DVI has two communication.

HDMI is just DVI + SOUND also not all LCD displays have build in sound and they don't have digital audio out.

Very few video cards have sound out that some times is just a S/PDIF plug on the card hooked to the sound chips on the MB or a add in card.

Just saying that Displayport has advantages on DVI or HDMI. It's suppose to be the future I guess

I was joking, or at least partly. It just seems like ever since Apple 1st announced the iPhone, that was their main focus & put everything else on the back burner. I'm glad to see the new MacBooks, but I'm still not 100% convinced Apple's giving its computer division enough attention.

every one goes crazy but when apple has another child they focus on it for a while. they will shift their focus from the iphone to something different soon whether that be a new product or refocus on a current one.

for instance the ipod is now only accounting for about 10 - 15% of their profit think that was on appleinsider

I feel the same way. Apple has neglected the Mac far too often.

The mini is very embarrassing for Apple at this point. This wouldn't have even washed that well in 2006 with everyone. Combo drive? Common. As of now, I don't know any other "desktop" for sale today with no DVD burner.

This is what I would like to see. A fully portable MacMini with a keyboard and CD/DVD that u can take anywhere where there is an HDTV...
80's computing should be back forever, now in HD! :D
:apple:

I don't think this is practical today.
80s computers (like C64 etc) were designed to be used with a TV, they used very large fonts to be readable from a distance, like you see on an Apple TV or a game console these days.
Today TVs are often 40 inches or larger, if you sit in front of them they are too big to give you an overview. Most people will not have a table in a distance to the TV suitable for computer use. The typical position of the seat you sit on when you are watching TV on a large screen is too far away to read the text if the software is not designed for this scenario and you would need very long cables.

There are still many bad HDTVs out there that are not capable of giving you a pixel exact display of a computer image. A lot of them have an overscan that cannot be switched of, so the image will be blury even if the computer supplies the exact resolution of the display. This may be acceptable if you only want to consume media or play games, but such a display is not suitable for any more serious computer use.

DVI is dying, to be replaced most likely by DisplayPort or HDMI which can carry both audio/video and has two-way communication (think touch screens).

For Apple the winner is DisplayPort. HDMI does not support resolutions over 1920x1200. So yes, you need adapters to hook up your TV (via HDMI) or a Monitor with DVI or VGA, but this way even the MacBook Air is able to drive a 30'' Cinema Display at full resolution - while a lot of other Notebooks still only have the outdated analog VGA...

[Apple] will never offer a "mainstream" computer. the main stream is very price competitive and Apple simply choose to not serve that customer.

Hence, folks like Psystar will continue to make pop-up, continue to make news (ie free global ads), continue to have extremely busy Web sites, and will elude any Apple lawyers. This may be a move by Apple, but I doubt it will be the best one. Remember, they got their clocks cleaned in the 80s with just sort of an attitude.

They've done no such thing; they're still pursuing their legal case against Psystar.

I misread an article. So I will change my point to "I hope Apple uses this Psystar phenomena to wake up to the reality of what gap Psystar seems to be filling. If Apple were covering their bases properly (hardware-wise) then Psystar would not be a threat.

The next major event for such a high profile release is Macworld San Francisco in January 2009. With recent updates to the rest of their product line, it seems there will be little else to talk about at Macworld except the Mac Pro. Unless, of course, Apple decides to introduce a new product or discuss the upcoming Mac OS X Snow Leopard at the event.
I'd say we'll see new product(s) at MWSF. Tablet, mini-tablet, Snow Leopard preview (with a few visual features), and iLife '09 and iWork '09.

Oh yeah, and the iPhone.

I think the October and November updates are for Apple to update their existing products before MWSF and release new ones at MWSF. And I'm not sure if the 17" MacBook Pro is significant enough for a MWSF release, maybe end of January/February?

And wasn't there a report that Gainestown would be delayed to Q1 2009? If so, then I don't think a WWDC 2009 Mac Pro (or a few months earlier) major update is out of the question. Apple might also do a small interim update with the new 3.4 GHz Harpertown. From what I've seen with Gainestown prices, they're more expensive per GHz than Harpertown (unlike Bloomfield and Yorkfield). So Nehalem's speed improvements may not be as big as what we've heard after price is factored in.

It doesn't make sense from a consumer point of view, but I doubt Apple want the marketing issues of 4 faster cheaper cores vs 8 slower / more expensive ones. It will be cheaper for Apple to just buy Xeons rather than a mix, same with systemboards. If they are expensive to keep the Mac Pro somewhat competitive then all the reviews will focus on the price which will not do Apple any favours on a new range. Maybe Apple will surpise us, but I wouldn't count on it. Remember Apple aren't about choice.
1 cpu system boards cost a lot less then 2 cpu ones about $200 - $300 less. Add higher cost ram ECC ram costs more then non ECC ram. 4gb of good ddr2 ram kits 2x2gb is under $100.

2+ link and higher cpus cost more then 1 link cpus also.

apple can cut about $200 - $300 for the board + $100 - $150 in a smaller case + $80 - $50 for a psu with less power + $50 - $100 in ram per gb.

I sure hope they don't update the macbook pro line especially since I just picked up a pro. . .I would already hate to have mine replaced by something else in just a couple of months.

Apple can start the Nehalem's system at $2500 for 2 cpus and drop the older mac pro down to $1200 - $2200. To days mac pro at $1200 with a video card bump will fill the gap and put a dent in Psystar.

My old G4 Mac mini really needs to be replaced.

If Apple doesn't move soon, I'll probably just end up building myself a SFF PC with OS X compatible hardware.

That is what I was thinking as well. I might wait to see if Snow Leopard will be doable, seeing that I am still seeing interface bugs in Leopard's OS. I will wait as long a January, then make a move.

Apple, do you want me to buy YOUR hardware or not?

You're probably right on all counts, the server/workstation cpus will be more expensive than current ones (at similar clocks) and the dual-quad 2.66GHz nehalem Mac Pro will probably cost $2999. But it doesn't negate the fact that this Mac will probably be faster than the current dual-quad 3.0 that ships for $3599.

The other thing is that it makes no sense what so ever to ship a single cpu model on a dual-cpu motherboard with the changes in the architecture. So, will Apple release two versions of the Mac Pro? Single cpu (X58 chipset and Core i7 cpu) and dual cpu (Tylersburg-EP and two xeon nehalems)...

Given the low price of the high-end desktop cpus (Core i7 965/940/920), Apple COULD release a single cpu Mac Pro for about $1299 (the quad 2.66GHz core i7 920 will cost about $284, the 2.93GHz $562, and the 3.20GHz $999).

Power requierements: a single Core i7 has a TDP of 130W, dual xeon nehalems cpus have a combined TDP of 190W or 260W for the dual 3.20GHz cpus. With each revisions of the Mac Pro the TDP increases. Maybe it's time to cool down a little.

So, here are my wishes (or better, the possibilities) for two lines of Mac Pro:

Uni-processor Mac Pro (X58 chipset, Core i7 cpus):
$1299 quad 2.66GHz, 3GB RAM, 320GB HDD, Superdrive, nvidia GPU
$1599 quad 2.93GHz, 3GB RAM, 320GB HDD, Superdrive, nvidia GPU
$1999 quad 3.20GHz, 3GB RAM, 320GB HDD, Superdrive, nvidia GPU

Wishful thinking, Apple would probably sell those for $1599/1999/2499 (if not higher), still I'd buy one or two of them...

Dual-processor Mac Pro (Tylersburg-EP chipset, nehalem Xeon cpus):
$2999 dual-quad 2.66GHz, 3GB RAM, 320GB HDD, Superdrive, nvidia GPU (the cpus X5560 will cost $958 each)
$3999 dual-quad 2.93GHz, 3GB RAM, 320GB HDD, Superdrive, nvidia GPU (the cpus X5570 will cost $1,386 each)
$4599 dual-quad 3.20GHz, 3GB RAM, 320GB HDD, Superdrive, nvidia GPU (the cpus W5580 will cost $1,600 each)
Bump the last 3 to 6gb as they will have 3 ram channels per cpu but also come with ECC ram so maybe 6x512mb?

2gb will not do at $3000+

But it does at $2800? Apple have always shipped the minimum amount, they don't need to offer more than the minimum because no one is going to not buy an Apple workstation over how much memory it comes with. Taking the Macbook Pro having 4GB in to consideration they may offer 2x2GB, but I would expect 2GB and be pleased if you get more.

Are there any real competitors to the Mini? Roughly the same size, but the same or better performance ( Mainly graphics - I don't care much about the optical drive )? I'd like to pick up a Mac Mini, but more for Christmas time frame and I'd like to get a refreshed Mini, but it looks like that won't happen.
If you can do without the optical drive completely, a nettop is about the same size as the Mac mini, but the graphics suck. Otherwise, I can think only of Dell's Studio Hybrid.

Mac World 2009 Seeing is Believing - It's all about the Display

Well there's a few inconsistencies that Apple obviously will address in the coming months.

1. The Macbook Pro line still has a 17 inch model in the old design, this will be updated soon, maybe they were waiting for a faster processor from Intel, or they had a lot of old stock that they wanted to shift?

2. Strange that they only released 1 new cinema display compatible with the new MacBook and MacBook Pro. I expect that whole line of cinema displays will appear once Apple's remaining computers feature a new display port.

So hopefully we'll see the completion of the MacBook Pro range soon, hopefully by Mac World. It's largely rumored that a new iMac is on the way, possibly with the newer LED screen, which would go brilliantly with the new Apple display as a duel monitor option!

I think we may see the Mac Pro and Mac Mini updates at mac world, both computer would benefit greatly with the new displays, especially as they have built in speakers, mic and iSight camera. I now a lot of people that have missed the stand alone iSight camera.

So with all Apple computers, soon to be having access to an iSight camera, (with speakers and Mic) will there be a big update to iChat? Maybe something a bit more like Skype with a windows option, without the need to rely on AIM?
If so would it come to the iPhone and Apple TV? Could the new displays work with the Apple TV allowing you to chat on your coach? If the new displays work with the Apple TV, then can we expect a large 42 inch Apple display, or an even better name for it, the Apple HDTV.

Okay all this talk about displays, I might as well through in the tablet!;)

Pure speculation mixed with logic and a bit of a wish list, anyways thanks for reading :)

Too bad there will be enough people willing to buy their hardware for them to make money.

Apple have always shipped the minimum memory with Mac Pros and Power Macs. I would expect to see two 1GB DIMMs, one for each processor.
Stock MacBook Pros have had more RAM than Stock Mac Pros / Power Macs on more than one occasion. I suppose that would hold true with the Nehalem Mac Pros. I expect 3 GB (for the triple-channel RAM) and no more. The 2009 MacBook Pro update is likely or at least plausible to have all 4 GB though.

I'm certainly interested to see how they approach it. I figure it will be one of:

2x1GB
1x2GB
3x1GB
2x2GB

I'd put my money on 1x2GB or 3x1GB.

I want to buy a Mac Pro, but the prices are extremely high right now and the mini just doesn't cut it. An iMac would do, but I'd much rather have an actual tower, not a laptop bottom. attached to a display. As said by just about everyone on MacRumors, ditch the mini and give us a $700 tower.
