Last time I checked, SDK stood for Software Development Kit, not for Dozen Killer Apps. Are all of you people venting your frustration about the delay in the release date of the SDK actually developers, hoping to make some money off the iPhone? I didn't think so. Most of you have MR accounts less than 1 year old. Hm, would it be that you joined after you bought your iPhones

For almost two months I have been planning to get an iPod Touch to be used as a PDA. Among the main reasons is the interface (way better than anything else) and the active developer community :D . These news are a major bump as the SDK would make crystal clear how Apple want to deal with developers.

Oh, life...my Moleskine will not be retired so soon...

Been using my i-Touch as a PDA since Christmas, Love it!

Apple has 10 billion in the bank. Hire a couple more programmers darn it!

This is pretty pathetic from Apple. BTW, I think Leopard is one of Apple's worst OS offerings ever. It's bloated, slow and buggy. I'm still dropping my Wireless connection and I use only Apple wireless equipment. Running 10.5.2.

This reminds me of the kind of crap that Microsoft pulls.

Get with it Apple! You're really starting to piss people off!

I feel your frustrations but...

I do believe Apple's R&D has gone through the roof in the last year - literally to about 27% of Turnover or something equally ludicrous.

I think that means whatever Apple was or has been in the last 7 years is about to be redefined on a level we can only dream about...

And if not, well then I guess we'll all be just a little disappointed.

Apple 2009 could literarily blow away our expectations. I'm sure Apple and Steve Jobs are smart enough to realise they have raised the bar on people's expectations to such an extent that they expect incredible excellence.

And, to echo your comments - heck, they have the money, the talent and the mindshare to do any-damn-thing they like - so please just do it!!

At the very least - the 'touch platform' heralds itself to be bigger than the mac - so it's going to need a stable SDK platform - if that takes a few weeks to ensure the next few years of growth then 'so be it'...

I wonder if Apple might not delay the SDK until Apple finishes some of their own apps. For example, there is no iChat client on the iPhone. If Apple doesn't make an AIM client, someone will quickly once the SDK is released. Apple probably doesn't want that competitor to become the entrenched defacto IM program. So Apple might feel pressured to come out with apps to cover all its bases before a third party with an SDK is able to.

if this ends up being true, I can see a huge uproar happening... If you thought the price break caused comotion, just wait.

geeks care about sdks. The general population cares about $200. There's a lot more of the latter.

Correct.

Again, I don't see the delay as a big deal. The SDK is for developers and not end users. Developers will take time to create their applications. This 1-3 week delay is nothing in the big picture.

They must be trying to make sure the SDK has no bugs. If thats the case then they can take their time. 10.5.2 and Apple TV Take 2 saw delays but once they came out there were very few (small) bugs. But I guess until it comes out I will just continue to develop .Net apps for Mobile 6.

There has never been any software without bugs. Well, except Duke Nukem Forever. That doesn't have any bugs.

Sheesh. If things are on time, people complain that they should have spent more time perfecting it. If things are late people also complain...

It's too hard pleasing some people :p

If this is true I'm seriously wondering why Apple can't seem to get anything out on time anymore (Leopard, Apple TV Update, SDK, more to come!).

Good software can't be written to fit in a deadline. Engineers can't work 16 hours straight and be expected to have a wonderful, intuitive, perfectly bug-free product.

An iPhone SDK? Who cares about that anyway, its not like it will benefit anyone on here.

Think again ;)

Exactly. If you think the SDK is insignificant, think again. The SDK is huge and will be creating massive new markets. It's on the same scale as Palm and Pocket PC apps. New businesses will be formed around this, so Apple does need to get it right, even though I'd rather have it now, I'll take the delay for a better product.

I'll take this a step further......

iPhone apps. will probably be like Konfabulator (I refuse to call it Yahoo) widgets. You know; the first week your desktop was *littered* with 'em. Now, you don't even have it in your startup folder.

Capesh?

Short of MMS, there's not a whole lot my iPhone doesn't do that I wish it did.

Rumors..Rumors..Rumers..

You Guys Have Gone Bananas...

Apple Never Said That They Are Releasing Anything In February.......except Sdk....

You Guys Have Built Up Your Emotions On Hear Says... Innuendos...and Your Own Imaginations.

Dont Blame Apple For Every Of Your Faults, Except If They Dont Release Sdk By Feb 29

Goodluck...

I hope they take 1-3 weeks to beat Steve senseless for not putting in edge support for iChat.
I want support and synchronization for Notes and ToDo! It's almost unforgivable.

I have hopes that with the SDK, there will be a very significant update to the system, maybe 1.2, and perhaps a new bundled native app or two. I do expect there will be several optional apps available for downloading from iTunes on day one. May I suggest: SHOPPING LIST!

I'm not entirely sure what people think is gonna happen when the SDK arrives. Do you really think that they need some wild press event to let people know that maybe software is being made by companies?

Has anyone considered the possibility that the SDK is actually with developers right now who are under non-disclosure agreement?

hey i got a question is is possible that since some companies already have the sdk and were able to make apps that they can release them next week, but the software developer kit isnt realeased until later. I am going to make apps unless it easier to use than iweb which i doubt it is. So is it possible that apple can appease us with those apps that were being developed by the other companies and then release the sdk later? so we have something to play with until then.

yeah but apple has had at least year to implement the sdk, and it shouldn't be much more than stripped down osx sdk + some mobile api:s.

Yes, there are already companies that have the SDK. Trust me ;)

Providing an SDK for developers is not a walk in the park. They have to document every single function that developers can use, not to mention keep things consistent and make sure everything works. It's a lot more work than you'd expect, especially if you aren't a software developer.

What people like you can't seem to grasp is that yes, we are not developers, but we want the apps on our phone that the developers will write with the SDK. And yes, I know I can jailbreak. But honestly, none of the hackapps are very good. *puts on flame suit*

Nothing wrong with a little texas hold em , is there? And games and cell phones go hand and hand, we remember how much fun "snake" was on our Nokia phones.

Relax

Getting the SDK out in the next week isn't critical - delivering the SDK in good condition is.

First, the SDk is for developers who understand that deadlines are not always met. I doubt that there is a developer out there who has had every major project they have worked on delivered early or on time. They will understand and that is what counts.

Second, there are probably some selected developers who have been working with the SDK and passing comments to Apple re bugs or missing parts. Everyone gains if Apple has listened.

Considering the huge potential that the SDK has in terms of expanding the iPhone/touch platforms I'm in the group that will sit back and wait for Apple to deliver. I seriously doubt that it will be like the long wait I had for my G5 iMac to be announced. :)
