"We're excited to announce the Driver's License Pro Max, the greatest leap forward in driver's licenses since the first driver's license. We can't wait to see the incredible things our citizens are able to do!"

Why the heck are digital plates even tracking GPS location? Sounds like an excellent reason never to get one.
I'd imagine so you can geofence your car? Kinda like how you can do that with either a Bouncie plug-in for your car or how you can your Tesla with the app.

I will hold any criticism until we really understand what they're offering, but, there are plenty of issues with the CA DMV website so I'm not overly optimistic ... and it's only a 35min flight from Sacramento to San Jose so TC could lobby maybe a bit more ...

The Real ID thing is still not a smooth process. And that's been an ongoing thing for most people for 3 or 4 years now. The fact that the Government is extending the Real ID deadline from 2023 to 2025 (an extra two years) means that they really screwed up the process for millions of citizens still unable to obtain one.

If they can't get the Real ID straightened out... I have no faith in a "new" digital ID.

They should just turn to Satan to get things done with Futuristic IDs. The process is easy. Everyone is qualified. Everyone gets issued an ID. Every citizen has the same ID number. 666

I get the International Driving Permit from from AAA (American Automobile Association) for about $32 with two photos valid for one year from the start date the buyer selects. That certifies the USA driver's license with pertinent details in many languages.

"We're going to do it like no other state has done it."

This is the main problem. All the states should be on the same page. If they were to follow the same pattern/protocol there won't be any delays or hiccups.
I'm happy California is doing this right rather than the lowest common denominator that would come out of states that refuse to have competent IT staffs.

We’re going to do it like it’s 1984!! I wish Orwell was alive.
With this technology, what is the downside for the end user? Maybe someone brought the fact, that you made an online post offensive to a transgender activist, to the attention of the California government. Would they be able to shut it down remotely, “to keep the community safe?”

Maybe you don’t like that scenario. Think of it this way instead: What if the Nazis had had that technology? If you were a Jew or a Social Democrat, how would they use it against you?

Remember, this country was born out of a very healthy suspicion of government. If you are okay with Governor Newsom being in charge of these digital IDs, how would the picture change, if Devin Nunes became governor down the road?

Newsflash: Aside from your political ********ting here, you are wrong, the state can suspend licenses whether they’re plastic or digital. So if you have plastic in your wallet if it’s suspended (for a real reason like you were convicted of a DUI), you still broke the law if you were driving. Digital doesn’t change a fundamental fact that your license status is controlled by the DMV.

Now every time I point this out, then someone says “well I just want to use it to prove my age, you’re still allowed to show a suspended license to buy booze”. Great, then do that, show the plastic version, no one told you to throw it out.

Digital is a great option for people who want to use it, and no one is forcing you to use it! I wish I had digital license available to me!

We have digital licenses in Australia, in New south Wales it's in an app called Service NSW ... can't add it to Apple Wallet yet, though.

Anyone who willingly hands over their phone to law enforcement, and thinks nothing of it, gets what they've got coming.
