They better change the name to iGriddle; the current one's got some temperature issues and I can't *wait* to see what they're like in a metal chassis.

QFT...absolutely right.
Apple selling a midrange tower at this price would kill.
Even around $999...it would still sell well.
I like the iMac but they're completely forgetting about people (in that price range) who want more expandability, don't need a monitor, or both. Mac Pro is a great machine that is too far out of the budget reach of most potential buyers.
If they announce a midtower under $1000 at WWDC, I'm all over it and will buy one as soon as we get the money. If not - I'll stick with my plans on building a Q6600 midtower after the July price drop and deal with Windows for awhile longer.

1-2 pcix slots (at least 1 double wide) (and possible cards being 8x00 series and 2900 series with maybe some past gen like the 19xx and 79xx
4 ram slots (one of their boards or two half size boads from the mac pro)
2-4 hdd slots (tool less like mac pro) (depends on space)
Yea I am a fence sitter and if steve jobs announced that he would be pushing me off the fence
My thoughts were this for a mid tower:
1 Desktop core 2 duo or xeon processor
1-2 pcix slots (at least 1 double wide) (and possible cards being 8x00 series and 2900 series with maybe some past gen like the 19xx and 79xx
4 ram slots (one of their boards or two half size boads from the mac pro)
2-4 hdd slots (tool less like mac pro) (depends on space)
1-2 disc drives
Bluetooth and wireless
Get it out the door for around 1000 base
what you're describing sounds almost like a MacPro to me...
If they made this then I would buy it. I can see two 2.5" HDDs fitting inside this:
Simply call it.... "Mac" MacMini, Mac, MacPro, MacBook Mini, MacBook, MacBook Pro.
It will be a hit.
The aluminum case would help dissipate heat, actually. The plastic holds it in, whereas the aluminum spreads it more evenly throughout the case and can be more easily cooled by the outside air.
2 solutions then:
1) make the power supply external
2) Apple announces it's latest innovation - wireless power!

I am still amazed by all the people that think the iMac should be called a Mac just because it somehow fits in better with the whole new Apple branding scheme. I think it is dumb to drop a popular brand that people know and try to replace it with a new brand. Besides just Mac for an actual model is not a good idea. What kind of computer do you have...a mac...what kind of mac do you have...its an apple mac...what apple mac do you have...a mac...
I still think that iMac fits very logically into their branding especially with an iPod and an iPhone.

Mac (new tower - "the kid-brother" of Mac Pro - looks like a small Pro and not nearly as advanced)
About every other year, momentum starts building on this site for Apple to sell a headless Mac. Folks want the cube to come back. Others talk about the mid-tower.
You never know with Apple, but I just don't think there is much of a market for this type of product. I've owned an iMac for a while now, and the only thing you can't change is the graphics card. I've upgraded my hard drive, upgraded my optical drive, and increased the memory. Some may argue that I can't get Bluetooth 2.0 or better wifi, but that's what USB is for.
At the end of the day, if SJ gave us the ability to upgrade our graphics card through a single PCI type slot, does it help sell more Macs? I bet Apple's marketing department knows the answer.
I thought the problem was the opposite with the Books; the MacBook was fairly low-temp 'cuz it's plastic but the MBP had temp issues due to the metal case. But you might be right...
