Best thing to hope for is for apple to release a phone and eliminate the lightening port. This would have to be soon for them not to say, sorry all you wired CarPlay guys, you are out of luck.

Unfortunately the upcoming iPhone 12 is not it, so maybe iphone 13? That's a very long wait

What are the odds an update does exist that GM isn’t pushing OTA? Thanks.

Knowing GM? 90-99% :p I know the radios were designed for OTA updates.... but I don't know how often they use that or if they ever actually enabled that function for anything more than updating apps vs the infotainment system.

All I know is that my wife’s 2019 Equinox has had several OTA updates with my 2020 Malibu so far at zero. Regardless neither the original or USB-C versions result in anything other than a solid red LED and no connection pairing whatsoever.

I have a feeling that is not something a OTA from GM will fix.

I made my first tests with Carlinkit dongle (old version with USB-A) and 2020-06-17 software.
Now the navigation apps (TomTom and Google Maps) use the location service of the built-in car location service (GPS) and not the phone's location services. That's great! I already tested the dongle some weeks ago with 2020-01 software and this didn't work in this way. Now they parse the GPS signal from car into the CarPlay interface.
I can put my iphone into the pocket or even put it into a box and the navigation still works :D.
Great!

Yea, I know the 12 will still have it, but the question is, if the 13 doesn't have it in the fall of 2021, what will Apple do about a solution for wired CarPlay users? A) Nothing: too bad its old technology. B) Develop their own dongle similar to the 16-pin to lightening adapter provided users with added life to accessories. C) Certify/Authorize one of their trusted business partners (Belkin?) to develop one.

I think if B and C were likely, we would have already heard through the rumor mill about development. Finally, maybe it's not that simple to develop a dongle that will work with every car since there are so many different types of systems and head units. You would think it would be as simple as emulating the output of the phone wireless to the USB port in the same exact fashion as when wired, but we all know this hasn't been the case with our dongles. Maybe the connect technology of our dongles is limited because of work arounds and hacks Apple would not have to deal with.

I’m tempted to go to my manufacturer and get any official card system updates to see if that helps, but it would £100’s and still no guarantee.

Doesn't your dealer have some (new) cars (that probably have a newer firmware on the nav) in the Showroom with Carplay-Support that you could give a quick try?

I'd like to think Apple wouldn't tell people with 5+ year car loans to take a hike, but I wouldn't be surprised at the same time.

I guess another good sign is that they haven’t abandoned wired CP in terms of making car manufacturers only offer wireless. In fact there are very few car models with wireless CarPlay rolling off assembly lines.

My bet is on a smart connector (like on iPads) if Lightning ever gets ditched. Wireless-only would be too much of a setback for people relying on fast charging, and there's just too many accessories (audio/midi, etc.) relying on a physical connection & power imho.

The Prosser rumor is basically an apple watch style charger that would carry power but no data.

@BUXjr these are the items that I purchased.

The 5V 60 second delay relay. I paid the extra the $2.75 for shipping and I got it in about 10 days:

The enclosure link. I had to purchase it with another delay relay however, it's a 12V relay so it won't work, the way we are trying to use it. I messaged the seller and he said I was unable to purchase just the enclosure.

The usb extension link through Amazon. I bought the 1.5ft one because I have a 2017 Tahoe and I have this behind the radio in the storage department plugged into the USB. If you are putting it in the center console and hiding it like @2018 Denali, you would need a longer extension:

Attached below are the photos.

@John Swiderski that’s great to hear!

People with GM vehicles having the issue where the dongle interface won’t work or load when you are trying to initially setup it up this worked for me. Alright so what I did was I went into developer mode on the radio itself and toggled through some of the options without changing anything and then returning to home page by selecting the home button on the radio. Here is a link to how to put the radio in developer mode.
In case; you don’t want to watch the video, it’s pressing the Power button + Home button + Menu button at the same time.

I’m not sure if this resets something or what, but it worked for me after weeks trying to get my 2017 Chevy Tahoe to recognize the dongle was plugged in. I would do this without having the dongle plugged in and once you exit developer mode plug in the dongle.

@jlhunter2008 This sounds like the same thing I found with my Pioneer radio a couple weeks ago starting with firmware 2020.06.17. If you get the blank screen, it doesn't mean the dongle is not loading or working it just means the radio did not get a video on signal. If you press the screen where the audio controls should be displayed, it will usually cause it to start playing (or switch to the full screen audio display if you don't touch it in the right spot). Forcing a different function of any kind to display (in my case the on-screen climate control information) triggers a signal reset permitting the carlinkit/carplay2air interface to be viewed. Nice thing is that you shouldn't have to have the dongle unplugged while doing this (I never do anyways).

The cause of no video on signal? I don't know. I do know I did not have the issue on my USB-C model before switching to 2020.06.xx and even though I could not activate my USB-A version until I tried the 2020.06.xx firmwares, it never had any trouble displaying the setup screen every time I tried to get it work prior. Honestly, it is not even a consistent issue for either of my devices.

Thanks for the post. I wasn't sure if I should post the issue and workaround or not because for some reason, switching my Pioneer's display to the backup camera or onscreen climate control and back ALSO causes the headunit to think I was changing the selected CarPlay card/function. Now I know the 2 things are not related :)

Well well well. I will have to try a third time now.

I can not access the developer mode on my mylink 3. Does it work on mylink 3?

Mylink 3 units (2019-current) have different software than the Mylink 2 (2015-2018 (2019?)) radios, so accessing developer mode is probably different, if it is even possible.

@BUXjr I didn't realize that GM is on Mylink version 3 now.... adding to the issues of developing a firmware that works properly with their vehicles.

Unfortunately it didn't work for me. When I plug the dongle on my MyLink3, at first I receive a message about Apple Carplay and a button that I have to click to accept it. After I click on it, it starts to find the cellphone but never found it. The configuration cplay2air screen never was showed me. Sorry about my bad english.

I'm assuming you probably aren't in the US then?

You seem knowledgeable about GM Mylink. I have a 2016 Silverado, which I assume came with Mylink 2? Anyways, I was not able to find info on whether the touch screen is restrictive or capacitive. I found this Australian company that makes a device called Mimics G4 that allows you to control the phone from the nav screen but it only works with resistive screens.

I saw earlier that a July update was released, can anyone confirm if this is available OTA? I don't want to go dig my unit out if it's not available OTA yet.

Have you flashed this yet via USB? What version does it report? Work ok?
He did. (Denali did too.) It's in his screenshot: 2020.07.08.1306. Evidently it works, but doesn't resolve the 5min audio glitch.

NOT available OTA. Just a daily build; flash at your own risk!

You can always check this URL to see if a release has gone officially OTA:
OTA - JSON LINK
If "filePath" is incomplete and "fileSize" is zero, they did not post an OTA version.

Agreed! I do think Apple could get this resolved. They control what CarPlay is outputting from our phones and what CarPlay is displaying on the screens of our head units. If anyone will know how to send that across without hiccups, it's Cupertino. And yes, if they would rather bless an aftermarket/3rd party (like Belkin) to manufacture and market such an item, then I'm sure they would share the secret sauce with them. C'mon Apple!!!

Until then, WHERE'S OUR FIXED FIRMWARE?!?!?! Listening to tunes, 5 minutes at a time is getting super old!

Nor can I. No ‘menu’ button.

Your English is great. You get further than I do. Just a solid red LED with nothing else.
