I'm glad you guys are using the feedback link to tell Apple what you think!

Yeah, they probably won't do anything about it, but at the very least, we might piss someone off at Apple. I hope it does.

so , as macenforcer asked - are you lot STILL going to wait until the next big apple event ?

as i previously stated - and got flamed ( and eventually banned ) for my troubles - blame intel , not apple for the lethargic pace of current progress

apple can only work with what they've got

I still have my Dell Latitude D800 and it works just fine. I'm rather tempted to just build my own machine or buy a Dell N Series.

I have too much invested in OS X when it comes to applications though. A Mac mini won't cut it.

I'm still waiting. And it's not about the procs as much as it's about the video cards and the 1GB included memory. They should include 2GB by default in ALL pro Macs, not just the MBPs.

Yes, I plan to wait for the next big Apple event.
But for me the big event is not some kind of show or expo, just an announcement of a new Mac Pro.

I agree that Apple can only work with what they've got.
I don't blame Intel for the "lethargic pace."
The Intel Penryn series of 45nm processors is a big step.
I think Intel is doing their best to get them out as fast as they can.
We can also thank AMD's Barcelona for pushing Intel.
I am trying to be patient. I think the next Mac Pro will be worth the wait.

I'm still waiting to find out what the upgrades are for the new upcoming MacPro.

I did, however, order a maxed-out Mac Mini 2.0 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo today.

Don't laugh, I know it might sound crazy and very low end, but I at least wanted to get my first Intel Mac ASAP, if not my dream Mac, and this should help tide me over until the "big MacPro announcement."

Then I'll get a major machine for my home office, and put the Mini in my dining room for when I feel like looking out over my garden while I work/play.

Cheers,
--Alice

Good move .. :) It will make your wait for the Pro much more bearable.

unlike my pro it's totally silent

Really? While I don't have any amazing graphics loaded in my Mac Pro, or much RAM, it runs next to silent, with the occasional HDD whir (I have 3 HDDs).

What do you have in there that's making so much heat?

the macmini is an excellent little machine , and unlike my pro it's totally silent

I would have disagree. The mini was rather crappy when I had one (original 1.66 CD (Superdrive). It was slow, seemingly due to the heat, and that was with 2GB of RAM. The graphics and the laptop HD don't help matters. I would not call the mini "an excellent little machine."

Doesn't that depend more on the user and context, I agree that the mac mini would never be my choice of computer for my cad work but for a media centre (connected to tv) it would be fine, especially if all the files are on a nas anyways :).
Its perfect for anyone who just does office and internet type tasks where a mac pro is just slightly overkill for that area wouldn't you say :D

I would agree, but that is what I used the mini. General stuff and it was quite crappy. Maybe I got a bad one, doesn't matter though I ended up selling it for $200 above what I paid.

Apple does need something in the middle. It is getting quite ridiculous.

Somebody posted in some thread (I thought maybe this thread, but I couldn't find it), a link to a site which gave the dates for Apple's Mac update history by line. Anyone know where that is?

for what the average mac user actually does with a mac , a mac mini is a pretty good machine overall

plus it's really quiet

i'd swap my pro for a mini with a decent videocard tomorrow

If the mini had a low end mobile video card I'd buy one and just build my own gaming machine.

The GMA950 scares me with Leopard coming out.

I never really liked the mini, but thats just my opinion. I wish that the apple announcement had been a little more exciting. I have to admit I was disappointed.

You aren't the only one who was disappointed, I assure you. :D I think the mini would be viable if it had discrete graphics, just my opinion though. It would definitely be more attractive as an HTPC solution if it had graphics capable of full HD goodness.

So are you guys going to finally give in and get that Mac Pro now, or are you going to keep holding out till January???

I gave in. My PC is dying a slow and painful death. I work at home a lot, and this is having a really detrimental effect on my productivity so I ordered a MP 3.0 Quad refurb on Wednesday. I also ordered a 30" ACD. The display is here and looks great, but I don't think I'll get the machine until next Tues/Weds.

Oh, and I also have 4GB of RAM to go in it - pretty frustrating that I've got everything but the MP itself!

We all know there will be an update to the MP of some sort and at some stage. To be honest, I'm glad I waited until Aug. 07, but now I couldn't care less, provided they don't update in the next few days before I receive my MP. Let's just hope that because it's a refurb it will all work properly. Bizarrely, when I use the crummy TNT tracking site I can see who got the MP originally. I bought up the page and it said someone had signed for it, and I wondered who the hell it was. Took me a moment to realise my tracking details appeared above it and the original signing was a couple of months old.

Good luck with your refurb, Toby. I'm facing the same exact scenario. My PC is about 4 years old and is ready for retirement and I want to get a MP. I've been looking at the same exact config that you bought. Let us know how it works out. I'm going to hold out for a while longer, but I'm running out of patience and I really want to finish my move to Mac.

Aside from startup fan and DVD drive I never hear anything from my Pro. I came from a MDD G4 which was like some kind of jet engine next to my new tower.

What's the deal with extreme silence anyway? You doing ninja missions while carrying your computer?

Ha ha - I'm typing along on my windtunnel MDD G4... it's remarkable coming from this perspective just how quiet a Mac Pro is.

Not really fair to compare the Mini to a Pro, since the Mini lacks so many things which create lots of heat - a designated video card, multiple 3.5" HDs, lots of RAM, faster processors... all that extra heat requires more fan power and thus more noise.
