Yeah I have. I've tried 169.09, and 171.23 (I think) as that was recommended, and most games are stuttery as hell, COD4 in particular. I can't even play it at low res.

If you actually bought the game, contact support.
Otherwise your download is probably corrupt, or is poorly hacked.

Almost everybody, except for a few freak cases have great frame rates on MBP. In addition, Windows needs regular defrag, otherwise it slows down to a crawl.

It's not just COD that performs badly, other similar games do too. And my XP installation and volume were all of 5 minutes old when I tried the game initially and found it stuttered.

Hmm, wish I could get to the bottom of this...

So, I'm planning on having a Penryn MBP soon. Is the consensus that Vista runs COD4 better than XP?

NO. Just stay away from Vista, at least for now. Many (most) vendors are offering a free XP downgrade option with new machines, that should be enough proof there.

Vista is a nightmare, my colleague at work spent 2 hours on the phone with MS just to install the Vista SP1 (we are in IT).

As far as games go, Vista dropped the frame rate of Half-Life from 60-ish to 15, on the same machine (only example I have).

I run COD4 on XP Pro on an Intel iMac (CD2 / 2.33 / 2GHz memory), it is as smooth as glass.

I just REALLY hope the Steam CD key(Purchased CoD4 through Steam) will work with the retail Mac version... so I dont need to buy another copy of the game. I strongly doubt I'd do that if thats my only choice for playing it on mac. I rarely buy games, so not gonna go crazy and buy 2 of the same game.

i HIGHLY HIGHLY HIGHLY doubt that's gonna happen. When PC and mac versions are released by the same publisher, then you have a decent chance of the same CD key working with both versions.
However, with COD4, you have two separate publishers. Aspyr ported the mac version, and porting the game surely cost them a significant sum of money. The only way for them to profit is to sell THEIR version.
Even if you bought the PC version, you still need to pay Aspyr for the work they did

I know it sucks. If this wasn't the case, then i'd just buy the PC version now, but I'm gonna hold out and purchase the mac version when it comes out instead (assuming i can get decent performance with it).

Think about it in this situation:

Dont you think Mac players will be able to play on servers with people on windows? If they share the same servers, then I think its more likely for them to share the same CD key.

But if the CD key from windows really doesnt work on the Mac OS X version, it sucks.

All I can give as an example of game using same serial for both OS (Only example I can give, because its only game for both OS I own), is Battlefield 2142, same key on Mac OS X and Windows.
Can only hope CoD4 does the same.

Nope, that means nothing. The mac version of Halo and the PC version can play on the same servers, but I can tell you that I personally tried using my mac version's CD-KEY with the PC version... and it wouldn't accept it.

BF2142 meets the requirement that I cited - both the mac version and pc version are published by the same publisher... EA.
Also, 2142's mac version IS the pc version, except it's wrapped in a crappy emulation package. It's not a "true" port.

And again, just THINK about it. How would it NOT be in aspyr's best interest to use their OWN unique CD Keys. They make NO MONEY if you're not buying a cd key from them.

Just installed on 2.5Ghz MBP with 8600GT 512MB, and just 2GB RAM. Resolution set at 1440x900 , AA X2, everything else set to Normal. Gameplay runs smoothly just when it's loading ( where they show some MAP SCANNING ) it becomes a little bit sluggish.

Turn off AA - it kills performance on most cards, especially laptop versions.

If you have 10.5, pick up a copy of Win XP and COD4 for PC. I run this on my iMac, it's phenomenal. $30 for the game, $77 for Win XP Pro (I work for a school so I got a discount on Windoze). Cheapest option, COD4 runs wonderfully.

That said - we are starting to see a trend, which is games are moving away from the PC platform and moving toward the consoles. Why? The consoles are "known hardware configurations". MUCH easier and more efficient for game developers.

So in the end, if you are set on COD4 (and you should be!), either the 360 or WinXP on your Intel Mac. Not a huge Xbox fan personally, I'd prefer a PS3, but... no COD4. :(

I don't by Mac games any more. Just my personal choice. Why? Been burned too many times. The last / worst one was with ID and Quake 4. They essentially neutered MP on Quake 4 for Mac users, no apologies, no fix (at least as of v1.4). That was enough for me, Aspyr won't see any more of my cash.

hth,
craig

the consols lik ps3 are like super computers and the games are so good is they can put them on lik bluray and obsolite hd dvd

There's a guy on YouTube who's posted a lot of videos of different games on his MBP (SR Merom I think), and he's getting excellent performance from COD4 at 1440* with AA X2, shadows off, everything else normal. Seems like a genuine guy.

Search for Macbook Pro COD4, he's called KamikazeX1 I think.

Very annoying! I really wish I could get to the bottom of this.

I never run my resolution that high - as a trade off I bump it down and use AA - I think the image looks better that way.

But I'm open to trying other configs if anyone has any suggestions.

FWIW, I ran the COD4 demo on XP on my Santa Rosa MBP 2.2GHz with GeForce 8600M GT GPU, made sure graphics were set to native res, maxed out all other settings, except FSAA. Ran smoothly IMHO. Almost made me purchase the PC version because I want it NOW!! LOL.

Tried lower resolution, even with AA, the images are soft, somehow like camera out focus, dun like it that way ...

Saw that too ~ nice ~ But his game play .....:p:p:p

Thats because its not the native LCD screen resolution.

But you decide - either crisp image, or smooth performance.

wahhh? i have a 7900GS and i run it at 1680x1050 with 2x aa on. i have 2 gig of ram and an amd x2 4000+ OC'd to 2.5 per core. it runs fine. i play online all the time (Fresh_pr1nce is my sn) and i never have a problem. ;)

Unless you are running this at low textures, lighting and effects - then this is totally impossible. An x1900 BARELY plays this game at 1280x1024 with any type of AA on. I have a 1900xtx with a dual core 2.7ghz processor, 2GB RAM in XP and it will hover in the low 30's at 1280 maxed out. The 1900xtx is the faster version of your card, and quad core on your MacPro is certainly not going to make up the difference. And your MacPro or any other Mac is not some magical device. Call of Duty 4 taxes even the latest GPUs.

I have a 2.5Ghz 15" 8600M GT 512MB that I was getting terrible stuttering audio and video when playing COD4 under XP. I updated to some newer graphics drivers from laptopvideo2go.com (the 169.09 i believe), and everything started working just fine. The audio is fine, and the video is fine. I am playing at native res, with AA turned off, and everything else a the normal settings (though i didn't play around too much with the settings yet). It is definitely playable, with some minor slow downs that I can live with. I don't know how to check my FPS yet, but will figure it out.

anybody tried cod 4 on vista bootcamp on a macbook pro 2,4 ghz 256mbvram with 4gb ram, 15"? If yes how was the performance? I'm going vista.. tks

has anybody actually tried to run COD4 on MacBook instead of just being pessimistic and saying that it will not work. I know PC's Play COD 4 with X3100, yes, the frame rates are low, but hey its COD4 with out having to spend an extra $1000 on a computer w/ a graphics card. I would prefer if someone would test it with this:
2.4 GHz MB
4GB ram
intel X3100
with XP Professional:apple:

I have the exact same setup and play it on Windows XP. The game works fine on there..with online multiplayer fps between 45-75 depending on the server.

Hmmmm, thats interesting b/c its sunday MAY 25 and there is not even a mention of COD4 on Aspyr's site.

EDIT: sorry my search in Aspyr just did not show COD4 for mac you have to go to the "Comming Soon" tab as a search in the search bar will turn up nothing.

they changed the release date to "summer '08" earlier this month.

See, I'm not as angry about it as you because I never actually expected them to release it in May :D

It could still end up being the LAST day of summer... or even later - who knows.

Aspyr generally makes decent ports, but I don't really like the way they run their business. They never give us any info about upcoming ports besides announcing that they're "working on it."

If they actually bothered to say something like "we're terribly sorry, but we can't finish coding the game until apple fixes [insert something here] in the next system update" i'd feel a lot better.

I know that there's a lot of risk when you announce release dates... which is why Blizzard never actually tells you what date they're gonna release a patch - because if they miss that date then all hell breaks loose.

But come on... tell us SOMETHING Aspyr.

but they won't

Amazon say they will ship on July 16th This year... Ive pre-ordered....

For now Ill have to stay with the PC version running on Vista64 (btw without any problems at full res) :)
