In the context of this topic, what was updated? The Ipad Air 2 was not updated. Nor was the Ipad Pro (original) updated.

A new product was created, called the Ipad Pro 9.7 inch. The PRO line was sold as a PRO experience, which is why it had better specs, pencil support, bigger screen, and a graphics processor that could handle 4k video editing with ease. It was a SEPERATE product line from the Ipad Air line. The screen was one of the definitive separation characteristics.

Nothing was updated as far as the Ipad lineup is concerned.

Apple knew a smaller Ipad Pro was coming. The way they characterized the Ipad Pro 13 was dishonest considering this information, because they gave the appearance that there was a DEFINITIVE distinction between the Ipad Air and Pro that was done intentionally to seperate the product lines and capabilities, when in fact, they already knew that the distinction was only going to end up being in screen size for the most part.................

................4 months later.

Why wouldnt Apple just come out during the original Ipad Pro announcement and admit, hey by the way, a 9.7 version is coming in 4 months? Why didn't Apple inform their customer base on this information?

we all know why. because it would of hurt sales. probably ... ALOT.

why would it of hurt sales? Because theres a lot of people that didn't want that screen size, but wanted that power and capability (including pencil support), and so they made a sacrifice in a bigger screen to get PRO features, including pencil support, 4G of RAM, and a great GPU.

Apple punked every Ipad Pro 13 buyer. Now, some might not care. Some might be happy with their purchase. But that doesn't change the fact that Apple ... punked .. their customer base by misrepresenting the nature of their Ipad lineup, where PRO was not only synonymous with better specs ... but bigger screen (A PRO screen do to PRO work)... when in fact, they already knew the only main distinction 4 months later would be the screen size excluding small advances that are nice but not earth shattering)

Its very obvious what happened. Its very obvious that they released a product, sold it as a seperate catagory that they already knew was going to change 4 months and which, if the COSTUMER BASE knew beforehand ... would negatively effect their sales.

This ain't rocket science. People got punked by Apple, whether they care if they did or not, or admit if they did or not.

lolz, when has apple ever been honest? its capitalism baby, its a dog eat dog world. llaissez faire economics. social Darwinism. wake up nooob!

and good luck editing 4k with that turd. apple does not care about you, they only care about extracting your money.

I completely agree with this, that was what I was trying to say on my post actually!

I don't understand the arguments for the expectation for "exclusive" features on the larger iPad Pro 12.9" simply because it is larger. Do people not pay attention to Apple's product launch patterns?

The first MacBook Pro to feature a Retina display and a slimmer profile was the larger 15" model. This was followed shortly by the 13" model.
The first iMac was to feature a Retina display and a slimmer profile was the 27" model. The 21.5" model followed shortly.
The first iPad to feature a Retina display was the iPad 3 - the iPad mini 2 took some time to follow up.
The iPad mini itself was launched only after the debut of the original iPad.
Even the iPhone SE could be arguably be a "mini successor" to all the new features Apple introduced with the 6 and 6S (admittedly sans Force touch)

Apple often goes with a "flagship model" which is the larger version, generally easier to engineer for because there's more space, and probably because they can charge higher premiums. Although not unexpected, it isn't unprecendented that they would launch a smaller "model" of a flagship Pro product.

True, the new iPad Pro adds a few more features that older one did not. You could say something similar for the 12" MacBook v. The MacBook Air (Retina display, USB-C, significantly lighter...). This is entirely up to Apple's perogrative. Contrary to what fanboys might think, the ordinary person isn't even aware that Apple has launched a new product until they see someone else use it or they feel like window shopping the Apple Store.

Normal people don't hang onto every single Apple keynote. They just buy when they see something they feel is useful and/or fun. Sure, as Apple fanboys and/or tech enthusiasts, we'll feel the annoyance more because we spend a lot more and enjoy the feeling of entitlement / exclusivity. It just so happens this time around that "enjoyment" lasted a really short time.

If you're still feeling bad, read this comic. It's funny, but it very accurately describes the feeling of many posters in this thread, including myself.

I'd advise everyone to just take a step back and do something else. Your degree of being shafted after Apple's keynotes aren't that important - life goes on....

In my case I am not mad, but for me this case was different to most of the ones you mention, for example in the case of the Retina Macbooks it was clear to me since they first announced it that the 13 inch Pro was also getting the update. I have read here a couple of people who said they actually waited because they knew this was coming, so maybe this was just me but I really believed because of the way Apple talked of the iPad Pro that this would be a different product line with exclusive features so I actually didn't expect this to happen. So because of this I'm not mad at Apple after all is just a product and I do believe maybe I was just too naive, but I can't help but feel that what Apple did in this case and the way in which the presented the product was decieving due to the fact they for sure knew this was coming just a few months later.
Maybe if this product would have come out a year later it would have been different, but 4 months is just too much for me, I believe the right thing to do would have been to present both on the same day, specially because of the fact that the 9.7 version even has some more features which for sure is not very logical when you ee the product line. Finally the fact that they released now the 256GB version makes it even worse, I do believe there are many IPP owners who would like this alternative, and know if they want it they will have to lose like $500 making the switch

The way I read it, you wanted the Pencil and thought that the only way you could get it is if you purchased the larger iPad, but you very much prefer the ergonomics of the smaller one.

Technically you didn't really lose out. You still have the ability to use the Apple Pencil. Admittedly it's unfortunate that your preferred form factor was unavailable at the time. The only "bad" thing is the short time frame leading to the introduction of the smaller iPad Pro.

It's pretty much the same annoyance I have, for slightly different reasons. A smaller iPad supporting the Apple Pencil was something that was inevitable, but Apple could have been more courteous to mention that it was likely in less than 6 months. Well, I've actually written to Tim Cook about this, I think it's a valid point. You can add your voice (send to tcook@apple.com) - I certainly agree it's not a good customer experience to have such short product cycles without warning.

I absolutely expected the Air 3 (iPad Mini) to have very similar specs, but I did not count on the 256GB option. hearing all the hype and news about the 12mp camera and Pencil support made no difference to me. So this isn't about me being mad that the 9.7" has a different camera or other stuff, it's the timing and fact that like nalbagli said, to get that extra storage we would lose $500, Apple could have had their cake and eaten too had they offered the 256GB storage option in November. And of course us being mad about technology is stupid, but so is being mad at most things yet we still are. The main important thing is that if you are angry don't allow it to impede your's or other people's lives (meaning try not to be a D-bag. lol) ;)
Anyhoo, I will get over this, it might take me a while as I've never experienced an unforseen annoyance from Apple before. Usually they do things pretty expected, so this took me off guard, (but mostly on just the principle of it.)
If I emailed cook saying how I find the 256GB thing a tad annoying, and somehow he actually read the email... what would he do? Email me back saying: "Our apologies for any inconvenience, thanks for being a loyal Apple customer." meh, not worth it. lol

iPad 1 - released with basically unusable 256MB RAM after 1 iOS update

iPad 2 - solid update but had features that were suppose to be in the iPad 1 mainly the front facing camera (there's even a cutout in the original iPad lol)

iPad 3 - got Retina display which was what people wanted and then got screwed over with underpowered chip

iPad 4 - releases later the same year with lightning cable, the chip iPad Air 3 should have had

iPad mini - specs from the iPad 2...yes specs from 3 years ago

iPad Air - A7 chip also got screwed over being the 1st gen 64-bit, 1GB RAM

iPad mini 2 - had whole stupid gamut-gate thing right?

iPad Air 2 - solid update

iPad mini 3 - lol

iPad mini 4 - ok? but seems like the stepchild in terms of specs and support form Apple

iPad Pro - suppose to be good but seems more like a desperate move to sell more iPads

iPad Pro 9.7 - has features 4 month old iPad Pro 13 doesn't have, missing features iPad Pro 13 does have

You can't tell me people who follow Apple didn't see this **** coming from a mile away. lol But seriously guys...when was the iPad mini 3 released...

Again, the features don't surprise me at all, I expected the iPad Air 3/Pro Mini in the spring with similar specs, the storage is really the only "WTHeck?" thing. How could anyone outside Apple have foreseen them doing that? lol
I was also surprised no new Mac mentions, or even quiet updates. (Yes all rumors pointed out there would be no update... but I wanted to hope.) ;)

You obviously cannot see the fury and anger in WHY - Apple is notorious for gimping hardware and/or selling you bullsh_t products that you never intended to buy from the beginning. From a crippled phone OS on a giant 13" iPad display to no real way to attach anything to the iPad to allow transferring of data to/from (at least not quickly enough). You also can't forget how they milk you on each upgrade and in this case I was TOLD BY PHIL SCHILLER the iPad Pro 12.9 was the best iPad period but hey you know what how about on the 31st day of your purchase we unveil a smaller iPad that I don't want, call it the same name iPad Pro, slap on some iPhone 6S camera hardware, GIVE YOU a NEW DISPLAY, offer you hey Siri tech without being plugged in and worst offer 256GB for a little more. All this happening after 4 months time frame only.

Apple's goal is nothing but pure profit margins. Look at the iPhone SE! Same display as 2013. Take out some hardware stuff and call it as good as iPhone 6S. What a load of crock, $400 for a 16GB 2013 display 640p low res dung phone. My god next thing you know we'll be sporting 3.5" phones because it's hip to go backwards in time.

Well I purchased my iPad Pro less than a month ago, if I were to do it today, I'd still buy the same one. It's still just as good and as capable as it was a day ago. It's still just as good and as capable as if I bought it today.

That there was going to be a smaller version was inevitable. I had very little doubt when I made the switch that the replacement for the Air 2 was going to be a small iPad Pro.

Couldn't care less about the new one, the new Pro is missing once vital component that was the one main factor in my purchase. The 12.9 inch screen.
If Apple were to update the original Pro so soon, there would be a lot of unhappy customers. Something they've done once before with iPad and are unlikely to repeat.

As for your othe complaints, well those are your problems and no one can dispute their relevance to you. But the Pro doesn't run a crippled phone os, it runs an optimised mobile os. I've used OS X on a tablet, it's awful, iOS is definitely the way to go. Sure they could tweak some things for the larger screen and they might well do that with iOS X. Other than that any limitations in the software it runs are down to the developers of the software.

Do you really want to take photos and video with a 13" tablet? I sure wouldn't, it's a bit cumbersome. My iPad is never anywhere that my iPhone isn't so I guess it doesn't bother me. Just like I don't care about Hey Siri, I disable it on everything but my Watch, but of course that's just me.

The only thing I think I'd like to have seen on my Pro is the true tone display. But it's not something that would stop me from buying it. I can wait until the Pro 2 for it.

Now don't get me wrong, I'm not disputing that Apple like to fleece us, the USB-C Lightning cable and higher capacity power supply should have been standard from the get go with the iPad Pro. Not optional purchases to the tune of £65, or what I'm guessing is about $100. That's something they should be chastised for.

The rest, meh, Apple is as Apple does. It's not new to me, I'm used to it after all these years. My very first Mac was superseded less than a week after I purchased it. That was in the days before we knew it was going to happen long before it did. So nowadays I think it's even easier to make an informed decision with all of the leaks and constant monitoring of supply chains.

Once you buy it, your basically screwed.

I remember even buying the Garageband app for iOS before it was free. Guess what, Apple released the app, made it free but costs IAP and I lost all my features I paid for.

They've done it with the iPad 4? Iirc, Apple released a 128GB model in February 2013 just a few months after the iPad 4's release.

I bought the 12.9" iPad and if I was buying one today, I'd still get the 12.9" iPad. For me, the bigger screen is the single biggest reason I got the iPad Pro and it's a brilliant device for my needs.

Unfortunately, it seems some people get upset if Apple introduce anything new because it somehow invalidates their bragging rights

That's the whole point of MR. To say **** about products other than Apple's and then to complain that Apple ****ed them over somehow.

Them's the breaks though. It's hardly as if its exclusive to Apple products. As I mentioned with my first Mac many, many moons ago. It was replaced less than a week after I bought it. What I didn't mention was that I didn't care, it was good enough for me to have decided to buy it. Heck I could even have returned it, but for a minor spec bump, meh why bother. It served me for many happy years.

Yes, but this is an Apple forum. I don't want to talk about literally every other thing in life that wears and tears and gets replaced as soon as you buy it. People won't be able to handle it.

But you know the solution the problem is? Don't upgrade every year. People that want the latest and greatest are asking themselves to get screwed over.

I do think it's a genuine annoyance that a 256GB version was released mere months after initial release. Given the 12.9" iPad Pro has a more productivity bent, I would've held off on buying the 128GB model, too, if I had an inkling that Apple was going to release a 256GB model soon.

Indeed, I was pretty tempted to get the iPad Pro but having only 128GB gave me pause.

Very true. Indeed many of us who do update often, in all likelihood, probably don't need to for the most part.

For example. The iPhone 6S series is the first iPhone I haven't actually updated to on release day, ever. Instead I decided to stick with my 6 Plus and wait for the 7 (I was actually just curious to see how long I could hold out :D) but you know what I find myself longing for from the 6S? Nothing.

It actually hasn't bothered me in the least, the one I have still does exactly what I need it to. Maybe I've finally broke free of the update urge and I'll only get one when I need one, or when there's a significantly worthy update. that'd please the wife at least ;)

The two iPP give a slightly different user experience in real world - they are not competing with each other - it's like the difference between 13" and 15" Mbpr. Next time the iPP 13" II will outperform the now 10". That's how things work. The current product line of Apple is indeed pretty messy nonetheless.

What they have done wrong, or could much better, is the 256 GB 13" iPP. The existence of top storage model should have released last September. One upgrade for each product per year.

I most certainly do not feel "plunked." My iPad Pro 12.9 is what I wanted when I bought it and it still is. My iPhone 6s+ is what I wanted whe I bought it and it still is. In both cases I wanted the larger size and I got it. I plan on upgrading both to IOS 9.3 and continuing to happily use them.

Written on my iPad Pro 12.9. :D

Bought my IPP in December. Love it and honestly the only thing that got me was the 256gb update. Everything else I'm not interested in. I don't take selfies/videos with my IPP. The main pictures I take are of lectures/slides/notes for editing. That's about it. I don't want the shifting screen either. I want a consistent color throughout the day and whatever lighting I am in. A consumption device I love - netflix, hulu, videos, youtube, plex, email, web and all that.

Love my IPP and will get the next version that comes out.

Wow, some folks have way to much time on their hands. It's simple, Apple is a business like any other. They are in it to make money, not be nice guys. Profit is the name of the game at the end of the day, period end of story.

No matter what all the whiners and complainers say I think Apple is still a reputable company that designs quality products and has very good customer support. I think android sucks and have tried going down that road. My Apple products stand the test of time, it is I that choose to upgrade whenever I can and I know pretty much when to expect Apple to do this.

Am I happy with that I could have purchased an ipad pro with more memory had I waited, sure, but I didn't wait and have resigned myself to be an early adopter, which comes with pros and cons. It is what it is and it is completely pointless to moan and bitch or feel angry about it.

So I look forward to purchasing my new Ipad at midnight on a Verizon lease program and will enjoy that one and give my Air 2 to my wife!

Yup, although the reports suggest that the chips needed for 256GB became available between the Sept announcement and now. I wouldn't be surprised if there were some folks as frustrated in Apple as some of us are with Apple on that front. I mostly only need 64GB storage, so I don't really have a dog in this particular fight.

And here's the thing, I'm not interested in the "upgrades" the 9.7" got over the the larger Pro either. But, I get to put up with a camera hump if I want a 9.7" Pro (which I do). Thanks, Apple. I may play with the TrueTone feature, but I suspect I'll turn it off at some point.
