How about something that is stupidly missing from iOS since launch, which is the option to place Apps or Folders anywhere you want on the screen?!?!?!?!

Is it really that much of a ridiculous request???

I am wary about handing anyone my unlocked phone. If the ID was all they had access to then maybe.

name a single topic where all states are on the same page...

Your physical driver's license is accepted in all 50 states.

It can be done. It is just that the political will needs to be there. The only way for the political will to be there is for enough people, on both sides of the political spectrum, demand it.

Quick question- when is this coming to North Carolina? Also, if Newsom decides not to allow Apple Wallet integration, it'll be yet another reason to dislike the man.

I've used my digital ID at Denver International Airport. It was pretty neat. There was no need for the boarding pass as the ID is connected to the system. I tapped my phone w/ the digital ID and scanned my face. TSA agent verified I had a flight and I was good to go through to Pre Check.

"We're going to do it like no other state has done it."

This is the main problem. All the states should be on the same page. If they were to follow the same pattern/protocol there won't be any delays or hiccups.
Yup. Sounds like a total mess! It's like the reason why have so many different kinds of toll/bridge passes; because one state authority to the next does not coordinate. Or, they coordinate but only in subgroups.

Heck name some where more than one state has a common stand. If it's not Federal you'll have 50+ different sets of rules

I just want a mountain goat DL!!!!

One step closer to a microchip implant that will replace all forms of ID
Unless he rips off someone's hand, let's hope he doesn't figure that one out.

Don't they always do everything like no other state 😂

Hope ALL states roll digital ID's out soon. This was announced forever ago!
I'll be dead twice by the time PA gets it. They're ridiculously slow on anything modern

Drive safely and don't get pulled over. And keep a charger in the car.
I was actually thinking the charger part. Or keep the actual license on you. It still makes it easier with the phone by not having to dig the physical DL out

I wonder how he plans to do the little brown change-of-address cards digitally.
Hopefully no longer needed, and it will just update the digital to the new address.

Didn't their digital license plates JUST get hacked?
That's how they are doing it like no other state." No other states can claim their stuff is that easy to hack lol. This is dumb though. Every state should be on the same page so it doesn't take forever to take off and catch on.

Living in Philly, I sent 5 change-of-address cards and my speeding ticket had my change of address but did they change my address in time? No. When I called, the representative said "backlog" in response to why none of the five cards weren't yet processed after months of waiting.

I just got my iPhone stolen and dealing with the headaches of how apple executes “lost” mode. God no. The iPhone becomes an expensive brick mind you but hot dog, every single service tied to all my devices becomes endless customer service hours of non stop explaiNing, not going to lie, it works beautiful but I’m so glad I still got my physical ID because I would had totally missed my flight if it weren’t for this.
I treat my phone (and iPad) as carefully as I would my wallet, meaning I don't leave it unattended outside the home. Given how much the phone itself costs, plus the risk of everything you do on your mobile devices (including banking), I'm surprised anybody treats it as any less in need of vigilance.

Anyone wanting to bring up mugging, pick pocketing, and the like - you would lose your physical wallet in such a scenario, anyway.

So you had to present an ID and do a biometric scan?

At any rate, you don’t have to show boarding passes any longer. Just ID. Even with old fashioned analog IDs.

Doing it like no other...

I guess that I will believe it when I see it but the ca dmv still uses a paper process that requires a paper check to get ev hov stickers so I'm not confident that "doing it like no other" is going to yield something better than a framework that apple has already laid out and ready to use.

I do as well, but after the traveling from holidays, plane delays, no sleep and my kids distracting me because they needed help, before i noticed my phone was gone and it was too late, in 12 years of owning an iPhone this was my first time of getting it stolen ever, it was great to know that the thieves realized it was an expensive brick at that rate but damn, I’m still reeling from the headaches of the side chatter between apple and my bank after disabling lost mode.

Apple Pay although secure will affect how the digital mobile pay works in the bank cards on your apple account, after three days of bickering and getting the run around from both service teams I threw in the towel and just re-ordered everything new.

My biggest take away from all this is that my iPad Pro and Apple Watch although linked to same number and all being cellular become useless after the iPhone itself is in lost mode, also some of my two step configuration apps can only be ran from one app at a time which iPhone takes priority so when I was trying to reach my iPhone and track it through find my iPhone At that rate just imagine even with an esim, a lot of apps that use your number As a back up which won’t go through because of it Your phone will disable it self in lost mode.

If they want to implement Digital ID they need to implement digital means of alternate restore backups that can work when the phone is either getting replaced or sent back.

Y’all are funny. Who cares that each state is “doing its own thing”? A REALID (digital or physical) is and will be universally accepted at all US airports. And let’s face it, its only a matter of time before the the passport goes digital as well. You’re worried about privacy or you don't like it? Then simply “DO NOT USE IT”. Nobody’s obligating anyone to do anything, its simply another option that we’re being given (and frankly a more convenient one) But don't try and cra* on or stop the inevitable.

I actually don’t know why Apple thought this would be a good target for standardisation. I mean, I would love to see it! But I’m far too pessimistic.

For starters, it’s government controlled. Government bureaucracy is going to make it a non-starter in MANY states and countries.

Secondly, many countries already have solutions. So it’s tech that is late to the scene except for the US which is usually late to the party.

Finally, it’s really so contentious. Your ID is one of THE most important documents of your life. And it demands privacy, but somehow it also demands no privacy. It’s highly sensitive and can be used to ruin your life. But in many states and countries, you’re expected to share the details with a large number of service providers, and good luck sharing in a redacted or encrypted manner. Many services/institutions/governments will be like “no, we want to see the whole thing, uncensored.” It would be nice to think that demand can be refused, but in many jurisdictions or for services/businesses - it isn’t an option. It will be no difference adding on Apple-standards. Need an RFID scanner to authenticate? Watch many jurisdictions say no to that. It will become “plastic licence as primary” and acceptance might be zero.

I also find it interesting also that we are just coming off the back of the covid tracking apps - and we all saw how apples standard went there. Most states chose to do it “their way.” The Apple method failed to reach market. Despite being open, secure, and supported.

So. I’m skeptical. But I am interested!

The Apple method is the method that is registered with the ISO. Same could be said about Apple Pay. You don't look for an Apple Pay specific terminal, just one that takes EMV Contactless payments.

No, I just used the ID in the Apple Wallet and tapped my phone, scanned my face, and they confirmed. Didn't realize the boarding pass wasn't needed for physical ID's though.
