I think if you are still using a ppc mac in 2012 either you have the software you need or like to use or you are just partial to it. I kinda get tired of people telling me that my ppc mac isn't going to do the job that I need it to do. My wife had an intel macbook pro and she sold it on ebay to get a G4 machine. She had g4 envy... LOL! I have my trusty 12in powerbook and when I have time to sit at my desk I use my G5 tower. I mean they still run ms office and adobe. I get it though... I use to freak out with the dudes that would get those apple 2's on the web...

i agree fully i bought my eMac a few weeks back knowing it obsolete and my iMac G3 died i love powerpc macs they suck on linux but good for mac i dont use office and i dont use iMovie (yet) i dont see why i should get a Intel Mac if i wanted intel i would build a hackintosh for a fraction the cost.

do u have a powerbook G3 or G4?

Not sure how to view this, seeing as I am new to the Mac World, and I bought my G5 as more of a toy than anything.

I do use my G5 alot, and I love it. But for a decent G5 ( real world prices, I got a steal on mine ), or even a top spec G5, if I was a typical user, I can get a refurbished 7 machine for about 300 dollars, that's gonna be SO much more compatible with new software. Which is kind of the point, would an average user want to spend 300-500 dollars on a old Top Spec G5, that isn't supported anymore. Or, spend that same money on a refurb 7 machine that can be far more easily and cheaply upgraded?

Not knocking PPC, but its the tuth. I love my G5, but it can in no way compare to my 7 machine, not can any PPC Mac in my opinion. I love my G5, really I do. Tho it can get really annoying with the fans. It can in no way compare to a decent newer Mac or PC rig.

Then again, I need a TON of power to do what I do, so its probably why the G5 is a side rig, and not my main.

Exactly the way I see it, if it does what you want it to, its all you need. But, alotta typical users want things like netflix, which a PPC Rig can't do. And they like to play newer games, which a PPC Mac can't do. They want the latest versions of word processors and half the damn video sites are switching to Sliverlite, which a PPC mac can't do. They want newer photo and video editors, which a PPC mac can't do. As pointed in this guys video, most of my personal cameras won't even talk to a PPC Mac, at all. Neither do most newer cameras.

You have a 2.4 GHz MacBook and you're going to use an 800 MHz Quicksilver as your main machine? That baffles me to be honest.

But I do agree with the fact that, if it does what you want it to do, then there's no point in forking nearly 5x more in some cases just to go Intel.

I was told i needed a Intel Laptop (One that can boot Windows) for my last year in High School this year but i only had to use it 3 times so far. it seems to me that the MacBook was a waste of my money:( I Plan on selling it when the year is done and mayby buying a G5 Quad to do some video editing:D

Its a G4 powerbook. Its always cool to the touch and rock solid. I never restart the machine and I have always loved the speedy way those machines go from sleep to work in 5 seconds.

exactly oh and i should also mention that you probably should install MacTubes if you view YouTube as this is the only way to view Youtube on PPC G4

well not a problem for me cuz i use RedBox not netflix if i did do netflix i can use my Xbox for that. I dont use office software of any kind i have no need for it. iMovie is just fine for video editing and i dont need to worry if a camera will work because my cellphone and camcorder both record to SD cards and a simple card reader's all i need. I don't do photo editing and if i was to attempt id simply use iPhoto or Picasa. I have a Windows 7 laptop i play my games on so i dont need that either.

you could boot windows just as simple on a Virtual Machine on a iBook G4

my eMac gets pretty hot at the end of the day i always shut it down i dont really trust a Mac to run 24/7 i move my eMac from room to room anyways so shutting down is not a big deal.

Oh come on.... Netflix... Lets not keep our eyes shut : better download a full blu-ray rip of whatever the movie of your choice than pay for a restricted choice on Netflix. I'm not encouraging anyone, neither saying thats what I do, but let's face reality, thats what everyone does.

...Or... rent a video at your local video store, that will probably have a bigger selection than Netflix (well at least it's the case for me).

Play newer games? Come on... you don't buy a mac to play games in the first place. I'd get a PC gaming tower any day along side my main PPC mac.

Photo editing? Geez. Don't tell me Photoshop CS4 doesn't have enough power to do all you need. Photoshop hasn't changed at all (for the most part) in the last 10 years.

Video?? Well the latest final cut pro sucks, everyone says its the end of Pro video editing for Apple. Just get the latest PPC one. Come on, do you think they made Lord Of The Rings on Final Cut Pro X?.... Of course I have to agree intense video editing in HD might be a problem. But how in the world can it be if you're gonna do home movies.

In the end.... only Pro HD video edit is a no-go. (Or am I missing something else?)

Totally agree with this. iMovie HD works absolutely fine with me & it's what I use, I have a PC & an XBOX for my gaming needs. Netflix is so overrated. And I have compared Photoshop CS2 to Photoshop CS5 &, well, you wouldn't think they are a decade apart lets put it that way.

The main one wanting you to think PPCs are useless in 2012 is Apple themselves...

Apple wants the average consumer looking to get into a Mac to buy a brand new machine, even if a PPC would satisfy their basic needs this day in time. Or else, they would be at a monetary loss.

I bet if developers still supported today's productivity apps on PPCs, 90% of them would run just fine (on the later G4's and G5's of course).

He explained his position and thoughts quite nicely and in a civil manner. Unlike some users in this forum who lash out at other users for even mentioning that they have a PPC. Let alone asking for help in solving problems or recommending what to buy and what not to buy and at what price is right for PPC.

As long as someone knows their own limitations and the limitations of the computer I don't see why one can't sill use a PPC.

I must be just uber lucky because my little book just never gets hot. Not to mention the form factor which is perfect for couch surfing IMHO.

I did try Windows 98 in Q on my PowerBook G4 1.5GHz and it was very slow it was like i was on a 90MHz Intel Pentium. It just would have not done it for School:(. My PowerBook will be my only Laptop agen when i sell my MacBook:)

user593829_pic1595_1330733347.jpg It had a hard life before i bought it:( But it works Great:D

The problem is there aren't enough later G4s and G5s to justify the time. While they could be fast enough, the number out there still working is minuscule compared to the number of Intel makes. Even though there are tons on Craigslist, it's got to be less than %1. It's just simply not worth anybody's time.

There's actually tons and tons and tons of overhead in keeping the development tools working for PowerPC (which they don't currently.) Keeping LLVM working on Intel alone is a full time job. Sure, it would pretty simple for a developer like me to support PowerPC, but that's hiding all the work Apple would have to do to make that possible.

And the fact of the matter is that PowerPC's don't even support modern GPU features.

Personally, PPC is all I need. I pretty much just surf the web and use iTunes and iChat. (I sync my iPod on my PC because I refuse to run 10.5, but thats a another story) If I want to watch YouTube, I just use the Download Helper plug in for Firefox to download them and watch them in VLC. I must admit, I do sometimes miss the excitement of finding new apps and getting new updates, but do I need them? No, the old versions work just fine and will continue to do so.

It's true that at this point, PPC is not really a viable solution for a lot of people, but for your low-end users such as myself, there's not a thing wrong.

i have no success with Q it hangs on the Windows 2000 installer:(

i was thinking of getting a PowerMac G5 as my pimary machine (using my eMac as a primary machine in a different room). How will does a 1.8GHz G5 work with youtube?

----------

I can't provide any experience with Windows 2000 on Q, but as for Virtual PC 7, it runs Windows 2000 very well on my G5.

do you know were i can download VPC7? since its not free ill need a patch

Works great at 360p and works fair at 480p. I have the crappy 5200fx so that may be a limiting factor for me.

G5 works fine with youtube once you download the modded Flash install linked elsewhere here

can i have a link to where this modded flash file is located and will it work on a G4? also as for that G5 it does not have a DVD burner and it has SATA HDD so is the DVD Drive SATA as well? Does the G5 have a IDE channel anywhere? this G5 is listed as having 2 exernal 3.5" bays does the G5 have any USB 2.0 Headers on the motherboard so i can install a USB internal card reader?

Also i have a 256MB AGP ATI Readeon 9550 card in my linux desktop this will be replacing the card included is 128MB so i assume i can take my Radeon 9550 and install it in this G5?
