Sorry folks, there seems to be some conflicting info in this thread and I'm a little dim on this Monday. Can someone clear this up please.

I'm presently in the middle of my three year contract with fido on my 3G iPhone. Can I buy an unlocked i4 from apple, just plunk in the sim from the 3G and continue using the same contract? What happens at the end of my contract, can I then choose to go where i want with the i4?

Cheers, thanks.

Yes that's right. I bought a Sony X10 Android phone, took the sim out of my iP3G and plugged it into my X10 with no problems.

Yes you can do that and your iPhone 4 will work fine with your existing plan and features.
At the end of your contract you are going on what is called a "month-by-month" plan meaning you can cancel your service at any time without penalty. You can then take that iPhone 4 and use it on any of the carriers that support it throughout the world and it will be ok.

will i face any activation on the iphone if i buy it commitment free? or will it just work on first boot and i can pop in my own sim?

Yes, the standard $36 AT&T activation charge, if it's a new line. No charge if you already have the right iPhone data plan. :)

So if I buy one in Canada because I'm Canadian with a Canadian address and then have my family send it to me here in Japan, that means I've bought an unlocked phone for me to use with any carrier here in Japan right? :)

Got a Canadian credit card? Need one to buy it online. But otherwise nothing wrong with what you plan on doing.

Would this work? Buying in US dollars, a gift card from the Canadian Apple online store. Then using the gift card to purchase an unlocked iPhone and have it shipped to a friend who lives in Canada to have him mail it to me here in the US?

No - I don't believe so. I don't think you can use gift cards online. I think they specifically say on the back they can only be used in-store. You'll need a Canadian credit card.

You can't use the same sim as the 3G since the iphone4 uses micro sim. So either you have to modify your 3G sim or get a micro sim and then enjoy your new toy :)
