It will elevate mobile photography to the level Samsung did like a year or two ago. I love my iPhone but my boss and I have a friendly rivalry with his Samsung S20. I usually don’t mind but he can casually take pictures that look way better than my iPhone.

After the night he casually just looked up and took a fantastic picture of the moon, that I spent the next five minutes trying to get even close, yeah Apple has some work to do.

If your main objective is to take pictures of yourself though, iPhone nails it. I guess they know their market.

Ctrl+F “Optical” or “Zoom” on this page brought up nothing.

You know Apple can’t just call it optical zoom. They’re gonna have to come up with a proper adjective (is that a thing?), like Super Sight or something.

Literally why does this matter? In what way could someone being able to take a photo on your iPhone harm you? Non issue

Are you serious? You don’t see an issue with a tech firm that positions itself as the paragon of security and privacy allowing literally anyone on the planet access to your camera to do with as they see fit? For pranksters to fill your storage with 4K video or bad actors to take unsolicited pictures that are then uploaded to your iCloud account? By all means don’t care but please let’s not pretend it ‘literally’ doesn’t matter.

I’d settle for any camera that isn’t permanently accessible from the lock screen by those without login credentials. Yes it’s a tenuous link to the article but I’ll mention it at any possible opportunity since Apple’s total silence on this issue is becoming highly suspicious.

I also think being able to swipe away notifications without unlocking is a potential security issue as well. Would be very simple to just add this to the list of toggles.

In any case it does actually appear there’s a workaround in screen time…

Yes, this combined with CSAM scanning could make for a very bad time if someone was targeted by a very bad person.

While I appreciate the expected camera upgrades I am a little bummed with the rumored color choices for the 14 Pro. Not digging the purple and the other options are so bland. Why can't the Pro models get the same color choices as the regular iPhones?

Apple can only polish a turd so much. The camera is awful, in my opinion, compared to competitors. It is disappointing to see this. But 48mp will be welcomed.
The iPhone camera is still one of the best out there. Granted HDR and shadows aren’t good but for point and shoot, video and macro it’s the best. Where the 48mp helps will be with great detail for stills. pixel binning is a must these days and why the competition takes still good stills hopefully adding this with apples software should make it the next for overall stills. Time will tell

what iPhone do you have? My experience with the camera on my 13PM is the opposite ...
and what exactly are you expecting from 48MP other than 8k?

As a photographer who’s iPhone has now replaced their main camera(especially for travel), I will finally be upgrading my iPhone 11 Pro Max to the iPhone 14 Pro Max. Looking forward to all the improvements like the 48 megapixel wide lens, the larger sensors, the 7 element tele lens & the 8k video recording. The rumored telescoping tele lens of the iPhone 15 would have been nice too. But all the other advances of the iPhone 14 Pro Max over my 11 Pro Max make it a worthy upgrade. I just love the convenience of having such a powerful & versatile camera always in my pocket. It has changed my photography for the better.

I may be in the minority, but as an artist who travels with his iPad Pro for drawing, I wish you could use the Apple Pencil on the iPhone 14 Pro as well. Not a biggie, but would enjoy the ability to make quick sketches on my iphone in a pinch. Also wish the iPhone 14 Pro was getting USB-C. That would be one less cable to pack. But it looks like lightning is here to stay for awhile on the iPhones. You really can’t complain tho. It’s truly amazing just how much creative tech Apple packs into these small devices.
This!

I’m quietly hoping that Pencil support is coming to the Pro line. If not this round, maybe the next?

When Steve made his now famous comments about still at the first iPhone keynote, screens were too small - yes, even that first all-screen iPhone. But now, these things are basically Fields Notes-sized (and larger). Adding Pencil support, for those so inclined, would be a welcome option. Plus, Steve was the sales guys. He said lots of stuff to suit the moment. Combine that with a cosmic ability to seemingly manifest that which he said, it’s why he is still talked about to this day.

That said, I suppose if Pencil support were coming (I know, I know, zero rumors), I would suspect one of the freakishly observant beta kids would have found something in the code. I can’t recall… Has Apple ever had an iOS feature “unlocked” by some hardware aspects of a new iPhone that, until released, was hidden within iOS? I know I’m reaching. But having used Lemcil 2 on an iPad mini 6, the potential this would bring to iPhone would be worthy and a nice differentiator for the Pro line.

I have reached a point where the camera improvements are not even noticeable anymore. I just want a flat-back iPhone, without a camera bump. That way I can finally use it without a case and it would still be flat on the desk. Early rumors of iPhone 14 hinted that design and I was so looking forward to it. Alas! The wait continue..
So agree and disagree at same time. The cameras for a few years now have been “great” enough, true.

But: I had 13 mini for like six months, and recently bought a used 11pro, and the pictures while stellar on the 11pro, the 13mini is noticeably better on picture quality.

12 megapixels are already a lot for such a tiny sensor. Image quality does not really get better whith 48 or even 108 megapixels. I own a full frame camera and I opted for a low resolution one because of the advantages of large pixels. It is a bad trend to give cameras 48 megapixels just to make 8K and a higher digital zoom possible.

Especially videos at night suffer a lot from a high resolution. The video centric full frame camera from Sony is the A7S III with just 12 megapixels. Those 12 megapixels are perfect for high videoquality at 4K.

You can’t compare the full-frame sensor of the Sony to the tiny mobile one. It literally has very little to do with megapixels here. It’s all about the sensor size that gives you so much detail and so little noise. I own a Sony a7III.

Just one year away till periscope lens makes its way to the iPhone 15. That will be the ultimate game changer!
Yeah, let’s hope that, with the periscope lenses and the USB-C connector comes a redesign of the iPhone with a much lighter titanium body.

One of the turn-offs for me about the current iPhone pro lineup is the excessive weight of the device.

The solution in post #28 disables the camera completely on the iPhone. Not a great solution. No other options are on offer, though.

The iPhone 14 Pro Max will need the two TB storage option for the ever increasing image sizes and movie sizes. The image sizes are going to require the USB-C connection so images can ALL be downloaded the same day.....

Imagine them releasing 8k capable iPhone with lightning usb 2.0. Surely not…

14 megapixels is ancient, there are phones with 60-70 mp cameras now that cost half as much, why aren’t Apple targeting a photography market and having mirror less lenses on their phones.
Megapixels are largely a huge waste of time/space when you consider the vast majority of images are consumed on mobile devices with far less MP. The only benefit of them, and it's fairly limited, is if you aren't able or too lazy to get closer to a subject to fill the frame.

As an artist it would be nice to have a device where I can take ultra high quality photos from something like a phone instead of paying a fortune for a dslr, plus the more megapixels the larger images I can produce

The SE 3 really does take amazing photos. Always impressed with it. I would rock it if had at least one more lense (ultra wide or telephoto).
Yeah, having three lenses is good although it does make the phone a bit top heavy. The very heavy processing in all these images from all the smartphone makers makes up for a lot of shortcomings in the process.

Is it true that the camera on iPhone XR is the main camera from iPhone X, that the cameras on iPhone 11 are the cameras from iPhone XS Max, that the cameras on iPhone 12/12 mini are 2 of the cameras from iPhone 11 Pro Max [except telephoto], that the cameras on iPhone 13/13 mini are 2 of the cameras from iPhone 12 Pro Max [except telephoto]?

If that's how it is, if you want flagship camera for a lower price, then get the base/non-Pro model, I guess? Although it will be from the previous release and not the latest and greatest...
Except if you want telephoto you HAVE to get Pro.

Megapixels are not really an indicator of quality, despite the marketing. The main reason why marketing focuses (pun intended) so much on these numbers is because they're easily comparable and understood by people. The actual benefits of a DSLR/mirrorless camera have nothing to do with megapixels (within reason) but everything to do with sensor area and lenses. The simple physics is that larger sensors capture more light and thus end up with higher quality captures. Add in that the lenses for those cameras are far better, by orders of magnitude, than phone lenses just enhances the quality difference.

Even so, when the majority of images are resized/viewed at 2MP size what does it really matter?

don’t buy the 14! Wait till next year!!

Haha 😆
My wife’s phone is due for upgrade now. Trying to weigh up getting a cheap 13pro contract vs the 14 (sounds like the 14pro will be too expensive for us especially at launch).

Sounds like the cameras in both phones will be similar, apart from the 13 pro with a telephoto and the upgraded front camera on the 14th. Weighing towards the 13pro currently
You just gotta wait one month for the inevitable deals on the 14 pro on contract.

I wouldn’t get a 13pro unless it’s free on trade in on a three year contract.

People aren’t excited for more MP alone it’s s about the massive sensor size and the importance of pixel binning

Thanks for that. What a ridiculously hidden workaround that is. I don’t use screen time so have never seen that.

ETA: wait…that actually disables the camera entirely…
Wow, that is incredibly dumb. I wanted to stop the swipe to the camera from the Lock Screen because I often do it unintentionally. But to remove the camera completely? Don’t understand that decision.

It sounds like nighttime photography will get a tad worse with the 14. I am still waiting for an astronomy mode for great night time photos with less blooming of the moon and such. It doesn’t sound like that is happening anytime soon.

And with all the upgrades to photos and videos, why do they all still look like crap on my Apple TV 4K? Apple needs to do something about that, imho.
