You are OK

As long as the box serial number matches the iPod serial number you are OK.

I think iPodCollector was referring to the actual iPod unit being sealed. The iPod refurbs (units) always come sealed and look brand new, but they never come with the actual retail boxes (like yours). They usually come with a brown or white generic apple box.

In short it looks like you are ok to me!

Enjoy your LEGIT collection!

Refurb or not

I did some research (read: google) to find claims for what Im telling. I remember reading it last year, but cant find the exact forum. I have however found 2 sites where this is mentioned. (the "Q" in the beginning of the serial)

Link
Read a little down, and someone mentions it.

Link iLounge
Also mentions the q in the beginning of the serial.

I dont mean to be a wise guy, I might be wrong, but I have read this several places earlier. Klantenservice is not always precise, regarding refurbs.

However, you do have a very nice ipod, but I thought you should know..

I just purchased a sealed (just the iPod, no box or accessories) 1st gen 10GB iPod. The copy right date on the back states 2002, however, apple.com shows the october 2001 date when I enter the serial number.

Did Apple release 1st gen iPods with "2002" as a copy right date?

Like all of you, I want to make sure I have a legit first gen iPod!

Thanks!

Habitus :apple:

Genuine..

Hi Habitus,
A genuine 1st gen 10GB ipod has mechanical scroll wheel, and the serialnumber would typically be U2215XXXXXX (2002 model, week 15)

4th and 5th digit should be less than 25 to prove its a geniune 1st gen iPod.

On the Apple site, it just mentions the generation, which was launched in october 2001:rolleyes:

I see, so if the Apple site mentions the October 2001 date when you enter your serial number, that's referring to the generation (in my case, 1st generation?)?

Serialno

Yes,

Sorry man,
Thats definitely a refurb. Your ipod was produced in 2006! Its a first generation, but sold 4 years later as new! Your ipod is only 3.5 years old.

That's shocking!

If this is the case, then why does it show up on the Apple site as a legitimate 1st gen iPod?

If klantenservice tell that this iPod is a refurb, it didn't for my 4G. Finally, the Q doesn't always mean that is a refurb?!?

So you're saying that the website iPodcollector used may not be accurate?

Habitus :apple:

Well,
Apple will offcourse state that this is a first gen iPod, which it is, it just was produced much later as a refurb. (make no doubt Habitus, yours is a 1st gen, but it is a refurb produced in 2006).

Whether its a proper 1st gen depends on the collector:)

I think proper 1st gens was produced between october 2001, and june 2002.

Below, you can see pictures of a refurb I accidentally bought. The b/w clickwheel ipod was never sold in this kinda box (it should have been similar to yours Psykomanique), but this is a refurb produced later. Serialnumber is JQ etc.

Sorry mates.. Im pretty sure the Q means refurb, but you can offcourse decide yourself, or prove me wrong:rolleyes:

iPodcollector,

Thanks for the heads-up. I guess I'm glad that this is a 1st gen, but pretty upset that it's a refurb.

So, Apple manufactured the 1st gen I have, but it was produced as a refurbished iPod? If that's the case, why would the copyright date on the back say 2002?

Sorry for all the questions, but you're pretty knowledgeable on iPods, iPodcollector!

Habitus :apple:

iPodcollector, for me your iPod is not a refurb! Why do you think it is a refurb?

Im not gonna say Im 100% sure, but I dont think klantenservice is always right.

This is what klantenservice says about my 4th gen iPod (which I know is a refurb, as it was produced after the iPod color was introduced (which actually replaced it!)). Ref wikipedia, and everyipod.com

Serial number: JQ5351RQPS9 (cleaned up from 'JQ5351rqps9')

But seriously guys, I could be wrong, I dont know! But several sites mention this Q in the beginning of the serialnumber.

Do some research, and prove me wrong:rolleyes: I wouldnt mind..

Well, to give more heads-up, you can consider your ipod quite rare, as this was produced in very moderate numbers (read this). I guess only a couple of thousand of these surfaced.

Cheers:cool:

Any idea why the copyright date on the back states 2002? Does Apple print the original date of the iPod on refurbished models despite being produced after the date?

Habitus :apple:

Habitus,
Your ipod was released in 2002 (the 10gb 1st gen was introduced in march, read wikipedia!), hence is it marked with 2002.

The 4th gen I have which is manufactured in 2005, is marked also with 2004, as the b/w model was introduced then. That date does not mean anything with regards to how old the ipod is!

The serialnumber is the best way to know for sure.

My iPod 4G:

Serial number: JQ433RGPPS9

Was introduced in 2004
Was product in 2004

I don't understand anything... I think that the most important is the number and not the letters JQ

My classic have K9 and it's new! I remember that K signified refurb for the iPhone... It's not possible that my classic is refurb...

iPodcollector,

Thanks for the info. I found the date odd, especially given that the iPod was supposedly produced in 2006!

Thanks for all the info.
