Call of Duty 4

hey machspeed5, thats great

what video settings are you using?

are you running any special enhancements for the games?

didn't i mention the vid settings?

special enhancements? just running the lastest updates on all the games.
but also tried a DX10 hack to enable VERY HIGH settings in XP for crysis. beautiful but unplayable btw. low fps.

btw i recommend you all check out the nvidia tech demos!!! human head is surreal and will play (a few fps though) and check out froggy!! 30+fps

nzone.com

and, no TV. i'm playing on the 15" screen which is beautiful BTW, apparently it uses an IPS panel (seriously?? doubt it) but the LED backlighting is incredible compared to my powerbook! so bright. on occasion i'll hook it up to a 30" ACD for shîts and giggles when playing COD4. ;)

Actually I meant what kind of graphic drivers you are using. And numbers if you can? Such as the driver and driver version.

If you have 10.5, pick up a copy of Win XP and COD4 for PC. I run this on my iMac, it's phenomenal. $30 for the game, $77 for Win XP Pro (I work for a school so I got a discount on Windoze). Cheapest option, COD4 runs wonderfully.

That said - we are starting to see a trend, which is games are moving away from the PC platform and moving toward the consoles. Why? The consoles are "known hardware configurations". MUCH easier and more efficient for game developers.

So in the end, if you are set on COD4 (and you should be!), either the 360 or WinXP on your Intel Mac. Not a huge Xbox fan personally, I'd prefer a PS3, but... no COD4. :(

I don't by Mac games any more. Just my personal choice. Why? Been burned too many times. The last / worst one was with ID and Quake 4. They essentially neutered MP on Quake 4 for Mac users, no apologies, no fix (at least as of v1.4). That was enough for me, Aspyr won't see any more of my cash.

What do you mean?

I play CoD 4 on my PS3 all the time. o.o

Woweee...I played the demo on my low end penryn MBP. Damn nicer than I thought it would look on the 8600M GT. Can I expect similar performance in multiplayer?

Anyone care to comment on the drivers they are using that yield great results?

I agree, console gaming is great, no reboots, and less hassle, it just works.

However, consoles also create more clutter in your house, I like my place to be as streamlined as it can be.

I got rid of all my consoles, and my desktops, as well as monitors.

I recently moved, and wish for my place to be as simple as can be.

I'm actually considering selling my 1080p 47inch tv and buy a samsung 32 inch 720p so it takes up less room.

Sad thing is, I will likely rebuy the ps3 when metal gear comes out.

Then I'll just hide it in the closet when I'm not using it, or cover it up with a cloth.

no way am I getting a 360 again, less they create machines that do no make so much noise!

You update the drivers? The default ones are pretty awful. I think Im using 169 something and that seems to help.

Yeah I have. I've tried 169.09, and 171.23 (I think) as that was recommended, and most games are stuttery as hell, COD4 in particular. I can't even play it at low res.

I would think better since your CPU is relieved of a LOT of tasks (and practically only takes care of a few simple physics, geometry and networking) and the levels are much more compact and less elaborate. I personally get flying framerates on MP compared to SP but it's still laggy because of my crappy connection, I don't play much online because of that.

you must be doing something wrong.

I tested mine out yesterday, and had no problems, even played at the native res. And at native it was choppy, but looked amazing, and was very playable, no slow down.

Played mp with 1024x768 (i think) just testing it out, and had no real problems.

Also played unreal tournament 3, had no problems, no slow downs at all, playing at the native res.

Same with Team Fortress 2, no slow down, all beautiful, settings at high, and at default res, no slow down.

oh, and this is using vista ultimate (couldn't find my XP cd, so just loaded up my ultimate dvd) =X

Just because i'm paranoid about downloading 'wrong' drivers for my 2.4GHZ SR MBP, could someone just post a download link of the best one?

I think the site is labtopvideo2go.com or something, but I'd rather someone recommend me a driver to download.
Thanks

So, I'm planning on having a Penryn MBP soon. Is the consensus that Vista runs COD4 better than XP? I was planning on using XP for bootcamp/parallels because Vista is the reason I'm switching in the first place, but if it runs games much better on it than on XP I might be swayed.

From what I've read, it sounds like XP is running better than Vista.

But anyway, I have a new MacBook right now (2.2 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo with 2 512MB 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM chips and factory video card running leopard), and I don't exactly have a ridiculous budget so I'm workin on getting everything required. I'm getting COD4 and XP soon, and I have Bootcamp - of course. So I was seeing what I would need to upgrade whether it'd be the video card or ram or vram or what.

I've been reading on this thread that MacBook Pros are the way to go for laptops, otherwise a desktop is what we're lookin for, but is it possible to get the necessities on a MacBook without spending obscene amounts of money.

I've played at my buddy's house on his PC and desperately want it at home, but let's just say my paychecks are holding me back. Is there a video card in particular that's a good considering its price?

You cant upgrade video card on a notebook.

And COD4 probably isnt even supported on integrated graphics, but if it runs it will be s l o o o o w.

I already have CoD4 on my Mac, on my windows partion.

Runs perfect on bootcamp at least, at full graphics. ;) But we all know performance is a bit weaker in Mac OS X.

I'm looking forward to this, in hope that I dont need to log over to windows all the time I want to play CoD4, when just having a little "play break", instead of logging over to windows and have to dedicate 100% of my time to play a game.

I just REALLY hope the Steam CD key(Purchased CoD4 through Steam) will work with the retail Mac version... so I dont need to buy another copy of the game. I strongly doubt I'd do that if thats my only choice for playing it on mac. I rarely buy games, so not gonna go crazy and buy 2 of the same game.

it runs on my friends laptop (around the same specs as a macbook), albeit at only 15 - 25 fps

Get a PS3

PS3 are way better then xbox's trust me I have both, so don't waste your time on an Xbox. Mine has broken twice, in a month.

those are the ones. have a look round their site they explain everything you need to know.

you must download the drivers and the Modded INF file. you need that file for the drivers to work properly as nVidia doesnt usually include support for mobile chipsets directly (despite the chips being pretty much identical to desktop parts)

nVidia leaves the support up to the laptop manufacturers and they are nearly always way behind on drivers.

i think the basic premise is, download the drivers, download the modded INF, extract the drivers from their archive, swap the INF files, then install.

that should be all you need

Just as an update, i DID install the labtop2go drivers, and bought the game. I own a MBP 2.4GHZ Santa Rosa, and i keep the resolution at 1440 x 900 without AA, but with all the textures on the highest, and most of the settings enabled (besides specular map, and shadows), and it plays GREAT

I play with these settings online, because online the game plays alot smoother than it does in the single player. I still use these settings for single player but put it at 1280x800 when the frame rate stutters alot.

I'm getting about 50-60+ FPS online, and it feels very smooth to me.

Just bought the game today and it plays brilliantly on my MBP. Very satisfied.

Shadows and specular map destroy the card (shadows more so), so if you want a smooth online experience then turn those off and after a while you will forget they were off.
