Hello! I am new to this forum. Great to see so many fellow iPod collectors out there.

I've been addicted to iPods for several years now, and I have over 20 in my collection (will post details and pics later).

But I had a quick question:

How important is it that iPods in a collection are sealed (original, unopened factory seal right off the store shelf)?

I know most people collect for the pleasure and love of the gadget, but after seeing some of these collections, I wondered if they have to be sealed to have any real value.

Just throwing it out there.

It all depends on what you want to do with your collection! I personally just want to have them on display and could really care less if they are sealed or not! I have recently been looking to find iPods that still have all of their original packaging but they don't have to be sealed! As far as value goes, if you plan on selling them for a bunch of money, the only way that is going to happen is if they are all in the factory seal! But to me my ipods have a high high value because they are mine, not because that is what someone would pay for them!

P.S. - Now post some pics!!

Not in it for the value

For me its not important to have them sealed. I want to use and play with them, and having one in the original packaging, would kill me:rolleyes:

The important thing for me is to have the original packaging, and the ipod in quite decent condition (and try to avoid refurbs).

And I intend to use these classics, depending on my mood:cool:

When the battery goes bad, Ill just change them.

If you want to make money on your collection, I guess you can get them sealed, but if youre passionate about the ipods, its better without:)

Welcome to the Forum! You ask excellent questions. There are definitely people out there who would want to purchase a sealed iPod.

However, must of us use the iPods and, therefore, keeping them sealed has no value. I use all of mine; especially my 120GB classic :D

can't wait for the pics!

How much have you been spending on the sealed iPods? I'm intrigued by the idea of starting a collection of sealed iPods, too.

Amazing! But why the box of the iPod 5G is cut? Your iPod touch is sealed?!?

Received my iPod color and iPod 4G brand new:

My brand new iPod 4G 20Gb 2004. I will not open it!

Actually, searching an iPod 5G brand new! :)

The 5th Gen iPod box is cut because I had to send the UPC to apple as part of their back to school promo. I got the iPod at a discounted price when I bought a mac.

Yes, my iPod touch is still sealed...I'm willing to sell it if you are interested in that.

I also have a brand new 1st Gen 5gb iPod never opened! Here are pictures of it in this thread. The iPod itself or any of the accessories have never been opened. I even have the original brown shipping box from apple.

Okay! At the moment, i stop to buy iPod! I have buy the classic 8G, iPod 4G and iPod photo in 2 weeks!:D

Not interested by the iPod touch 1G because I have one in really really good condition, but thaks for the proposition!;)
I'm searching for a iPod 3G and 5G now. Not really by 1G and 2G because they have not a dock connector even they cost a lot.

PS: What's your price for the 1G?

The price for my 1G would be very high!! I doubt you would pay that.

I could sell you my 5G for $100 and possibly my 3G which was never used.

I have seen an iPod 1G sealed on eBay. It was an auction, sold for 800$. That is the 3G and 5G are brand new? What's your price for the 1G?

Id like more info on the 3g.
I'd like to keep my 1G for now. Honestly I wouldn't accept less than a couple thousand. Some may think I'm crazy but I think this will be worth quite a bit one day. Maybe even now. Honestly if I saw one on ebay now for $800 I would probably consider buying it myself.

The iPod 5G was used a few times but kept in an invisible shied throughout it's life. All the accessories are still sealed as well and the iPod is MINT beneath the shield which I can peel off easily.

The iPod 3G was only taken out of the packaging and synced etc. Never really used per say. However, the box on the 3G has tears at the spine and isn't in very good shape. The iPod itself is MINT. It's 10gb and also has the accessories sealed including the firewire cable, 6pin to 4 pin adaptor, earbuds, and the ac adaptor.

Refurbs or not?

Hi Psycomanique,
Do you check serialnumbers for your ipods, to check whether they are refurbs, or do you not care?

I know I would be suspicious buying a "new" ipod from hong kong:cool:

If second digit is a "Q" it is probably a refurb.

I try to avoid refurbs, but its not easy, as they are everywhere..

They are not refurb because it's the original boxes...

I have even the box of expediting from Apple with the date: 24 august 2004.

Not refurb. ;)

That may not be a guarantee, as refurbs often comes with complete original box.

I just thought it looked like the serialno on your 4th gen started with JQ, but picture is quite blurry.. so im probably wrong..

Woww it's a news for me! I think buy a brand new but they are refurb??? I don't have the serial number with me but when I have look on the site Apple, there is not write that they were refurb.

But many of iPod are refurb even sealed?!? The boxes of actually refurbish iPod are special...

Refurbed ipods are almost always sealed, and appear to be new, as they get new back plate etc.

Most sealed new ipods I've seen on ebay are refurbs, but many are for real as well.

Best tip:
Second digit: Q --> refurb
(third digit indicates actual year of manufacture, aka JQ522XXXXX is a refurb ipod from 2005 week 22)
Always check the serialnumber!

And what's the problem if they are refurb-new with accessories brand new, original box. It's just for a serial number?!? It's just crazy...

refurbs

Its no problem with a refurb, they can actually work better than the original as all the kinks probably are fixed, but they can be many years newer then the original etc.

For a collector, it could also mean a big difference, as a refurb is probably less worth than a non-refurb.

But in the end, it is definitely up to the collector. I buy used iPods, and always check, to avoid buying a refurb.

If I have buy refurb, I will be desappointed because I don't know that an iPod with original box can be refurb... I thought that refurb had special box as now... :(

I think that it's a Q on the box. A refurb... But I don't understand, it was order 24 august 2004
