I tried the COD4 demo on XP under boot camp yesterday on my MBP 2.2/4GB RAM, and wasn't exactly impressed with the performance! I have to have it on the lowest 800* res setting, and even then it's barely fantastically smooth...

Is something wrong? Crysis and others are also the same.

I just started playing the demo using boot camp on my 20" imac and knowing that CoD4 is coming out for mac in may, does it pay to wait, or just get it for pc now. Will i notice any difference in performance, or anything? i just really want to play it now:)

You might need to install the latest drivers for your card and since it's a mobility card you'd be best served with a modified driver like NGOHQ (I'm supposing you have an 8600M MBP), that should help with your performance tremendously. Overclocking your card could also bring huge gains to performance.

You could also try defragmenting the drive to smooth out the experience and experience less stuttering though the framerate will stay at pretty much the same level but it might feel just a lot smoother.

It runs decent on my 2,6 Penryn T9500 C2D with an 8600 GT, under Vista, but seriously mate. Lately these games have become serious graphics hawks. Particularly crysis. this game was made for the future. it takes 3 way SLI to run it with everything on highO_O

Cool - well my 2.5 Penryn (4GB RAM, same 512mb VRAM as you) comes tomorrow - so I'm hoping it'll be a decent improvement.

It's annoying, because UT4 runs brilliantly, even at the top 1900* res, and it's still graphically impressive today even though it's 4 years old. And I have to run something like COD4/Crysis at the lowest settings for it to be playable, making it look terrible compared to the 4 year old UT4, on my system!

Well, if you really want a great looking game that will run amazingly, then check out Orange Box. The graphics in HL2:Episode 2, Portal and Team Fortress are all amazing. Im sure it will also run amazing on your system.
Valve are masters at optimizing their games for alot of different hardware. Even though HL2 is old, it still looks awesome. And when you see it run in 1900*... it will look as good as COD4.

I hate to say this but I've got the same system that you are getting (well, 3 gigs of ram instead of 4) and the game runs like CRAP on my brand new MPB. I cannot figure it out, I found a video on youtube of someone with a older 2.4ghz MBP pushing something like 50 FPS average which would be acceptable with maxed resolution and other eye candy turned on, and when I try and play it with the same settings I get average 25 fps with drops to 15 when the bullets start flying.

I've updated drivers, no dice. Its a brand new install of XP with a good sized partition, I'm only running the bare minimum of processes in the background and still it stutters. I have to play it on the "recommended settings" (800x600, all the fun stuff turned off) to even average close to 50FPS.

If anyone's got some recommendations I'd love to hear them, I've tried everything I can think of and the game still looks like crap.

System: 2.5ghz 15" MBP, 3 gigs of ram, 8600M GT w/ 512MB vram, 250gb 5400RPM HD, cod4 is installed on a 60gb windows XP SP2 partition. I'm currently running 167.44 WinXP32 drivers but I'm gonna switch back to the official drivers because nothing seems to fix the problem.

How would you know what driver to download on that site for the 8600gt M?

Never mind I just noticed they haven't updated their XP drivers in a long time

try this:
http://www.laptopvideo2go.com/nvidia/170series/17431.exe

That should work perfectly with your 8600M GT, if performance still is deficient, you could always try RivaTuner and try overclocking your videocard, that laptopvideo2go site has a great forum on overclocking that show stable speeds for the 8600M, choose one of the safer ones and test for stability and you'll be golden. With the kind of OCs I saw on that site and those drivers, Call of Duty 4 will run leaps and leaps better.

Max FPS 30 on iMac 2.4Ghz and HD2600 ?

Hi,

I'm running CoD4 (v1.0) on my iMac (20-inch, 2.4Ghz, 2Gb, HD2600 XT 256Mb) with the settings on 2x AA, Medium-settings and a resolution of 1680x1050. I've updated the standaard bootcamp video drivers to Catalyst 8.2.

The max FPS I get is just round 30, but in action it goes down to 17-20. Any suggestions ? (besides turning down the resolution or turn off AA :) )

Thanks !

You should really turn of AA - this REALLY improves performance on low/mid-end graphics card. Besides, 2x AA is nearly unnoticable.

OK, well I just tried COD4 under Bootcamp (XP SP2) on my new 2.5 Penryn, 4GB RAM, 7200rpm HD, 512MB VRAM.

It doesn't run too well - it randomly stutters, sometimes terribly sometimes slightly but constantly, it's never ever smooth, even at fairly low resolutions. I've tried all settings, AA off, all resolutions etc., and I can't get it to ever be smooth. Other games are the same - Need for Speed Most Wanted, etc.

I've installed the latest 169.09 driver (inc. modded INF file) from laptopvideo2go.com.

Can anyone help?

That sucks, my laptop finally shipped (same model as yours, except I got the 250 5400rpm hd)

I seen people playing this and crysis with the older 256mb cards, how can this not play well? Are you using vista or XP?

I was looking for some good settings to test out.

What about UT3 / Team Fortress 2 / And the best COD4 settings you have?

I don't see how there can be a problem playing these games on this macbook pro?

Have you tried COD4 on your MBP yet?

I've just downloaded the "recommended" 171.23 driver and installed it anyway (with the modded INF file), but little improvement.

I'm using XP SP2, and I've just tried a variety of games, inc. Call of Duty 4 (demo). Call of Duty runs terribly - I HAVE to have it on the very bottom resolution (640*) for it to be playable, and even then it stutters fairly often. If I go up to 800*, the stuttering is a lot worse, not smooth at all. And 1200*/1600* are just terrible. AA is off, other settings just on their defaults.

Have you tried COD4 on your Penryn? If not, you can get the demo from gamespot...

no, it won't be here until thursday. I have the game for my desktop.

I do not see how you can have such bad frame rates?

This is a pretty high end machine, and with running xp, you should have no hang ups.

You do not have lots of stuff running do you?

I'm trying to transition to having only a laptop, i opted for the 512 video card to ensure I can play games every once in a while. what settings are you using?

Nope, nothing else running. My settings for COD4 are in my last post.

UT4 on the Mac runs fairly well, but not perfect - constantly (but only slightly) stuttering.

check these youtube videos,

This one uses a 128mb card (cod 4)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=61-NHMJyhJk

try his settings, and this guy's runs quite smooth (256 card with 4gb ram)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Mp9i986jO4I

He also has crysis and bioshock running on this macbook pro, and enemy territory quake wars.

Maybe try using his in game settings?

1440 x 900
4x aa
16x af
he is using high settings and gets average of 48 fps

let me know how this works out for you?

I'll try those settings - are they for COD4?

Well I tried it with those settings, and it's nowhere near as smooth as that video. It's almost playable, but does constantly stutter.

i also have a penryn MBP 2.5/512 w/4GB RAM 250HD and I play full versions of Crysis, COD4, HL2, Rome total war, Pirates!....they all run fine (except crysis hehe)

COD4 Max settings @ 1280x720, essentially HD 720p rez. Runs beautifully, the only slow down i've noticed is when bringing the gun sight up in multiplayer. Seems like it needs optimizing.

Crysis I run @ 900x600 @ high or medium settings depending on whether i want eye candy or to play the game ;P

just wanted to let you know, nothing is wrong with your MBP's hardware, you clearly have some sort of software issue.

Have you tried making a fresh install of XP SP2? Are you using the leopard boot camp drivers? Are they even installed ??

Interesting. Yeah, I've installed XP SP2 twice now. Boot camp drivers installed, and I've tried it with/without the laptopvideo2go driver...

Do you run games on a TV?

hey machspeed5, thats great

what video settings are you using?

are you running any special enhancements for the games?

Here's the weird thing- I just tried Medal of Honor Airborne, and it runs fairly well, even with most thing on/high, and at 1200* res. It's not perfect, very slight stuttering and imperfections, but it's very playable. It's also a newish game (aug 07) and is graphically fairly intensive, so I was surprised it handles this better...
