I'm a serious buyer. If I see a product I need, I will buy it. As long as I see the price is fit from my perspective. I bought a sealed U2 iPod for $600, so I figure $650 is a reasonable price for this iPod. As for the sealed 1st gen ipod, I'm willing to negotiate up to a certain point.

Given your impressive collection, I believe you are indeed a serious buyer.

The $1,400 you proposed is only for a 1G with the box opened and only the iPod itself sealed, right? Technically, I do not consider that a "sealed" iPod. Factory sealed means that the entire box must be sealed, exactly how one would find it at the retail store shelf - brand new, untouched...

Now, I wonder how much would you pay for a completely sealed 1G (if you could find one)? Your price quote above reminds of the saying that collectibles are only worth what the next collector is willing to pay.

I don't know how many truly factory-sealed 1Gs there are in the world, but I suspect that one would be worth several thousand dollars...No?

Let's hear what everyone thinks: How Much Is a Factory Sealed 1G worth?

Yes, the 1G iPod I offered $1400 for has everything on the inside in original packaging (iPod, FireWire, EarPhones, etc.). As for the completely sealed 1G iPod, I would pay approx. $3000 or more, depending on the situation. I would only buy an item like that in two situations: face-to-face transaction or public auction (eBay). Personally, I would fly to meet someone who wanted to sell it face-to-face.:) I've only seen one on the internet and it wasn't for sale!!!

I would be willing to sell you my sealed 1st Gen. All components sealed on the inside. I even have the original shipping box with matching serial number on the brown box! There is no cellophane around the box. Honestly I don't think the first gens ever came with a seal around the box as ALANDRAFTS was mentioning. This would need to be confirmed somewhere however. PM me for details.

Nope, the 1G iPods were definitely sold in factory sealed boxes (it wouldn't make sense otherwise, since the gray inside box would be fall out of the white slip cover).

Here is proof from the iLounge, who seem to have a sealed one:

Wow, paying that much for a sealed 1G, you must be a serious collector! Hopefully once you've got the whole set, you could delight us all with some pictures! It'll certainly be quite a collection. As for myself, I currently have:

1G iPod
3G iPod 20GB
1G iPod nano 2GB
iPhone 3GS 16GB

(all boxed)

The next one I want is the 2G. After that, iPods from 4G onwards are pretty easy to find. I'm not bothered about how used they are, as long as they're all boxed.

Just found this thread, very impressive stuff... it's good to find myself in the company of other like-minded Apple Nerds. :)

My iPod collection is not terribly impressive... although I do have some decent ones. My favorite prize is my first-gen iPhone, the 4GB model... I have an immaculate one, with the original box and all the goodies still inside. I see the O.P. also has a very nice first gen iPhone in his very VERY nice collection on the first page. I will photograph my rag-tag little collection tonight just for shiggles. :D

My iPods include:

10GB M8737LL/A... it's the one that looks like the first ever but is actually from 2002

2x 500MB 1st gen iPod Shuffle

3x 20GB June 2005 (M9282LL/A)... they're all sick though. Broken screen, bad hard drive, bad logic board... I'm planning on breaking them down and see how many good ones I can piece together some day. :)

And I've got 4 iPod Touches, various gens and states of functionality.

Like another poster, I've given away several of my iPods to kiddies and family members who have admired (or pretended to admire) my Apple hoard... errr, "collections"

You guys have got me curious, so I'm going to go dig up my boxed 1G and have a look. I really don't recall this shipping in a sealed box. Everything inside was sealed and the outer box/cover was rather snug - I think this just might have been how it shipped. I will tell you that having worked at a major toy retailer in my youth, it is extremely EASY to shrinkwrap a box. Frankly, I'd feel a lot more comfortable seeing everything sealed inside than getting a box that may or may not have the original wrap and thus may or may not actually have anything of value inside. Hate to be a cynic, but people know a collector won't break that seal. So they'd never see what was really inside. Anyway, I'll find the iPod and try to post some pics.

The Picture of My Dreams: Stack of Sealed 1G iPods

Hey guys,

I found these photos on Flickr:

http://www.flickr.com/photos/epytwen/429919201/in/set-72157600015008269/

It looks like these were taken on (or about) the launch date for the original 1G iPod back in the fall of 2001.

It shows a stack of SEALED 1G iPods ready for sale at the Apple Store. Look closely and you'll see the price sticker on the shiny factory seal.

Notice how there was no crazy line of people wanting to buy them like they did for the iPhone and iPad. iPods had a relatively "quiet" launch, focused mainly on Apple hardcore fans.

If my recollection is correct, Apple only sold over 350,000 iPods in the entire first year, which is what makes these 1Gs so rare (and collectible).

If I had a "Hot Tub Time Machine," I'd go back to Oct 2001 and buy all of these sealed 1Gs and keep them unopened! Ha!

Update my collection:

Holy incredible collection Pskymagique... Very very impressive!

I have a question for you and the other "big collectors"... how do others react when they see your collection? Particularly the opposite sex? My collection of  stuff seems to serve as a highly powerful girl repellent... so I usually don't show my dates "the closet" until we've had at least a few good dates first. :D

I don't know if I am considered a "big collector" but I usually get the "oh wow that is so cool" from the guys and the "why do you need that many iPods?" from the girls... but I am happily married so I don't really care what the girls say! :D (yes she is looking over my shoulder!) But most people usually think that it is pretty awesome!

Also here is an update on my collection....

missing is a first generation shuffle (512mb) and I have another shuffle coming in a few days!

No Psykomaniaque I only have the boxes for the 1st gen. Nano, 2nd gen. iPod Touch, and iPhone 3g. Is that what is left of your collection or are those just your new ones?

Nevermind I see the pictures you posted above mine! You have a few very nice collection!

Don't know if I've said this earlier on in the thread, but I really, really want to get my hands on one of those limited edition Harry Potter iPods from 2005ish. That would be jackpot for me!

Very sorry, I don't understand. I'm french and sometime, I don't understand some sentences.

All my iPod are in condition NEW. Some iPod were opened juste to see them, all accesories are new. The iPod who I have really used them are: the iPod touch 1G, the nano 5G and the iPhone 3Gs. Two of my iPod 4G, my iPod 3G, my nano 4G black and one shuffle 3G stainless edition are sealed. I don't konw if it's the answer at your question...:D

Now, I must look for the iPod nano 1st, 2nd, 3rd, iPod mini 1st or 2nd brand new.

Harry Potter is UK, you are UK, you MUST find this iPod!:D

I know! Although it was sold in the US as well, and they like Harry Potter over there too, so I'm sure there'll be a few lying around in people's drawers! Getting a Harry Potter iPod would be amazing for me, I love Harry Potter haha.

Well thank you but I think you quoted the wrong person! You might have meant Psykomaniaque because he does have an extremely nice collection! You have quite the collection yourself! I actually have two of the shuffles, what I meant that the shuffle was missing from the photo! What I do need is the iPhone 2g, and a first generation ipod touch!!

Are you looking to get it new? If not, I will be happy to keep my eyes open for you!

No, doesn't have to be new! To be honest, there's probably not a new Harry Potter in the wild anywhere in the whole world! Thanks for your help.

It could be that the 1st gens that sold in stores had the cellophane and the ones that shipped had no cellophane...
