If they made this then I would buy it. I can see two 2.5" HDDs fitting inside this:

They better change the name to iGriddle; the current one's got some temperature issues and I can't *wait* to see what they're like in a metal chassis.

Very nice but a glass/perspex base would be more fitting. Alloy flipper looks out of place.

But on the whole brushed Aluminium definately get's my vote.

That said, my current ultra-sexy 20" acrylic white imac gets my vote. It's already intrinsically gorgeous and something more or equivelantly gorgeous will not dramatically alter that.

Unless they do something stupid in cheap nasty dell type plastics I don't see any design coming from Apple being a problem.

The aluminum case would help dissipate heat, actually. The plastic holds it in, whereas the aluminum spreads it more evenly throughout the case and can be more easily cooled by the outside air.

QFT...absolutely right.
Apple selling a midrange tower at this price would kill.
Even around $999...it would still sell well.

I like the iMac but they're completely forgetting about people (in that price range) who want more expandability, don't need a monitor, or both. Mac Pro is a great machine that is too far out of the budget reach of most potential buyers.

If they announce a midtower under $1000 at WWDC, I'm all over it and will buy one as soon as we get the money. If not - I'll stick with my plans on building a Q6600 midtower after the July price drop and deal with Windows for awhile longer.

Yea I am a fence sitter and if steve jobs announced that he would be pushing me off the fence :D

My thoughts were this for a mid tower:
1 Desktop core 2 duo or xeon processor

1-2 pcix slots (at least 1 double wide) (and possible cards being 8x00 series and 2900 series with maybe some past gen like the 19xx and 79xx

4 ram slots (one of their boards or two half size boads from the mac pro)

2-4 hdd slots (tool less like mac pro) (depends on space)

1-2 disc drives

Bluetooth and wireless

Get it out the door for around 1000 base

Going with their current name scheme they would have to name it the MacGriddle, and in order to avoid trademark infringement all theyd have to do is not stuff it with sausage and maple syrup.

I can guarantee that you will NEVER see slots for expansion cards in the Mac mini.

You can add as many hard drives as you want now, externally of course and that isn't going to change.

RAM? At best you can hope for what the iMac has. You will never get more than that. Steve Jobs sees it as a lower end Mac and if anything will see less RAM capability in the iMac.

If you are waiting for the above, you will wait for ever and never see it.

what you're describing sounds almost like a MacPro to me...

New Imac Design...

Given the price point of the 24" Imac consumers deserve better materials than the white plastic we've gotten. Though I adore my 24" Imac,..my G5 case and 23" cinema was certainly a nicer looking set-up. I dont miss all of the unsightly cables associated with my former set-up. I just miss silver ano! I will fall short of calling the 24" Imac elegant...because plastic just ain't all that sexy. I've polished my Imac with oz.'s of IClear only to find that my Imac looks slicker and even more "plasticky" than before. Therefore, I eagerly await a new designed Imac which incorporates some of the innovated transparent techniques that Apple has perfected and hopefully some annodized aluminum with a few chrome accents. There is plenty room to make dramatic stylistic changes to this model to make it the most beautiful Mac ever....and computer ever. I personally believe it will take on certain characteristics of the Iphone. Turn the Iphone side ways and put a mini annodized stand on it...and it has the profile of an Imac. This is my prediction that the IPhone and new Imac will be introduced as a beautiful stunning set in future advertising.Simular in appearance and dynamic duo.Wow,...isnt that a great slogan! The Dynamic Duo....(good slogan huh??)
For 2000.00 Apple can give consumers an elegant product that pc users will truly drool all over....I hope I am right....If I am,...that gives me just a few weeks to sell my Imac. "Say goodbye to my little friend!"

The new Apple-line

I've now read nearly 600 replies on this topic (this and other sites) and am now ready to throw in my own thoughts:

The new line:

MacBook
MacBook Pro

iMac (17" and 20"; same formfactor as today - minor hardware upgrade but (alot) cheaper)
iMac Pro (24" and 30" - major hardware upgrade, aluminium case, new design - same or slightly higher price)

Mac (new tower - "the kid-brother" of Mac Pro - looks like a small Pro and not nearly as advanced)
Mac Pro

The Mac mini will disappear - the entry model will be the iMac 17"...

This is what I believe, anyway...

I tend to agree. The Mac Mini goes and the 17" imac with intergrated graphics becomes the new low end. A Pro Imac is a maybe, but lower prices on the existing iMacs makes sense. Maybe we will see a silent price drop on Monday.

Simply call it.... "Mac" MacMini, Mac, MacPro, MacBook Mini, MacBook, MacBook Pro.

It will be a hit.

I am still amazed by all the people that think the iMac should be called a Mac just because it somehow fits in better with the whole new Apple branding scheme. I think it is dumb to drop a popular brand that people know and try to replace it with a new brand. Besides just Mac for an actual model is not a good idea. What kind of computer do you have...a mac...what kind of mac do you have...its an apple mac...what apple mac do you have...a mac...

I still think that iMac fits very logically into their branding especially with an iPod and an iPhone.

I thought the problem was the opposite with the Books; the MacBook was fairly low-temp 'cuz it's plastic but the MBP had temp issues due to the metal case. But you might be right...

I completely agree. If Apple changed it to just "Mac" it would create a LOT of confusion as an earlier post showed.

More Headless Mac discussions...

Mac (new tower - "the kid-brother" of Mac Pro - looks like a small Pro and not nearly as advanced)

About every other year, momentum starts building on this site for Apple to sell a headless Mac. Folks want the cube to come back. Others talk about the mid-tower.

You never know with Apple, but I just don't think there is much of a market for this type of product. I've owned an iMac for a while now, and the only thing you can't change is the graphics card. I've upgraded my hard drive, upgraded my optical drive, and increased the memory. Some may argue that I can't get Bluetooth 2.0 or better wifi, but that's what USB is for.

At the end of the day, if SJ gave us the ability to upgrade our graphics card through a single PCI type slot, does it help sell more Macs? I bet Apple's marketing department knows the answer.

God... with these horrible renderings, this thread has taken an ugly turn towards extreme-fanboy-ism.

I can't hit UNSUBSCRIBE fast enough.

See you guys tomorrow when reality hits.

You are not supposed to.

You have just voided your warranty.

A metal case will disapate heat to the environment while a plastic case will hold the heat inside the machine. For a laptop, a metal case can cause problems of overheating your lap.
