Bit ironic that the person in the video selected the Spotify option rather than iTunes given how much the streaming services are eating into iTunes music sales.

They really need to take iOS in the Car one step further and allow voice control of parts of the car through Siri: "Turn headlights on", "Set cruise control at 75 MPH"., "Temperature 72", "Turn on driver's side heated seat", "Open the trunk", etc.

Chances are Lexus falls under the Toyota brand, similar to how Acura is represented with just Honda (since Honda has alread confirmed Acura's will have CarPlay).

Anyways, knowing that the whole display is not dedicated to CarPlay, I'm curious to see how other manufacturers implement the system into their displays.

I also am curious to see how it operates with something like Mercedes's COMMAND controller/touchpad or BMW's iDrive

It will probably just "highlight" what you would normally press with your finger when you rotate the iDrive knob, etc. It would not be too "Apple" but it would still work, as long as it works with my steering wheel controls, I'll be happy.

Kind of like the way switch control works on iPad/iPhone today.

How about "drive me to Walmart" etc., one day. I bet Google will beat Apple there though with those Prius'

Do away with stop signs, for example. Why slow the rest of us down because the stupid would speed too fast through free market intersections? We don't need government imposed on us to keep us safe. :)

<discloses bias: I'm a fan of some regulation>

Actually we DO need to do away with some stop signs. Four-way stops in particular. They are annoying, waste gas, and impede traffic flow. Roundabouts are the right way to accomplish what 4-way stops poorly do.

MyFordTouch and MyLincolnTouch have been doing this stuff for a long, long time, and without the ugly icons. I'm not sure what's new here....

Is this also the first software product that Apple doesn't make the hardware for?

You must not ever drive in New England. :(

It's complete integration of a mobile OS on a level nobody else has done before. It's absolutely not new, just better, in theory anyway. It just integrates iOS better than the things you mentioned.

When we got out Fiesta I was super excited about Sync. At the end of the day, I found it half baked. It doesn't sync like I want it to, half the time it does;t understand that I want bluetooth and/or USB, and it wants me to dump my entire contacts list into it rather than just accessing that which is on my phone. Of course, these are just my experiences with the thing. Needless to say, whatever the ridiculous number they added to the retail price of the car was, it certainly wasn't worth it.

Great!

Now if only Apple Maps works!
(In my neighborhood (Missouri City) it simply does not work)

At some point (maybe even launch or darn near it) I am assuming we will be able to use whatever maps app we want. Or maybe not. Apple can go either way these days.

Well, it is a Volvo commercial. I assume Volvo had virtually 100% freedom when making it in terms of showing off features.

Most of the video was showing off the damn cabin of the car anyway lol.

Adjusting the speed of the vehicle is something I wouldn't welcome at all. Everything else I could be on board with, though I wonder how much easier a task like turning your lights on would be via siri? Unless the user is handicapped, I would think he/she could manually flip the headlights on far faster than (current) siri takes to process information anyway.

And I find MyFord Sync the most non-intuitive overly complicated software I have ever tried to use.
Even the Ford dealership had trouble showing how to do things.

Apple made software for something... cant remember it right now.

Motorola Roxer phone? "iTunes compatible."

Weird, I've never had an issue with the Sync system... my cars are under a year old though... maybe older systems were different. I do find that Android devices work better with it than the iPhone, especially when it comes to messaging.

I just feel there's nothing new here. The Apple hype machine at work. :)

I do worry that the systems will become way too bloated. As they'll have to eventually support standard bluetooth devices, CarPlay and Google's version for the automotive experience. Supporting 3 systems on one device is going to be pretty daunting, especially as hardware changes so quickly in cars.

Never went as far as trying messaging.
Just the simply setting up took a lot of effort.

Is this also the first software product that Apple doesn't make the hardware for?

I think Apple made some of the hardware for its software, but:

Boeing 777 uses Mac OS for its seat call system.

Bandai Pippin uses a simplified Mac OS on a MB Apple designed, but Bandai itself did everything else.

I just hope the lawsuit-fearing developers creating this don't restrict the ability to use it while the car is in motion.

I LOATHE systems that do this. Especially since it's often my passenger who is modifying settings, unable to do so because I'm driving.

Just let people do things while the car is moving. We've been setting our radio stations, adjusting the A/C and such for YEARS while driving without issue. Why do we have to be told we can't now? I hate our legal system and the way it penalizes entities that are not at fault for people being stupid.
You can install parking break bypass cables to make the car infotainment center think it's always in park. You shouldn't have to, you're right, but it's an option at least.

Who else thinks this is a bad idea?

While driving you need to watch the road, not try to hit the right part of a touchscreen which is in a place where your arm doesn't usually go. In my experience it is much much safer and easier to control the infotainment system with a couple of buttons and a scroll wheel (like Audi).

That is a concern, but with steering wheel controls and Siri, not to mention a huge dose of common sense and vigilance by the driver of the vehicle, it wouldn't be much different than turning on the wipers, turning up the AC, or changing a radio station, is now.

It looks really sleek and intuitive, and I hope that the technical details of this will somehow become a defacto standard, that's open to other platforms for their own versions of it. The last thing we need is another 'format' war.

Job Security For Paramedics….

Hoping this car is NEVER following me down the road; especially if I have to stop for traffic, or a traffic light. This may be worse than booze.

waiting for version 2, bluetooth music. maybe 3 for home network / wifi syncing.

And yet services like Spotify and Beats music are going to be available for CarpPlay out of the gate.

Music sucks over Bluetooth.

This is really cool stuff but it really sucks for most of us who will not be switching to a bew car with this stuff anytime soon. I hope a high quality after market option becomes available that integrates with existing cars that have touch screen navigation. I would really like to be able to use my apps on the vehicle touch screen nav like my TomTom, etc.

It really sucks that manufactures make all these touch screen navigation system with no upgradeability whatsoever making them rather useless in no time.

To be honest, the best thing about that Volvo clip is the accent of the woman doing the talking. I have now watched it multiple times just to listen to her.

I can't wait for something like the AppRadio (Which I believe spearheaded this) to support CarPlay, I am sure it will come out soon enough, maybe AppRadio 4?

fees

Does Volvo have to pay 10% accessory tax to Apple?

Very true. People in Europe understand this. So do people in Boston although they refer to them as "rotaries".

It's time the rest of the U.S. caught up

Imagine swapping out cars cause the screen is crap and has image retention :p

Also does anyone else find integrated apple maps to be a hilarious concept?
