For me it isn't so much about performance (of course the performance will be there when it gets updated), but more about value for my money. Which I don't think the Mac Pro is right now. I prefer to buy on the beginning of the update cycle. The Mac Pro, as I am sure you know, is the same as it was a year ago. That, for me, does not represent a value. And with the things that are here (Clovertown and GPUs) and the things that are coming (Harpertown and SS) I can't imagine buying one now.

And I am not about to play the buy it now and resell it game.

Yea, but what sucks is we don't know when it's going to be updated. With the Paris Expo history, it looks like they might just talk about ipods, hopefully thats not the case, but who knows. Then you got October with Leopard. Then the only other month for an update is November. If these new Harpertown and SS boards are coming by then, wouldn't they have to test and re test them over and over so there are no bugs or glitches, then take them to the product line? I would think a major update in January now.

Yes an announcement is possible, but I would think the shipping would be next year.

I did that with the iMac for 2 years and I'm very tire of it.

I'm tempted just to get an iMac and suck it up but I can't keep reselling my computer every year.

I'll wait until Leopard but I've just put so much time and money into OS X. I like to game to but I'm effectively trapped getting a Mac Pro in order to get some longevity.

A $700 machine I build myself sounds so tempting everyday.

I don't know how much longer I can wait. My mouse is hovering over "add to cart" on the Apple site. Is it really worth waiting to save me 10 minutes on renders in Final Cut?

Don't be such a pansy! Put it in the cart, enter your credit card info and hover over the "submit" button like a real man. (but of course don't push it) I can't count how many times I've had one of the two (the cheaper one) refurb dual 3.0's currently offered in such a position.

Harpertown and SS are due by the end of the 4th quarter (September). They would have a few months to test. Of course, I don't know, hell they could have them now. Intel hasn't even released the 3.0Ghz Clovertown but Apple got them and tested and released in April.

And, these don't require the amount of testing that notebooks and the other products call for. Towers machines are easy to do. They have a rock solid chassis. Basically, it won't take as long as you think it will.

I love buying stuff and selling it. But this machine will be around for a LONG TIME. I am sick of switching Macs at least 4 times a year (my choice of course). This Mac Pro will be around for years and thus I wait for the update.

What is considered end of 4th Quarter? 1st of September or September 30th? If it's then end of September, I would expect a MacPro update in November or January. If its the 1st of September, I could see it possibly shipping with Leopard.

Um. End I believe. That is not to say they aren't available now. They are just due in Q4.

For what it's worth, both AMD and Intel have some big announcements on September 10th. Read it on the Inq. They were saying how it was going to be a pain for journalists to be in two places at once.

So,

Harpertown 4th Quarter (Sept.) + Intel announcement September 10 = ........................... Mac Pro forsaken yet again!!! LOL

Thanks 4 the backup with the link Eidorian :)

Ok, I can't wait til November. This is ridiculous. I don't know what to do. We have the MacPros at work and they are just awesome. Windows works so fantastic on the machine and I'm dying to play my old games again.

I think I am just gonna get the 3ghz Octo-Core. I agree its wayyyyyyyyyy over priced, but for what I am doing with it, I could have it paid off fairly quickly. I mean, christ, I was thinking about getting a laptop to, so that could substitute that idea. ... That and I will have and Octo Core just like everyone else when the time comes, only you all will pay half of what I paid. lol.

Is it too much to ask Apple to update the friggin' video cards already??? This is ridiculous. Totally unsat. Those cards are more than a year and a half old now, aren't DX10 compliant, and the BTO CPU options don't jive with Intel's new pricing. (Of course, their hard drives and RAM are the same way).

Q4 Means By December 31st NOT September Anything

Um. End I believe. That is not to say they aren't available now. They are just due in Q4.
Q3 ENDS September 30. So Q4 - October thru December - means by December 31st in PR Speak. So we'll be lucky to get the update in November. Apple would be very cutting edge to get it out by then.

I thought this was Q4. Apple just reported Q3 results.

I thought this was Q4. Apple just reported Q3 results.

Their fiscal year may not necessarily line up with the calendar year. I've worked for companies like that. Little confusing at first.

According to the calendar we all know and love, Q4 starts at the beginning of the last 3 months of the year (ie, October).

Hmm I thought the fiscal year went like this:
1st Quarter: October 1, 2006 – December 31, 2006
2nd Quarter: January 1, 2007 – March 31, 2007
3rd Quarter: April 1, 2007 – June 30, 2007
4th Quarter: July 1, 2007 – September 30, 2007

Apple just reported their 3rd quarter earnings: https://www.macrumors.com/2007/07/25/apple-posts-818-million-profit-for-3rd-quarter-2007/

Intel of course may work on a different one, ending in December. That may have been confirmed by this:

http://www.intel.com/cd/channel/reseller/asmo-na/eng/342837.htm

Click server and workstation, you will see Harpertown chips on Nov. 11. That might not be OEM release of course.

November 13 It Is Then

According to intel Harpertown is due Nov 11th. Can't see any Mac Pro refresh until after this date.

http://www.intel.com/cd/channel/reseller/asmo-na/eng/342837.htm

Click on Boxed/Server Workstation products. I guess it applies to OEMs as the X5365 (3.0 GHz Clovertown) is checked for release on the 12th Aug which is what happened.
I'm going to have to put this post over on the SS thread as well guys. This makes my prediction of November 13 almost a certainty.

Great find jamoau! Thanks!

Yes but what Intel is saying has nothing to do with anyone's fiscal calendar - it's the calendar year they are referring to.

Systemboard manufacturers have had them for a long time, I believe Intel provide Apple with both processors and systemboard, there is no long testing phase for those components required.
