Every version of OSX has a full server built right in. Even a unix apache web server. Can run php or whatever as well.

Slingbox is great, I have one too. But it uses up a tv (assuming you want to watch anything other then basic cable, which doesn't even have channels in HD in my area anymore). This app acts as a completely separate "tv". You can have it tuned to watch the game while watching something else on the big screen, or have a small HD quality portable tv anywhere in your house.

You can also use the app on 2 iPads at one time, whereas a slingbox is single-user. Not that 1 vs 2 is that big a deal, but that is an extra $250 for a second tv with the slingbox.

Both the slingbox and this app are great, and have their own unique features.

Very good points.
I have Sling box that I bought on eBay for $162. But I can only watch the same channel showing on the TV, which allows us to watch TV anywhere in the house.
I have DirecTV, and there is no CABLEVISION here.

Wow. TimeWarner officially sucks. They have more money, resources, and ability to release an awesome app like this, yet Cablevision steps it up?

If you find the need to want to take your live TV anywhere and buy a Slingbox why not just but an extra receiver and hookup to it. I have Directv I founded a Slingbox Solo on Craigslist for $80 and an extra HD receiver for $50. Hooked up, cost me $8 extra per month and I can watch it on my iPad or any computer, anywhere I have an Internet connection. Even if buying all new gear this is a $250 setup that allows me to have live TV and access to my DVR all the time anywhere I want.

As to the reliability claim, have had zero issues going on two years and a few co workers have never claimed to have any issues as well. I can't seem to find many threads in the Slingbox site about failed equipment. So far been very easy and maintenance free.

I really gotta admit, this app is absolutely awesome.

It is literally like having a tiny portable TV along with another cablebox (not DVR, but cable box) in your place...for me I'm in a 1 bedroom apartment with my girlfriend...where we share a single TV.

90% of the time we are watching things together. But the 10%, when I want to play a video game/watch one of my shows and she just wants to watch one of her shows, with this app...ALL is right now.

In fact to test it out I was playing my PS3, while we watched "Liar, Liar", which was on cable. The only issues I noticed was an occasional pause. It happened maybe 2 times in 2 hours and only lasted 15-30 seconds each time. Otherwise the picture quality was perfect and it just worked.

The overall design of the app is pretty great. It was VERY responsive and even the guide was excellent. Granted it's localized to your home network, but in my situation it's exactly what is necessary.

Also, I'm REALLY happy to see Cablevision step up in this way. My biggest problem with them was the OLD guide layout that is on their boxes. Fios is much more modern looking...but this app is redeeming.

Overall I'm extremely happy that another TV was just added to my apartment for no extra cost (granted I owned an iPad anyway)...I just hope they don't run into issues with any networks and are able to keep offering EVERY channel that is on my TV through the app.

10 internet points to you today Cablevision!

Wishing DirecTv would get off their asses already!

No kidding. Took them long enough to release the app they have now.

Its kind of funny, we switched from Time Warner due to customer service issues and new features that DirecTV offered a few years back - and now we feel as though DirecTV is falling behind in terms of what its offering its customers.

Sadly, I dont think they are able to offer anything, though. Wouldnt they have to offer their own internet service as well like TWC and Cablevision?

That is a solution, however, home data caps , slow upload speeds and quality loss from multiple transcodes puts a damper on it for many. Much cleaner solution to get it from the cable co on the iPad.

I have both and as far as quality the slingbox doesn't compare.

I really hope they don't back down and remove anything from the app. Content providers are just insane.

Maybe I'm just being a little think here but how does Cablevision get to show 300 channels but Time Warner doesn't?

Won't Cablevision have the same legal battles?

Cablevision has bigger balls.

Seriously, this is unchartered territory. I guess Cablevision decided to go all in while TW made a value bet.

I was gonna do just that, but then got turned off after reading all the negatives reviews on Amazon. Seems like the thing just doesn't last a day over the 90 day warranty, and then there is zero help after it quits working. A free (or even a paid) app seems to be a lot less of a pain and risk. I wouldn't advise anyone to buy a $250 piece of hardware from what's basically a no-name brand.

Hmmm, I have my SB for 4 years. It does not do much except reroute a singal from one place to another. Not much to go wrong with the box. I have my second HD box for about 4 months. No issues so far.

Yep this CableVision App is great, but for me it's just a bathroom app. Everywhere in my house I have a HD TV set. Even by the pool. Wish it had 3G coverage. They are still behind on multi-room DVR capability (or if they ever come out of pilot for their online DVR storage), and certain TV shows other carriers had for years, etc.

Hope Comcast adds streaming soon now they've been beaten to the punch. But I can forgive as they were early and allow me to control my cable box remotely, which Cablevision doesn't seem to have implemented yet. ...snip

Not that you would really care being on Comcast, but here you go:

Optimum iOS iPhone (since January 4 2011)

No *****. Cutting edge my azz.

Still waiting for the long anticipated new GUI for the wonder Motorola STB's/DVR's, and if that's any indication of wait time, I'm not holding my breath for an iPad app to roll out too soon.

Not to worry, Cablevision is still missing some feature you Verizon folks have had since day one.

Hopefully Apple, Amazon, Time and Cablevision will win big on this. Content providers are double dipping.

Yep. Personally if my carrier removed Fox I would not even notice. Unfortunately they have big ticket sports, so no chance of that disappearing for me. I could do without TBS, USA and TNT too, commercial laden and lame programming to boot.

Just buy a Slingbox and watch whatever channel you want, wherever you want.

I love mine.

And...this comment has absolutely nothing to do with this thread.

Again, people - apps like this are NOTHING like Slingbox which relays an existing tuner. These apps function as a free, additional tuner within the home!

I have cox wheres our cool apps?

You have Cox...

There's your problem right there.

In some markets, Cox still doesn't even pass through the digital (HD) versions of your local over-the-air channels to its basic cable subscribers. They FORCE you to sign up for the 100/mo. digital plan with the box. Or you have to add a digital antenna to your house/TV.

The Cox subsid in Gainesville/Ocala Florida even refused to give people their local WB channel back in the day.
