They should make the iLife 09 update free retroactive back 30 days rather than charge a "nominal" fee.

It's the principal that you are being taken care of and not being nickel and dimed.

The update is a download and is not a mailing.

As a potential customer, I am not impressed.

1) Media, packaging, and postage cost $. Apple is giving recent buyers the iLife content for free. Why should Apple also bear the cost of shipping and handling? Honestly, they don't have to even offer a program like this. Can the entitled attitude.

2) It was no secret iLife 09 was going to be announced a MW. If it was that huge of a deal breaker for one to save $10 he/she should have waited a month.

3) Apple has offered this same program since iLife 2.0 so the "fee" should come as a shocker to no one... except maybe a nube.

4) iLife '09 is too large to put on line. It's a few GBs! That would cost Apple a bundle in bandwidth and server costs.

5) And this is the most important thing so pay attention: if $10 is the stated barrier to anyone not buying an Mac I'm guessing they have no real plans to buy one anyway. I've been plenty annoyed at some of Apple's true nickle and diming schemes in the past but in the end it hasn't caused me to hold back on a purchase or go to the dark side.

Thank god finally some reasoning. It's sad that everyone expects everything for free.

I have no problem paying $10, even $20, heck I was planning on dishing out the $80 when it started shipping. Supporting the development efforts of software only makes them better. I'm just thankful that Apple even considered offering the $10 'up-to-date' charge, they didn't have to.

And anyone who didn't wait until the keynote to make your order (unless you had an exceptional reason) should have just showed a little more restraint.

I honestly haven't found ilife or iwork useful at all. I've only used idvd, but have had issues with it, the audio and video are never in sync, and i find that out after its on the dvd =/ i tried a few times, doesn't work for me I guess..

I qualified my macbook pro last night for the £7.95.

Expected delivery is 4th Feb

Cant complain really, I bought my macbook pro 4 days ago

:D

Thank you! I could not agree more. I bought my MacBook on Sunday from Best Buy - no one there knew anything about the update (not surprised) so I did not bother to hassle them for a free copy when it comes in or a $10 off coupon of some sort for my MacBook.

I ordered my copy last night - it's shipping on February 5th for $9.95 + tax (no shipping), but as mentioned, the $9.95 covers shipping and handling. I'd rather have a DVD of the software than to download it anyways.

Bundle

I know this is a little different topic but apple currently offers leopard, iLife 09 and iWork bundled with a $40 discount. Will this most likely continue when snow leopard is released? Or should I just buy them now (pre-order) since I have Leopard already and they won't have the bundle later?

That's not entirely true. Once they've announced the program will be released on a certain date, they are in a difficult position to sell computers with the old software. Sure, buyers may not really know, but basically they're selling computers with the older iLife version on it, and that's going to deter people from buying. Could they get away with it? Sure, but it's only going to antagonize customers. It's precisely the reason they don't announce new products in advance of availability.

Hi Chupa Chupa et al,

OK - my confusion actually came from the 1-800-MY-APPLE hotline. I've called there 3 times and each time I get a different answer. I was told that the Up To Date program is just a download and not a mailing from my the first rep I spoke too. So, from that perspective I felt the download should be free.

And, from that perspective, my experience when dealing with Microsoft was that when they released a new product usually they make the software free retroactive 30 to 60 days and since I was under the impression it was a download as Apple indicated I though it should be the same.

Since I am a "newbie", I expressed my frustrations with the Apple Hotline in that I have received many different answers about this program and what products actually qualified for the update since I bought a refurbished Mac Pro which I subsequently returned only because I was told that if I bought the unit a couple of days later I would get the free update.

I value my dollars and the principal.

As such, Apple understood my point and will give me the free update once I buy the refurbished Mac Pro this week so I am happy about the resolution to this customer service issue.

I bought on the 5th.

Now that's feeling a bit ripped off... You're only valid from the 6th onwards.

TBH, that's your own damn fault. Macworld was the very next day and if you decided to buy a whole new Macintosh the day before Apple's big show where they announce new products then that's the risk you took, sorry, no sympathy here.

sorry folks, nothing is free. If you like the software, buy it. If you don't - do something else with your cash, but don't whine that it should be free. Life ain't like that.

I just typed in my MacBooks serial number and put that I purchased it on the 7th (I actually purchased it 1'st December'ish) and location of purchase and it's added the upgrade to my cart... am I ok to just go ahead and order it? Don't wanna get busted or nothing :D I'm 15 btw.

I want to do the same thing but I have an AppleCare agreement registered to the serial number of my Macbook which would show purchased on December 20th 2008...

Do you have the Applecare? What's the worst that can happen? I don't wanna get busted for fraud... lol

EDIT: Do you think waiting till after Feb 2 shipping date might be smart? Or just try to order now and hope for the best?

Just order it now.

Done... ordered.... The serial number doesn't seem to do much, just enter it and it lets you add iLife 09 upgrade to the cart.

My guess it checks if your Macbook is a unibody model, and if it is, no questions asked...

...just dont let apple read this thread.

Makes me wonder if I could have got a few months extra on my Applecare if I hadn't registered it the day I bought my Macbook....

EDIT: FYI Apple charged me $13.00 + tax in Canada... I guess its about right given the current exchange rates, but why advertize 9.95 USD on the Canadian website?

Also, it shows me Ships: 30 Jan Delivers: 6 Feb

No, you have 1 year through apple apple care is 2 more years so three total.
I know but when I registered AppleCare it asked for the date of purchase, I activated it the same day I bought the Macbook. if I waited till today, maybe I could have got three years from today's date...

Anyhow, I'm not out to scam Apple, but I still feel they should give you the upgrade price if you bought it before the 6th.

And for those that say if you make the date December 14th, those who bought it the 13th will complain, how about something like:

Bought 08 in December: 9.95
November: 14.95
October: 19.95
September: 24.95
All the way up to the retail price. Fair no?

Well, I disagree so if I were you Kardashian I would not listen to this defeatist advice.

My advice to you is to call the 1-800-MY-APPLE hotline and ask to speak to a Supervisor and ask for some relief.

Like I said, Microsoft usually offers at least 30 days retroactive free upgrades for Office and Windows and tell them as a customer you expect the same.

You bought your computer thinking that Apple would have good customer service for the extra price you pay for your equipment just like any other business that charges higher prices.

Your dollars are hard earned and even though the typical Mac customer is not price sensitive, as Apple gains more market share then more customers will be in the price sensitive camp and will ask for leniency of attitude.

Actually, it's not a $40 discount, it's a whopping 40% discount. And this is a really good deal. (Making it $118 off for regular, and $168 off for Family Pack.)

For either the regular or family pack (5 license) version, you can think of this as buying Leopard at list and getting iLife and iWork '09 for $15/ea. Or, alternatively, you can think of it as buying iLife and iWork '09 at list price and getting an extra Leopard license for $10. :)

Either way, it's a heckuva deal.

It's unknown whether this bundle will continue when Snow Leopard comes out.

I could understand for people who bought a new Mac before the annoucement, but I think it should be a free upgrade for anybody who is buying between MacWorld & when iLife 09 ships. Just my two cents.

Yeah, I bought my macbook pro the day after macworld just because I wasn't sure if they'd do anything to them. I'd rather spend $10 then $80 though.. so it's alright with me, even though a free update would be the best.

I still have to wait till February 2nd for it to ship though :(

And my goodluck continues.

first apple replaced my early 08 MBP with a unibody, the 2.5 ghz, 4 gig version instead of the base model i had.

I just ordered this and it came out to be 14.56 CAD.

Thanks

Wow! What was wrong with your first Macbook that made them switch it?

I had banding on the lcd screen. I took it in and they could not fix the problem, even after replacing the screen and the logic board.
