Great post. Even though he might suck and go out in flames like when Jordan went to the Wizards or Karl Malone went to the Lakers, if he wants to play then let him play.

jon

ok. now i have a beef with the favre situation. not at favre b/c of my above comments, but maybe at the packers for not granting him a release.

if that is true and if i were aaron rodgers, I would want to be using the GM's noggin' as a punching bag. There may be reasons for not releasing him (ie to a divisional rival), but man oh man, what does this say to Aaron Rodgers? The pack don't want him? maybe the Pack are trying to boost Favre's trade value?

i don't know, but it sucks for Rodgers. that much i know.

Favre may now play for the NY Jets.

This could be good news but I don't think at his age he can make as great a contribution to that team. The team will improve with him, but they will be getting killed by the pats.

It says that they have an asset that they're willing to part with- but not give away.. Noone would just give something that has any value away- that'd be crazy.. I agree this was a tough situation for Rodgers, but not for the reasons you mention..

I don't have a problem if Favre wants to keep playing but this guy is such a drama queen. It's like he retired but couldn't stand not having his name in the media all the time and people kissing his ass continuously so he had to come back because his ego is to big to not have that. Now we'll get more ESPN broadcasts of Favre playing with the Jets and it will be nothing but the commentators constantly showing 3 hours of man love for Favre while not even calling the action in the game or mentioning any other player on the field.

having grown up in wisconsin watching brett play for the packers, this just seems surreal. This is going to be worse than watching Montana play for the chiefs. my only solace is that perhaps Ill be able to see him play a few times out here on the right coast.

I don't know.

I'm as big a Packer fan as the next Wisconsinite, but I don't really feel all that bad.

Favre is getting older, we've been putting off our rebuilding season(s) for about 5 years now. Don't get me wrong, Favre is still one of the best QBs playing the game right now, but unless the Jets have a strong coach that's willing to stand up and push Favre you'll be looking at performance like the latter Mike Sherman years in Green Bay.

I think the whole debacle could have been handled better on all sides, and management managed to colossally f-up the whole situation, but I don't necessarily think of this as a bad thing. Management should have just let Favre come back and compete for the starting QB position and opened up the door for trading if he didn't want that. In all probability he would have been the starter if the goal was to win games and last year he showed that the team had good chemistry. Now Favre has to start all over with a new team and it most likely will not be pretty.

Rodgers did really well against the Cowboys last year when Favre got hurt, and if he can manage to make 2 games in a row without getting hurt in practice he might do an OK job with the team this year.

I loved watching Favre play and will probably watch more than a few Jets games this year, but it will be nice for the first time to not have my heart ripped out when we're down by 3 with less than 2 minutes left and he throws an interception into double coverage. I might actually be able to laugh at it now.:D

I can't wait for Rodgers to bomb and Ted Thompson to turn into the fool of the year. No...decade.

Seriously, Favre would have gave the Packers the best chance at winning. But Ted didn't want him. So, here we are.

Now the Jets are shaping to be a good team. They have to play New England, but they've got a great shot now. Have you seen their draft picks? All they needed was a quarterback.

And the Jets started taking preorders for Brett's jersey around midnight my time! I'm definitely going to the Chiefs vs Jets game now.

Reminds me of Montana's move to KC at the end of his career. Why don't these guys know when to call it quits? There have been so many players that have been shuffled around to 2 or 3 teams during their final twilight years. I don't see what's wrong with quitting at the top of your game. I initially thought Favre was smart for doing just that, but then this whole "unretirement" fiasco changed all that.

I think he was thinking if he could come back to GB he could grab a superbowl ring before calling it quits for good. They were so close, and could have made it I think.

That's not to say he doesn't have a chance with the Jets. Favre is one player who should be able to play until his stats drop significantly. He's still got years on him still.

Some years ago, people thought Joe Montana should retire a 49er because he was old. But when he was with the Kansas City Chiefs, he did quite well and even helped take the team to the AFC Conference championship game. I think Favre has the ability to help take the Jets to the playoffs for at least three more years. I still don't see a superbowl of course, but it will be fun to see him outperform the young kid QBs who may have more on the ball physically, but not have the wisdom of Favre.

I like how he adjusted from a very fast pass to a favorite receiver and also running the ball, to a more varied form of arsenal where he would take his time and play more strategically. He can't fire a ball to a receiver among a bunch of defenders like he used to, but he has improved field vision and plays a lot more like Steve Young or Joe Montana in their heyday.

I think the Jets will do what the Broncos of the late '90s did with an old Elway. The Jets, like the late-90s Broncos, should develop an all around offense and rely more on running the ball. In later years, Elway did not pass as much but he still got two superbowl rings which eluded him in his three previous attempts when he was the most prolific passer.

The key to Favre being successful would be to not rely too much on his passing game and work the running game. What cannot be left to chance is injury at his age. Favre needs options and a new style of football in order to maximize who is he at his age.

That being said, he still may simply be too old to successfully compete anymore as a starting quarterback. In recent years, Brad Johnson started for Dallas at age 38 but lost the top spot. Favre can potentially be the oldest starting QB at 39 if he starts well and maintains in the first couple of months.

At the very least, Favre can be a backup and still be an asset. Testaverde set a record and won a game when he was 43 and I think Favre is the better player through a long career.

Eh..it'll sell tickets. He's never played in a NY/Boston market, so he's in for a real treat. When he throws 2 TD's the crowd will cheer, and love him. When he throws 2 picks in a game, and they lose by 2 TD's the crowd will boo him, and hold up signs saying he sucks, and let the rookie play...

He and Manpen!$ will clash. The coach is a lot like Belichick; control. He won't stand for Favre to just whip the ball around.

My take; he'll start, Jets will go 6-10 at best, and Favre will be gone next season.

Emmitt Smith
Jerry Rice
Ronnie Lott
Tony Dorsett
Johnny Unitas
OJ Simpson

All should have quit before they were told to leave. Nobody remembers the 'other' teams they played with.

I think both teams are in for a bit of a struggle this year. Favre's starting out with a new coach, offense and receivers with which he has no history. The Packers are moving into a rebuilding phase but Rodger's durability will probably be an issue.

Of course Favre isn't getting any younger either and if the Jet's offensive line has any weaknesses we may see the end of the started games streak.

I don't doubt that Favre would have been the Packers best chance to win, and management should have just welcomed him back but maybe leave the option open to not start him should Rodgers or another QB show up and perform very well in training camp, but I honestly don't feel too bad about losing him either. The retirement question has come up for so long around Favre that it's almost a relief to know that even though we would probably be better with him this year, at least we know it's time to start rebuilding, and we have a young team with which to do it.

ugh, of all the ****ing teams to go to, he has to go to the jets.

**** the jets.
