Not in the Netherlands

both games aren't for sale in the Dutch App Store... oh well, we can't buy/rent movies/tv shows in iTunes over here and no Apple TV over here (although you can buy the Apple TV AppleCare protection plan LOL)

it is but its garbage, the optimization in that game is so bad my computer cant even get 60fps (its a dirty console port)

if my gaming rig cant do it, no mac can

Core2duo E8400@4.04GHz
8GB DDR2@1200MHz
Dual GTX470s in SLI
2048x1536 23" Samsung monitor

You have a piece of crap CPU. I have less ram and only have 470 SLI and can run it at 60 fps easily with everything maxed out (at 1080p).

$49.99 for a game that came out 2+ years ago? I guess they're following their hardware philosophy; charging people out the rea end.

so for all you whiners out there...who cant get cod bo on your mac...download the parallels and stop whining...or if you are complaining about the virtualization slowing things down, get a mac pro, download parallels, then stop whining. :D

Given the lag in GPU's in Macs vs. PC, this makes total sense. A two year old PC game is pretty 'modern' with the current shipping Macs.

Perfect solution, buy a 3K computer to do what a 1.5K Windows computer can do. This is exactly why we need a headless Mac (e.g. iMac w/o the screen + PCI slots). If a mainstream Mac computer existed that could take PCI graphics cards, the price would go down and the selection would go up.

For 50 dollars for very old games available cheaper else where I doubt it. Unless people really are suckers.

They are suckers though. I was in an Apple Store in december and some dude bought a copy of civilization 4 which didn't include colonization for something like $60. It was $6.20 on steam at the time for mac and windows. WTF.

Aspyr ports and sells hardware?! Why did no one tell me?!

Yeah, I remember back when there were cheap G4 towers that you could expand and we definatey didn't have the problem of no selection of graphics cards. All the graphics cards were also priced the same as the respective PC versions. And all the games had launch ports! Puppies also cured cancer back then too, before Chuck Norris.

Despite obvious violation of App Store terms

Call of Duty 4 is written for windows and DirectX. It's then wrapped inside Transgaming's Cider virtualization engine, which maps directx and win32 calls to OpenGL and OS X, introducing CPU overhead and often loss of fidelity (e.g. pixel shaders).

Good to see Apple pawning cheap windows ports on their app store. And from its success, it sounds like consumers are eagerly shelling out $$ for degraded gameplay.

Meh. I'll still wait for it to be on Steamplay. I'm not paying twice. Not at that price. I'll dualboot until that day comes.

Anybody know how Call of Duty would run on a current 15 inch i5 macbook pro with 4gb ram? What about on my 1920x1080 monitor? I had some issues playing Call of duty 1 through windows on the same machine, very laggy and almost unplayable on med/low settings. Is that the computer, or something wrong with drivers/windows?

thanks

Not sure why everyone is hating on Apple for "interfering" with Steam. Microsoft will soon be doing the same thing when they come out with their App Store. Actually, with GFWL they've already been doing it.

You'd have to be a complete imbecile to buy Colonization on the app store and not steam. You can get it for $20 and you get the Mac and windows versions. Not only that but it goes on sale regularly. The entire civ 4 collection was $6 during Christmas. Lol I hope none of you waste your money on the app store version.

See there one problem with stream or steam what every you call it.. YOU NEED TO BE ONLINE ALL THE TIME.. So if I have my laptop and there is no internet then I can not play my games.. At least when I download a game from app store or some where else, I can play without needing internet to play it..

Why are the Games US-only!? Really sucks to not be able to find them in the german store.

I'm afraid CoD 4 is not allowed in the civilised world. :)

Unrelated,

I think the OP is wrong regarding Amazon being a better deal for the makers than the App store. The makers of the game get much less than 70% from a sale on Amazon AND they have to make and ship physical media. So online dist is a win-win, just like for the record companies, AND they're killing the 2nd hand market.

And the reason they should charge more for the electronic version (almost no duplication/distribution cost) compared to the boxed version is what exactly????

Agree that the pricing needs to shake out.

Steam has an offline mode.

Greed?

…which is of course one of the seven deadly sins which in turn means that the makers of this 1st person shooter probably won't make it into Heaven. :)

This is simply not true. In general, you do not need to be online to play your Steam games. In the cases in which an online connection is required to play, it is a DRM issue, not a Steam issue... ie you would need to be online to play the game whether you purchased it through Steam or installed it from a disk.

Steam has an offline mode.

That is true, Steam will run perfectly offline, until it decides not to.
either to check for updates or sometimes it will just try to go online and won't let you do anything until you are able to go online.

Due to my work I can't go online for weeks at a time, It sucks when suddenly I can't play anything because Steam is having a bad day.

Explain how I play my Steam bought Civilization IV/Colonization games without being online then ?

There's one problem with your post : You have no clue what you're talking about. The Steam client can start in offline mode and you can play all your games offline, barring any kind of DRM that would require an online connection in the game itself.

Never happened to me.

That would be like Microsoft redirecting the interest away from Games for Windows Live to Steam. My only complaint with Steam is that the client is a dog and has a ton of errors and odd behavior due to the ancient API's they are using.

yeh that's my biggest issue with steam. always seems be crashing on me -

You are not really missing anything. There are better media streamers than ATV and there are definitely better gaming computers/games than Macs.
