphones this year to unveil wireless charging next year. Everyone will love the new sound quality but will wish all year that they could charge their phone at the same time like with the older iPhones. Then, boom, AirCharge with the option Magic Dock. Suddenly, a magical solution to a problem that could have been addressed earlier, but alas it's the :apple: way.
Yes they introduce another way for them to make even more money. Lol

I returned my Bragi Dash headphones because they sounded so terrible. I even wrote a review on Amazon about how bad they were. $300 headphones sounding like they aren't $300 headphones means they must be returned immediately.

It may be time to sell my QSC15's.

Anyone know of any solid in ear noise cancelling wireless earphones?

The Bose SoundSport headphones or the Bose Quiet Control 30

I am sure some interesting engineering has gone into these ear buds. But, paying $150 to get the same functionality that you currently get for $5.99 is absurd. It also doesn't solve the question of how to hook up your phone to a sound system that doesn't have bluetooth, battery life for long plane trips, and so on. I'll be upgrading my iPhone 5s after the Sept 7 event, but it won't be to an iPhone 7.

Well if you are playing music threw your sound system why not airplay it from your phone.

Inferior is apparently in the eye of the beholder. Wireless is superior, lower sound quality is not. Having to concern yourself with charging one more thing is not. Is there a hit on battery life streaming audio via BT vs wired headphones? There are trade-offs many iPhone users don't want to have to put up with not even addressing any use cases that are impacted by Apple's decision to dis the "jack."
