If 3GS is CAD 549, I would say the iPhone 4 16GB will be CAD 699 and 32GB will be CAD 799.

If iPhone 4 is only 50 bucks more than 3GS who the hell would get the 3GS

What people were thinking is iPhone 4 at 649 and 749, making it $100 more than the 3GS. Just like last year with the 3G and 3GS, and the current $100 difference in the US from 3GS to 4.

That's even better!!!!

I really really want one of these elusive factory unlocked iPhone 4 from Canada/Europe/Asia now :D

Yeah, its weird since the 3GS wasn't available before in 8GB and there was no storage bump this year.

Currently we had 8GB 3G, 16GB 3GS, 32GB 3GS at 599, 699, 799 cdn ($100 more than the US prices: 499, 599, 699).

But now its most likely we'll have 8GB 3GS, 16GB 4, 32GB 4 at 549, 649, 749 ($50 more than the US prices: 499, 599, 699).

Yeah very interesting indeed... Can't wait for initial impression on these "factory unlocked" models from Canada/Europe/Asia. If they are not locked to the first simcard you put in (which I don't think), that'll be a definite YES for me :)

Guys, read here:
http://store.apple.com/ca/browse/home/shop_iphone/family/iphone?mco=OTY2ODA2OQ

Specifically:
When you purchase your iPhone from the Apple Online Store, you’ll get it commitment-free. So you can sign up for service with the carrier of your choice and change your carrier at any time.

This means that the iPhone 4 will be released in Canada with no contract or carrier lock. This also means that the Apple online store Canada will sell the iPhone 4 for full price (possibly 599/699 CDN) with factory unlock!

and this is the reason why its not launching until July. So we from the US won't just cross border to pick one up.

I highly doubt if iPhone 4 works like the current
All in all, I just find it really strange that US is the only country so far that you cannot purchase a factory unlocked, SIM-free, No commitment iPhone 4. I guess I will be importing my iPhone 4 from Canada/Europe/Asia where they are selling these unlocked... Very sick of participating in the cat and mouse game with Apple and Dev Team for the past 3 years.

As with current generation iPhone, I am sure you can get a Non Commitment price for iPhone 4 fairly soon but unfortunately it will probably be LOCKED to AT&T network too which renders it useless if I travel overseas.

Yes, this is true. And what kills me is that AT&T said they will never unlock the iPhone no matter what.

I did get a call from AT&T earlier today; they left a voice mail which I have. Anyway, the call stemmed from my complaint to the FCC because AT&T will not unlock a no-commitment iPhone unlike every other phone they have. The girl who called cited the agreement between AT&T & Apple although it may be revisited at a later date.

I guess it's a move onto the FTC.

Like I mentioned in the other thread, I don't understand why paying full price for the phone (599/699 for no commitment) does not allow us to get the phone UNLOCKED.

I am trying to find out which part of my organs they need to do so ;)

iPhone's sold now are unlocked to any Canadian carrier (that supports the iPhone), but as soon as you put in a Canadian sim card, it will lock the phone to that network.
It's doubtful that this will apply to these iPhones (both 3GS and 4) purchased directly from the Apple Online Store. As evidence, take a look at some of the FAQ entries:
Do I need to commit to a long-term contract for my iPhone?
Buying a commitment-free iPhone from the Apple Online Store allows you choose your own carrier and change carriers at any time. iPhone may also be available at a reduced initial price with a contract directly from your wireless carrier.
If the phone became permanently locked the first time you inserted a Canadian carrier's SIM card, then this would be a false statement -- you could not change carriers at any time.

Can I use my iPhone outside my home country?
Yes. iPhone is enabled to work on carrier networks using GSM around the world. Because the iPhone sold by the Apple Online Store is commitment-free, you can purchase a SIM or micro-SIM card and service from a local carrier at your destination. Or check with your home carrier regarding international roaming charges.
This would also be a false statement for similar reasons -- after using your phone at home at first, when you travelled you wouldn't be able to substitute a local carrier's card.

I'm cool with waiting till July to cross the boarder. Hell, I'll make a weekend trip out of it. :D

Ditto...
I'm actually researching about duties/tax if I ask my buddy in Canada to send one to me against the plane ticket to Toronto (No I am not driving 10 hrs from RI to Canada)

goosnarrggh in a few posts above summed it all. it is unlocked 100%. it will NOT be locked when you put in some sim card, because that will falsify all the statements in the FAQ.

For those of you who will go to Canada to get an iPhone 4, I remember reading Apple's terms and conditions, where you cannot buy an Apple product from another country and use it on your own. In other words, you may not buy an iPhone/iPad/iAnything and use it primarily in US. Correct me if I am wrong.

Of course, who will listen to such a rule is beyond me.

what? its actually advantageous to buy something in Canada over the US? Must be the first time in history thats ever happened.

WOOOHOOO!! For the 1st time, there’ll be line up northbound at the Canada/US border!

We didn’t get iPhone4 in June release, but getting unlocked a month later is so much better!!

Will you still need to use a iPhone plan when trying to sign up with a carrier?

Kinda new to this, but currently I have a 3G with Rogers and I dont have the normal iPhone plan that everyone else has.

I got some student plan which includes the following:

-My10 (Unlimited calling and text to any 10 people)
-2500 Texts
-500 Min
-Rogers - Rogers free (Calling)
-NO DATA
-Voicemail/Caller ID
Costs $40/Month

So if I purchase this no commitment plan, will I be able to use my current plan or will I be forced to go with those iPhone plans that usually end up with a cost of 80+/Month

There is no different in the phone except for that little gift from Apple and AT&T inside the US iPhone 4 that locked the baseband :p

You'll be able to use it with any plan, including the one you already have.

Even if you upgrade to an iPhone through rogers, bell, etc, you can use any voice+data plan with minimum of $50/month.

The price of the 16GB version should work out slightly cheaper than an iPad 16GB 3G.

Going by the UK pricing structure. 16GB iPhone £499 vs 16GB 3G iPad £529

So going by that logic, the 16GB iPhone should be $649

I can't find the straight up answer anywhere.

If anyone buys an "unlocked" iPhone 4 from the Canadian online Apple Store, will it work for T-Mo in the US???

It will work on T-mobile USA's gsm/edge/2G network, but not their 3G network.

someone asked if they will ship to US, thats a no
You dont have to show any sort of ID, just walk in and walk out
border charges and duties are pretty random. Once i got charged $7 for a $20 item and once i got charged nothing for a $40 item (this is coming into Canada)

And to all those who cant make the trip up to Canada, find a Canadian friend or make one on MacRUmors :p lol

factory unlocked iphone worth the extra month wait?? HELL YEA :apple:

in all seriousness i wouldnt mind helping someone out, but trust will go a long way. Its a gamble but if are willing to trust someone with about $800 then its worth the gamble

That would be awesome, hopefully when the iPhone comes out up there I can find a Canadian MacRumors member nice enough to buy me an iphone with cash I send them and mail it to the U.S haha. Most Macrumors folks seem like trustworthy people :)
