Anyone know how this works "under the hood"? What's driving the actual UI? Is it some sort of screen mirroring? Or does it do video-out over the Lightning connector? I'm having a hard time visualizing how it would work over Wi-Fi unless mirroring was used.

I'm not a fan of mirroring, so if that's how it's being done, I'm not particularly interested.

Video mirroring is the answer - it appears:

"The connection is based on a streaming H.264 video feed that returns user input from the touch screen."

Did anyone notice the artist on iTunes was In Flames, a Swedish metal band! I literally LOL'd. Because that's awesome.

one concern i have is that most current car touchscreens have horrible response-times. it could seriously degrade the experience of using iOS if you have to hit the same button 3 times to get a response...part of the charm of iOS is its responsiveness.

Toyota, but no lexus?

Chances are Lexus falls under the Toyota brand, similar to how Acura is represented with just Honda (since Honda has alread confirmed Acura's will have CarPlay).

Anyways, knowing that the whole display is not dedicated to CarPlay, I'm curious to see how other manufacturers implement the system into their displays.

I also am curious to see how it operates with something like Mercedes's COMMAND controller/touchpad or BMW's iDrive

This sir, I know all too well. Toured with these lads years ago. ;)

Very nice - coincidentally "The Pale Haunt Departure" is on heavy rotation in my living room these days, great work! :D

On topic: It reminds me of the Ford / Microsoft Sync that we have in our Explorer, although it certainly should be nice to have the devices more embedded. Plus the touch screen feels really cheap, icky and rough compared to tablets/smartphones. One of the major issues that Ford / Microsoft had was complaints from users about the display being too distracting due to clutter and other stuff, I hope this won't become an issue with Apple's system.

Personally, that interface ask you to have your eyes off the road for too long. Today I can change radio stations in my car and changing the AC without taking my eyes off the road. It is more intuitive.

I am not agreed with the Car Play system replacing the actual systems.

Did you read the original post at all? See below:

the feature can be summoned and controlled on compatible cars through Siri voice control, a touchscreen, and on-board buttons. From there, users are able to access various iOS apps such as Maps, Phone, Messages, Podcasts, and Music. Third party apps such as Beats Radio, iHeartRadio, Spotify, and Stitcher are also supported, with Apple promising compatibility with more apps soon.

Samsung just announced car S-Play (pronounced "carsplay" totally different than carplay according to Samsung CEO.). Apparently it turns your entire windshield into a giant Super-AMOLED curved 4k display. This was quoted from the CEO's keynote.

"Google thinks Glass is the answer, but Glass make people pissed off. (20 minute off broadway skit where a young journalist gets mugged and she posts the whole thing on Facebook. Sung to "it's a hard knock life"...badly.)

"Apple thinks a tiny little screen in the car is the answer, Apple always too small and so much losers. I mean look at those losers with their tiny phones. Such losers..." (20 minute skit of lemmings walking around in circles with tiny iPhones sung to "I'll follow you to the end of the earth" ...badly.

"We think carSplay is the next big thing, literally. It's like a giant google glass system for your car, but with much big Super AMOLED ZZXX v6.234.768 Ultra-Hyper-Super Clear Display Technology. I mean just look at the young girl degrading herself Splayed out between the dash board and new carSplay windscreen adapter (see what I did there). We pay good money for women like that to degrade themselves for our products. Please ogle the next big things...and the carSplay as well."

"Now I know what you're thinking, `Wow, you can get a front facing camera and make the windscreen project the outside world to the inside with Galaxy bloatware overlaid on top, just like Glass.` Well, that's a good idea, but honestly, we didn't think of that at first until we saw the new executive plane, and we made it so that it retracts like a window shade, it's beta...But we now have the schematic from those plane people and our copying machines are on full rip-off mode.

This is for the Volvo Concept C Coupe using that center console NOT the SUV.

Very beautiful ... yet very reminiscent of the QNX Bentley shown off just under 2yrs ago ....

And an HTML app to boot so remote control's work over WiFi/LTE/HSPA/EDGE/GPRS directly to the car ... concept was thought up and began development just before Tesla implemented theirs using Android.

Still great for Volvo and Apple ... looking forward to seeing lots more collaboration and Siri getting pumped up!

just let people do things while the car is moving. We've been setting our radio stations, adjusting the a/c and such for years while driving without issue. Why do we have to be told we can't now? I hate our legal system and the way it penalizes entities that are not at fault for people being stupid.

This. Honestly, the nature of our government's plodding legal discourse is just embarrassing.

i think what we'll have is:
iPhone to the car: Video to the car screen (not mirroring, a second screen with different content); audio to the car stereo.
Car to the phone: Car microphone for Siri; Optional car touch screen input; physical buttons for Siri, phone answer/hangup, up down left right select.

Basically the phone does everything and shows it all on screen; The driver can talk, touch, or push buttons to make things work.

Please no nanny restrictions! Otherwise, I will just stick with docking my iPhone, which will probably come in a larger screen this year, and make CarPlay a moot feature.

The CarPlay UI isn't even going to match the car's normal UI that is shown on the screen. CarPlay is only shown when an iOS device is connected. In a sense, it is only an app. I think it will work fine for most users, but the overall experience is not going to be very Apple-like because car manufacturers are still pushing their own interface.

I know it's a layer on top of the car's OS and that's what I was referring to. iOS isn't terrible, but if I connect it to say a BMW and those iOS icons pop up, it's going to be such an eye sore being totally different than the iDrive UI.

My suggestion for the future is hopefully the UI to match the car's infotainment system is built into the car or something is done on iOS device to change the UI to match the car when it's connected.

That is way way too detailed and complicated a screen layout for using whilst driving and IMHO incredibly dangerous.

By all means have a touch screen for ease of controls, but that's way way too complex with small information on for instant quick use when you are supposed to be focusing on the road and not killing someone.

Aftermarket Deck Support

Macrumors any chance through any of your connections if you can get a comment about aftermarket deck support? Hopeful if CarPlay will have support for any, can't find anything on the subject so far.

Do away with stop signs, for example. Why slow the rest of us down because the stupid would speed too fast through free market intersections? We don't need government imposed on us to keep us safe. :)

<discloses bias: I'm a fan of some regulation>

I think I would remove the 'Maps" icon. Not the fondest of memories, and it still stinks compared to most everyone else.

This could be a huge boom for podcasts. I really hope Apple works on improving the discovery aspect of the podcast app.

I just hope the lawsuit-fearing developers creating this don't restrict the ability to use it while the car is in motion.

I LOATHE systems that do this. Especially since it's often my passenger who is modifying settings, unable to do so because I'm driving.

For the most part, I agree with you. I always prefer educating people in favor of creating new laws.

But we're socialized from a very young age to treat communication with a much different priority level than adjusting radio stations or flicking a switch on the A/C. There's an innate tendency in most people to give phone calls and messages a degree of focus that the radio dial doesn't warrant--and that's focus being taken away from the road and that is a real danger.
