Should run fine, although you'll need to tweak your settings, maybe lower some of the texturing, anti-aliasing, resolution, in order to get good frame rates.

You'll need to install XP via Boot Camp on a separate partition. Find Boot Camp Assistant on your Mac (Utilities folder, IIRC) and follow the prompts. You'll need a current disk for Windows XP with a valid license (buy an OEM version from NewEgg - $140). I used the defaults in BCA, 32 gig partition, FAT32. If you have a lot of other games or other stuff, you may want a bigger partition, but be aware that if it's larger than 32 gig, you'll need to reformat the partition as NTFS instead of FAT32 (those prompts are part of the Windows install). You'll have to install the appropriate drivers after the install is done (insert the Leopard disk and it's done automatically) and you'll have to go to Windows Update site and load up all the latest Windows updates.

I gave up on all Mac gaming a while ago. It's to much to have to boot into Windows every time I want to play. That's why I built myself a gaming pc, which is already having problems by the way :(

Yeah Windows does have problems. Windows is already at 85% of speed of OS X, benchmarked with geekbench, when OS X is run almost 24/7, and windows is run maybe once a week.

No problem with Mac gaming. Simple with bootcamp...

1. In OS X, restart, hold option key, wait 10 seconds, select windows partition.

2. Do something while windows boot up and becomes usable (5 minutes?), such as pay your bills, drink some water, lift some weights...

3. Play game

4. To restart back to Mac OS, just click the "Start" menu, and "Log off computer" and Restart, do something else while windows shuts down.

Well, that SNIPER level is a bit*h though... Playing on the second highest difficulty.

Fricking A man. This Call of Duty 4 is like the best FPS I have ever played, and I'm playing Crysis still.
I like this game just a little bit more. (Both great)

The realism of combat is quite incredible and the story line and danger draws you in. You always feel like either you're in danger
in the heat of suspense and then at key moments you feel the victory of having an edge finally and breaking through. Well dramatized!

I've played dozens of FPS shooters, and it all started off with Wolfenstein. I've felt little innovation from FPS shooters over the years, but CoD4 is really
fun and a great war to fight.

Performance:
30-50FPS, avg 40 fps with 1680x1050 med settings and high settings on Mac Pro x1900 XT /Vista / 2GB ram is visible.

I'm playing at 1344x1280 on a 30" ACD, Windows XP, Mac Pro/1900XT, 2 gig RAM in Windows, 4-core 3ghz. FRAPS shows an average frame rate of about 75 FPS. Average minimum was about 45, avaerage maximum was about 85, this over 4 different maps.

4x antialiasing on, textures and lighting all set at normal.

current Macs would be fine for CoD4

The current Macs should be fine for CoD4.

I suspect a current Macbook Pro would run it fine (mine is a generation old and I haven't tried it on here yet).

I play CoD4 on my XP PC. I'm running an old FX60 Socket 939 w/ a 7900GS card. I play 1280x1024 with mid-upper settings and I've never noticed lag. It's a solid system but not great by any stretch. The 8600GT i've got at work is a much faster card and that's mid range today.
I haven't run FRAPS but I don't wank off because I hit X fps. It just needs to look good and play smooth.

CoD4 looks good but it isn't super intensive. It's like Valve's engine, looks great, runs lean. My same system listed above runs full rez on my 19" and the self configuration turns almost everything to Max.

I understand that it takes a lot more horsepower to push the graphic envelope just a bit more. The complexity grows faster than the apparent visual quality gain. I do have to wonder about games like Crysis and Eldar Scrolls Oblivion. They look great but I wonder if there's a conscious effort to not optimize because having a game engine that runs like **** is somehow proof that your game is bad ass. I think, at the very least, there is a conscious decision to do things the hard way in the bleeding edge games. There's a scene in HL2 Ep2 where they're outside on a roof and they do some tricks to render the mountains. The background is a matte that moves against the sky as you move. It looks great. Sure they could have rendered the mountains way off but Valve did it for hardly any GPU cycles and it looks great.

ffakr.

Attack of the Show announced that CoD4 for Mac will be available "LATER".
The makers of CoD4 are "tweaking" the windows into mac to make the gameplay as same as playing it for Windows ( If u have ever played it on windows).

Just got another copy COD 4 for the MacBook Pro. It's running great in Windows with Boot Camp. I'm surprised how well it's running. Everything is turned up except anti-aliasing, which is off.

Well Crysis is a pretty well optimized game, it runs great at medium/high settings and still manages to look better than anything else out there, it runs slow as molasses in Very High... but look at the visuals.

Haha yeah its a bitch! I had to go from hard difficulty to easy just to beat that part then back to hard after that. You're so close to the end!!!:D

i totally chickened out and went and hid in a corner and got through it!! was behind a tree before and was just getting hit from both sides!!

i've been playing the whole thing on the medium setting - didn't want it to be too easy and didn't want it to be too frustrating!!

i'm in the launch code bunker now so the end is very close l!!

You might wanna call (or email) MS and see if they'll be kind enough to send you a replacement (maybe for a fee). Not sure if that'll work but its worth a try.

Can you guys who are playing on a 24" ALU iMac in boot camp post your settings for CoD4? I am playing on 1280x1024 with most settings on medium and 2x AA on but I can't help but think I could get more frames. I even updated my ATI drivers in XP (with the 2600 XT ones) and still think I should be able to play at higher settings.

The game is simply brilliant though....I can't get enough of it.

Turning off AA would give you a boost.

I tried but the difference (to me) wasn't enough to justify turning it off completely. Besides, I've read that people are playing on the "highest" settings in the game, and I assume this would include AA, correct?

I couldn't figure out how to change difficulty (playing on 2nd hardest difficulty) so I just keep playing it over and over and finally beat that level (while I was in the airport waiting for a connecting flight).

From what I read the game MIGHT change difficulty slightly if you don't get pass a certain point.

Tip / Spoiler below in white text, highlight it to show:
What works for me is to sit close to the other guy. Getting to the last save point is not too difficult.

Shoot the ones coming down the ropes. You should be able to get 10 (pretty much impossible to survive if you don't kill enough of them). And keep shooting between 12 and 2 o'clock to make sure they don't get too close.

I've played it on the 360--great game! What I can't believe is why people persist in being played by the GPU and computer game manufacturers. It's so much simpler to buy a console that *will* play whatever's made for it for at least two or three years, no questions, no exceptions. And you can easily exceed the price of a modern console with a new graphics card--but...it's flat out crazy to me that people would persist in playing the upgrade/graphics game on their desktops and laptops. Oh well. In the meantime, the rest of us will simply pop our games into our consoles without checking anything beyond the facts that the logos match, press the power buttons, and get to playing. No installation, no uninstallation, no patches, no downloads, no compatibility checks, no keyboards, no nonsense. They "just work"! :^)

I see what you are saying but consoles don't work so well for LAN parties. Sure you can hook up online and play but LAN parties are just so much fun!! Don't get me wrong, I love my XBOX and Wii for my own personal play and when a friend comes over. But I really don't line to go online with them and play. WIth a computer I do. Strange, I know.

There are a lot of strengths to the gaming console: Having the peace of mind knowing that whatever game you put in will 'just work' is priceless. I also like the relative 'instant-on' feature of gaming consoles. And also knowing that for at least the next three years or so your console is going to be fully supported and 'up-to-date' is also a very nice feature. And then there is the nice price.

BTW, I played COD 4 on the 360 as well and its a blast. I hope that it comes out for the Wii.... some day.

I'm playing through on the second-toughtest difficult level, and the end of that level is pretty tough. I got through it by laying a spread out defence of C4 and Claymores, then likewise retreating to hide behind cover on the other side of the ferris wheel from McMillan - it's one of the few places with cover that they can't/won't sneak up behind you.

Great game, better than I expected (thought previous Calls of Duty were more linear in their level design), but the dogs are driving me nuts:

If you don't grab them, the message says to grab the dog's jaws when it bites.
If you grab it too late, the message says to grab the dog's jaws before it bites.
If you grab it too early, the message says to wait until it bites before grabbing, i.e. after.

So, as long as you grab it once, just before, during and after, you're ok.

Never mind the fact that you can down a Kamov helicopter with one shot, fight through hundreds of soldiers and armour, but a dog will kill you every time...
