I wonder how long Apple will continue to treat the Mac Mini as the proverbial turd in the punch bowl? Its time to show the mini some love Apple!

why nvidia GPU?

Why not use ATI 4850's for GPU in new Mac Pro? They are a great performance/price mix. we need to keep nvidia competition alive.

Uni-processor Mac Pro (X58 chipset, Core i7 cpus):
$1299 quad 2.66GHz, 3GB RAM, 320GB HDD, Superdrive, nvidia GPU
$1599 quad 2.93GHz, 3GB RAM, 320GB HDD, Superdrive, nvidia GPU
$1999 quad 3.20GHz, 3GB RAM, 320GB HDD, Superdrive, nvidia GPU

Wishful thinking, Apple would probably sell those for $1599/1999/2499 (if not higher), still I'd buy one or two of them...

Dual-processor Mac Pro (Tylersburg-EP chipset, nehalem Xeon cpus):
$2999 dual-quad 2.66GHz, 3GB RAM, 320GB HDD, Superdrive, nvidia GPU (the cpus X5560 will cost $958 each)
$3999 dual-quad 2.93GHz, 3GB RAM, 320GB HDD, Superdrive, nvidia GPU (the cpus X5570 will cost $1,386 each)
$4599 dual-quad 3.20GHz, 3GB RAM, 320GB HDD, Superdrive, nvidia GPU (the cpus W5580 will cost $1,600 each)

Nvidia do not have a license for QPI (quick path interconnect) so cannot make boards for Core i7 processors. They wouldn't have been making them for the Mac Pro anyway as they have never (to my knowledge) produced Intel dual socket boards.

Apple is moving to Nvidia boards into all their systems.

Or at least it looks that way. Maybe an AMD Chip/Nvidia board or Intel/Intel.

Of course, we could get Intel/Nvidia if it is worked out.

Psystar has traction because Apple is choosing to ignore a key demographic desiring a mid-range, or half-height Mac Pro. I am hoping that Apple has something up their sleeves seeing they have given Psystar a pass--legally. This bodes for a new tact by Apple. If they do not do something to compete with the Hacintoshes waiting in the wings, they will see a decline in sales and a red line of models they COULD have sold!

Apple is really tripping up.
Hope they get out something decent in January in terms of computers. The iPhone is nice, but they cant avoid their computer market for too long.

You're probably right on all counts, the server/workstation cpus will be more expensive than current ones (at similar clocks) and the dual-quad 2.66GHz nehalem Mac Pro will probably cost $2999. But it doesn't negate the fact that this Mac will probably be faster than the current dual-quad 3.0 that ships for $3599.

It should be faster than the 3.2GHz! Sadly (though maybe justly) a lot of people will still complain about the price because they aren't just buying for the processor power.

The other thing is that it makes no sense what so ever to ship a single cpu model on a dual-cpu motherboard with the changes in the architecture. So, will Apple release two versions of the Mac Pro? Single cpu (X58 chipset and Core i7 cpu) and dual cpu (Tylersburg-EP and two xeon nehalems)...

Given the low price of the high-end desktop cpus (Core i7 965/940/920), Apple COULD release a single cpu Mac Pro for about $1299 (the quad 2.66GHz core i7 920 will cost about $284, the 2.93GHz $562, and the 3.20GHz $999).

It doesn't make sense from a consumer point of view, but I doubt Apple want the marketing issues of 4 faster cheaper cores vs 8 slower / more expensive ones. It will be cheaper for Apple to just buy Xeons rather than a mix, same with systemboards. If they are expensive to keep the Mac Pro somewhat competitive then all the reviews will focus on the price which will not do Apple any favours on a new range. Maybe Apple will surpise us, but I wouldn't count on it. Remember Apple aren't about choice.

Power requierements: a single Core i7 has a TDP of 130W, dual xeon nehalems cpus have a combined TDP of 190W or 260W for the dual 3.20GHz cpus. With each revisions of the Mac Pro the TDP increases. Maybe it's time to cool down a little.

The current 3.2GHz processors have a combined TDP of 300W so it should be alright.

ATI will probably offer 3rd party 4800 series cards if Apple aren't offering them directly.

I think it is more a case of it made sense this time with notebooks. The Mac Pro will surely be an Intel board with Intel processors.

Fully agreed. Apple is somewhere goinfg this way... iPhone is the future of personal computing?

please put your head directly over the toilet bowl before spewing such crap.

I was joking, or at least partly. It just seems like ever since Apple 1st announced the iPhone, that was their main focus & put everything else on the back burner. I'm glad to see the new MacBooks, but I'm still not 100% convinced Apple's giving its computer division enough attention.

April 09, NAB if anything.

Macworld looks like the announcement of 17 inch MacBook Pro, I can't think of much else. Of course expect some iPhone talk, maybe too much iPhone talk.

They didn't even go to NAB last year, did they? I agree that it'll probably be a consumer product focused event. Last year, they announced the new MacPros seperately just before MWSF and then had the Keynote and show focus on the MBA. Which is not to say that they couldn't have some big software updates and announcements planned for this year. I agree about the timing for updating the iLife suite, and am hoping for some new pro level stuff as well. :D

Are there any real competitors to the Mini? Roughly the same size, but the same or better performance ( Mainly graphics - I don't care much about the optical drive )? I'd like to pick up a Mac Mini, but more for Christmas time frame and I'd like to get a refreshed Mini, but it looks like that won't happen.

Apple abondoning the "Pros"?

It seems to me Apple is slowly abandoning the pro and creative market. Here's why:

Firewire 400 (standard in pro audio): gone
DVI: soon to be gone
matte displays in laptops (preferable for photo and video): gone
Logic 8: dumbed down to be more like garageband and terribly buggy, totally unreliable. Go back to Logic 7 if you need a pro app
Charge indicator on laptop batteries: gone (it's quite useful, when you need to manage multiple batteries)

I for one am slowly migrating my pro stuff to Windows XP, keeping Mac for rudimentary stuff I guess.

PS: Apple, please fix ATSServer. Having to Force-Power-Off my Macbook 4 times a day is lame...

So a pro audio user can afford the $5k in audio hardware but not the additional $700 to get firewire let alone the $20 to get a display port adapter?

Those two goals are contradictory; systems get that cheap by stripping out all the expansion slots and putting everything on the motherboard.

Systems that do that come in at the sub-$400 range. An $800 PC still has expansion slots and non-integrated (though budget-class) graphics.

The Mac Pro should include USB 3.0 and eSATA and drop the old FW400 port. FW800 and beyond support should of course stay around. I hope it has some killer graphics card for consumers and the memory is DDR3 and maybe a new look.

Can’t FW400 devices be used with FW800 ports by buying simple adapters or new cables? Won’t FW800 become the new pro standard? Once you connect one FW400 device, couldn’t you daisy chain it to use old FW400 cables (assuming it has two ports)? Can’t you buy cheap FW400 PCI cards?

I don’t see how dumping the FW400 port can be seen as a sign of abandoning the pro market.

My guess would be that they will make a somewhat unibody for all the computers.. Would be nice to see the Mac Pro refreshed and maybe a tad smaller..

Imo

i think that -

iPhone - 1/2

OS X 10.6 - 1/4

Macs (17" MBP, Mini speed bump) - 2 mins MAX

Software (Pro Apps) - 1/4

Just a Guess

It's not abandonment, it's called changing with the times.

FW800 is backwards compatible with FW400. I simple adapter is all that's needed to plug in FW400 devices. Soon, FW800 will probably be left for FW3200 or even eSata.

DVI is dying, to be replaced most likely by DisplayPort or HDMI which can carry both audio/video and has two-way communication (think touch screens).

The majority of Apple customers probably don't carry multiple batteries around. Yes, it's handy to use the indicators of the batteries themselves, but I think the benefit of having it on the side of the system, is better. Plus they built in expanded error checking into the error lights.

The more I read, the more I hear with the LED backlights, *most* people are ok with the glossy displays. No, it's not perfect, but it's workable.

I don't use Logic so I can't comment on that.

As for you ATSServer server issue, sounds like maybe a reinstall is in order.

DVI has two communication.

HDMI is just DVI + SOUND also not all LCD displays have build in sound and they don't have digital audio out.

Very few video cards have sound out that some times is just a S/PDIF plug on the card hooked to the sound chips on the MB or a add in card.

Mac Pro

I am considering a new Mac Pro since Apple no longer seems to like the Power PC's. I am a java developer and more projects now need Java 6. This means I have to use my MacBook Pro rather than my Desktop. This is a pain as my Desktop has dual monitors and therefore easier to work with. Also doing a lot more Virtualization these days (VMWare running CentOs, and Parallels running Fedora/Oracle) to allow me to replicate production so an Intel based Desktop would be cool.

If they bring out a new model I will probably get one of the old clearance models to keep the cost down and still get an impressive machine.

Would not upgrade my MacMini unless it supported Blu-Ray and had a HDMI port. Otherise it is a perfect media machine.

If this happens... It will be a "By the way, we've finally started shipping the new unibody 17" Macbook Pro." -- and that's probably it. No way is Apple spending another chunk of time at a media event to discuss notebooks.

unless they introduce matte and firewire back to keep those witho are cring about
