Everyone's so excited about this. Am I the only one who has enough TVs and would rather be able to access Live HD content (and my home DVR list of shows) on the go.

Who cares that you can take your iPad into the bathroom...?

I'd rather be able to have the SuperBowl playing LIVE on my iPad/iPhone when I'm AWAY from my home or traveling in a car/bus/etc...

"Ooh its like having a portable TV that's not tethered by any wires" -yeah except that as soon as your 500 feet away from your house, your TV goes away...

Well, when I sit at my kitchen counter, my TV in the living room is to my back. Now I can watch on my iPad. I don't want a TV and it's associated wires on my counter.

I do.

Who travels on Super Bowl Sunday?

So? Baby steps. It's going to take the content providers a long time to provide what you're looking for.

You only get live TV if you have iO TV and their crappy cable broadband service. No go if you don't have both. I was tired of paying for 15mbps down speed and only getting 2-3mbps so I switched only the broadband to FiOS.

Cablevision's key argument hinges on the fact that the content is not delivered over the Internet, and instead comes directly through the its digital cable network before being transmitted to the iPad via Optimum modem.

As someone who works in the industry, I'd really like to hear more about how this works, because the way they describe it isn't technically possible. Unless everyone has to buy some special Optimum modem that includes a digital tuner inside or all houses have a MoCA network running between the boxes and the modem (super-unlikely). A cable modem can't tune digital cable channels, so the service has to be coming via and IP network (Internet) unless the modem is interfacing with an existing digital tuner in the house (using one of the box's tuners and then streaming the channel out the ethernet).

just saw the headline here and went and downloaded it. So far working great with no problems. Picture quality is pretty good to excellent most of the time. I really like this app. I'd been hoping cablevision would do this so I can watch tv in my kitchen when i'm cooking or eating. The app is really well designed. It would be great if they could add ability to play stuff on your dvr at a later date, but not the end of the world if it's not technically possible.

Sure, it would be nice if you could do it anywhere, but this is new territory for cable companies and their content providers so I'm happy to see this first step since that will lead to second and third steps in the next couple of years.

It only requires iO TV. Not Internet. It should work for you.

The FAQ in the app says an Optimum authorized modem connected to a secure wireless B (or above) router.

I take that to mean their cable modem or your own with their service.

If you read the press release it says you don't require their Internet service. Have you tried the app?

Come on FIOS. Step your game up. Verizon, it's your turn!

Go Comcast, DirectTV, dish dudes etc.

If they all do it maybe the content providers get the idea that we are just watching their same stuff on a different size screen, hence no extra $$$.

I have had their service since 2004, and have consistently had 15/2 service everyday, with maybe 1 day of downtime. Maybe their management is questionable, but they have a great service. The app works great at my house.

seriously, I cannot say this enough. FIOS owners should be pissed. FIOS, wtf????

Honestly, whether you have 1000 tvs or not, does not matter. It's your money and your device. If you CHOOSE to watch something in the bathroom, you should be able to.

Yes I have tried the app. The FAQ says it requires you to have "an Optimum authorized modem connected through your home wireless network" which I don't have since I have FiOS instead. Now why would I want an optimum cable modem connected to my home network if I don't use optimum online.. Everything works except the live tv part. I don't mind, since I wouldn't watch tv on it anyhow.

First of all, to clear something up:

It's been reported that if you have video service through Cablevision but your internet service is through another provider, they'll provide you with a "internet deactivated" cable modem so you can use the app. I haven't seen anything that explains whether you need a router with two WAN ports or if it will work over one of the device ports.

Meanwhile, it's been tested with a VPN and apparently works fine, so yes, you can use it over 3G or any other connection that you can use to connect to your VPN: http://www.waywardweb.com/2011/04/0...with-optimum-for-ipad-on-3g-and-roaming-wifi/

As far as whether or not Cablevision is making up their loophole, I doubt it. They'll be in huge legal trouble if it's not (Though I'm curious as to why the few channels not included for whatever rights reasons are public/local access and all of Music Choice's channels. It feels random). Plus, from what I could tell myself and what others have reported, it doesn't use up any of your internet connection's bandwidth.

Has anyone here who owns one of the pre-mirroring video output cables (especially composite, which I'd like to use) tried using it with this app and if so, does it work?

Anyway, it's an incredible app (and I hope it works with the older output cables), though there are some hiccups here and there that I hope they fix:

- Some channels show the overscan area, including the closed captioning line.
- Sometimes a dialog box will open with the X (partially or completely) offscreen.
- The full guide kills the audio of what you were watching. You have to use the "what's on now" guide.
- The lag. What's causing the delay? The routing from modem to router to iPad combined with the H.264 encoding somehow slowing them down?
- The volume output is too weak.

There was some on demand content I tried accessing and couldn't (a Pawn Stars episode), but they've said that missing VOD is because it hasn't been encoded, I think. The error message was a little confusing and could be interpreted as telling me to "order" the program on a box and then try to play it on the iPad again, which I didn't try, but I doubt that's what it meant.

I also wonder if this means the other long promised Cablevision services ("PC Media Relay" and cloud DVR) are coming soon.

For what it's worth, I had speed issues myself until yesterday, when a tech realized we needed a DOCSIS 3.0 router. Since then, we've been getting 14/2 pretty consistently. The upload is pretty much ALWAYS 2 Mbps, which is interesting. Never really dips and never gets higher.

Dont get it says

"You must be connected to your home network and signed in to watch Live TV"

for me. iPad is connected to him network (with cablevision modem) and im signed in.

What gives?

FWIW, I'm on their Customer Advisory Panel (take a bunch of surveys) and they poll about those services as well as cellular services. IMO, they have some neat stuff coming.

I think they are making a distinction between the internet and their IP network. Where the Internet is accessible by anyone, and their IP network is only accessible by cablevision customers.

Do you have a cable box at home or do you use CableCards?

Wow. TimeWarner officially sucks. They have more money, resources, and ability to release an awesome app like this, yet Cablevision steps it up?

lol, now if COX cable could do the same - they have a DVR ipad app - but nothing nearly as cool as this.

It's just randomly not working for a bunch of people due to some outage or something. Apparently they're working on it.
