I started collecting iPods as a hobby. I bought many of them as soon as they were released by apple but obtained some of the older ones on ebay. Itried to stay away from refurbs and only purchase iPods with the retail packaging (although I did purchase a couple refurbs directly from apple).

I won't be passing them on to any family members. My fear is that the batteries will eventually start to eat them away many years down the road. I've actually consolidated and sold off a portion of my collection over the past few months. Im getting married this year along with potentially buying a house so I need all the funds I can get.

Although I do still have my sealed original First Generation. That one I will be hanging onto for a while or at least until I get a very nice $$$$ offer for it.

I think that you are selling off your collection for some very good reasons :D

I have heard very little of this "battery eating the internals of the ipod" thing that people have been talking... Is that something that effects iPods more than any other gadget or is it the same as all battery powered gadgets?

I began my collection whenever I was working far too much over-time and had some excess funds to spend (in addition to all the money I was investing).

My thought behind it was that this device along with the iTunes store really revolutionized the music industry. I plan to make a museum like display for my office one day. I doubt there will be any financial gain from collecting iPods. With the exception of perhaps the first one. I do try to keep my iPods in good working order by power cycling the batteries now and again. Unfortunately like all battery powered devices they will one day fail to work.

My first iPod was a third gen and I didn't replace that until the first gen iPod touch. So all of the other iPods I have purchased from eBay or forum sites. I've been very particular and only purchased iPods with all of the retail packaging and none (save for a 2nd gen shuffle) were refurbished. I was fortunate and found all of the 5th gens sealed. Since then I've purchased the old iPod as the new ones have been coming out.

Everyone has pretty much said the advice I have given to others over the past. The only thing I will say is that I avoid using the Ice Creme "recovery pad" or whatever it is they call the fine grit sand-paper they send you unless the device is significantly beat up. I do my best to avoid that when purchasing iPods in the first place.

Hi all,

I've been meaning to post some pics of my collection for a while and finally got round to taking some today. At it's biggest I had about 19 but I decided to get rid of some of the duplicates so it now sits at 16 (The 4th Gen Nano is my brothers). The only iPod's that I would really like to add to my collection is the 5th Gen Video, U2 edition and a 1st Gen iPod Touch but I can't bring myself to spend the money lol.
I think i've got all of the accessories for the 1st Gen Shuffle, but if anyone can think of anymore please say. Cheers.

That looks awesome!

I have a sealed first generation iPod touch and a very mint 5th gen video (with invisible shield) with box that I would be willing to sell. I'm slowly getting rid of my collection as stated above.

Wow that is really nice ClassicTom! How long have you been collecting them?

Thanks, i've been collecting them for about 2 years.
If anyone wants any tips on starting a collection. What I do is go on eBay and under the section Mp3 players - Apple. I select only buy it now listings and switch it to newly listed and then add the page to favourites. I then check the top few pages everyday to try and pick the best bargains before anyone else sees them. So far it's worked pretty well.

Thanks for the offer MattyMac but i'm in the process of buying a flat at the moment so my collection is going to grind to a holt for a while :(

I never wanted to collect the boxes and everything that came with the iPods, but now I do...

I just got my first iPod in my collection with the box and everything it is a 1GB Nano! I got it on CL for $15! I am also picking up a 2nd Generation iPod that was plugged in once and then put back in its box and in the closet (it didn't work with their PC) for $15 on Thursday!

You've tapped into a goldmine clist market! iPods for $15?? Nice find; I think I'm going to start checking my clist market for iPods

Great start to a promising collection!

Yeah I buy and sell on CL all the time! I got my silver mini for $2 from someone that thought it was broken (it just needed to be reset), I got all three of my 20gb 4th Gen iPods together for $5 and two of them worked and one didn't! The 5th Gen with a bad hard drive for $5, and the Green mini for $10!! I just bought a second generation iPod for $10... It was supposed to have the box and everything for $15 but she could only find the ipod, headphones, charger cable, and the charger block! Plus the screen is a little scratched up! Ended up that her son had used it for awhile back in high school so it is a little beat up but oh well!

I'm jealous! That's a sweet 2nd gen and as time passes, they'll be harder to find. You should buy some stands from Mattymac :D
