You hit the nail there. This is also Apple’s way to stop having to repair phones. I have a feeling many people will be told that it’s “just cosmetic”, and their AppleCare claims will get denied. The unibody design has made it now where there will be no way to repair anything about the external of the phone. This will also probably drive up Apple’s profits from AppleCare.

Some people just don’t care how beat up their things look. My wife wore a pair of glasses for years that had a scratch in the middle of a lens. That would have made me insane! She didn’t care at all. If you’re bothered by things looking scratched, dented, scraped, aluminum is a worse material. If you just care that your phone still functions, looks aside, I guess these drop tests might be a good thing for you.

I, for one, have loved the steel and titanium frames since the X. I don’t care if the titanium was a thin band on the shell. Titanium is still stronger than aluminum and doesn’t dent or gauge like aluminum.
I dropped my 15 Pro a few times. One time it looked like a decent amount of damage to one of the corners, however to my surprise I was able to rub it off literally.

Looking at my 17 Air vs 16 Pro - love the 17 Air sleek titanium finish and thin design.

So happy to get a premium feel now...

Walked into the Apple Store and every Orange/Blue 17 Pro Max on display was already scratched up with MagSafe rings. I got the Silver, and honestly, the Pro feels ridiculously cheap in hand. This is the first iPhone Pro that doesn’t feel like a Pro at all. On top of that, Apple’s marketing is completely misleading they hype it as some kind of ‘invincible’ phone, but the reality couldn’t be further from that. Totally disappointed this year
Weird. I saw quite a lot of them displayed in an Apple Store and not a single one was scratched or dented. I wonder what could explain the discrepancy….

Whilst I appreciate the worry in ductility from using Aluminium, a phone is ultimately just a tool to get a job done. I’d always consider a case because if you ding that up and then have a wedding or something you can always swap it out.

At the Apple store I went to on launch day, there were lots of demo accessory items that people were snapping onto the backs of the display phones.

They were being slapped on, slid on, slid off, twisted on/off....

That combined with the handling of dirty hands makes for a worn out look quickly...

I’m surprised so many people are up in arms over the use of aluminum. I guess the choice of materials doesn’t affect my use in any way whereas having to sacrifice battery life and most notably the camera system does. The materials of the air might suggest premium but that single camera lens is reminiscent of the SE.

Right ?
Why do people consider frame/case material such an issue ?

Or for the majority of us who use cases on stainless steel, aluminum, or titanium - makes the material a moot point...

Or why don't these pro iPhone owners complaining about the material, just pony up $5,000 and get theirs made in 24k gold w/ diamonds - then they can tout they are "premium"...

Right it’s funny. I left my house today 3 hours ago, listened to an hour of music on my AirPods while I worked out and then drove to work and my phone is still at 97%. Don’t give a hoot about aluminum vs titanium.

Yup, my iPhones are always in a case so the material is non starter because I never carry it naked....

Or maybe, just maybe, Apple introduced us to new materials since the iPhone 5 (stainless steel & titanium)

But yet decided to go back to aluminum.
Hopefully Apple never makes a phone like a 3GS; people will freak!

But yeah, since the 4 and except for the 6-8, the Pro has been built solid with glass, ssteal, and titanium (the full X generation) - until now.

And the Air now has the materials used in the X gen (stainless steel sides & solid glass back).

Not me. I specifically said I expected a premium 17P experience. Then after handling them I think that the overall feel of the 17PM is a downgrade from the 16PM. I did buy a 17PM for the cameras, but I consider it a less elegant phone than the 16PM.
Agreed. Some of these people have a hard time accepting that. I’m considering returning my Air for a pro max but that doesn’t change the fact that it looks and feels cheap lol
That was not your argument though. Your argument was that titanium felt better and that made the iPhone 15 Pro feel more premium. The iPhone 17 Pro Max is larger and bigger than the 15 Pro Max. Under your standards how much larger would it have to be before it would make sense to pick a material that could dissipate heat better.

All of this over a tiny part of titanium used in a previous iPhone model.
its .4 inches larger you sound absolutely ridiculous. Get over it bro.

Exactly. I don’t know how people can defend the finish quality on the new iPhone Pro models.

The build quality on the iPhone Air is miles ahead.

Will you be returning your new phone for a refund?
I have the Air, Robert. It feels wonderful because it’s made of titanium. But I still might return it for a 17 Pro Max or I might keep my 15, mostly because of cameras.

you do know it’s still perfectly reasonable to criticize the crappy materials that were used and still be willing to purchase it for other reasons.

The difference here is that I don’t justify my actions by making excuses for a multi trillion dollar company.

This is the best post I have seen in this entire phone scratch issue.

Id be fine with a super thin, super light carbon fiber or any material phone that needs a case to avoid breaking. That way with the case on, the overall phone is thinner and lighter. The "premium feel" only happens during trade in of a new phone, since it will live in a case for its life anyway. No matter what it is made out of, it will require a case to not get scratched up, and to help with drops.

Hell make the internals all unibody, and integrate a replaceable rubber like edge band, and plastic back so we can run caseless and just replace the scratched pieces. I'd be all over that. Then the aftermarket can make new legos to snap into it. Go back to replaceable batteries...

Honestly, demo units go though like a year's worth of wear in a day!

This is super confusing to me, as I almost exclusively charge via MagSafe and my 15 Pro that I've had for 2 years until the Air came out looks flawless. No 'burn' rings on the back from wireless charging, or any real damage other than a few pin prick dings around the edge where the glass meets the case from a couple times it slid out of my pocket in the car and went under the seat. This thread is also the first time I've even seen anyone suggest this.
Cool. I’m always glad when someone doesn’t have issues with something, even if I experience them myself.

All of y’all replying saying you never heard of it, take 5 seconds and just type in “MagSafe leaving marks” into google, then click on the images tab. Not sure why everyone thinks I’m just making it up 😂

What makes an object, iPhone or otherwise, feel "cheap"?

Is it the size, the weight, or the materials used, or something else? Would changing this (whatever it is) make the phone better?

My instinct is to answer weight. My iPhone Pro's have always been weighty; and when I go to a store and pick up a Pixel (Pro or not) I think how light and tinker-toy it feels. lol IMHO
