Why does everything have to be a subscription these days? A subscription for weather?
Because the APIs that you pull weather data from cost $.

The annual costs are significantly reduced from the monthly costs. I've been a paying CarrotWeather user for many years now. I find the weather app to be a great replacement for the old Weather Underground.

Carrot's developer is extremely responsive. Right now I have the family plan and several family members using this app.

This app and the Apple Watch? Couldn't ask for better. Absolutely love it. It's been my center complication since the Apple Watch 3.

This new update is pretty cool. There are some subscription plans (annually) that are extremely affordable. I continue to be a happy CarrotWeather Meatbag!

Won’t it stop working soon when Apple closes the dark sky api? Who would buy this anymore
Doesn't this use Dark Sky's API, which is now owned by Apple? Is that likely to change the model at all?

Dark Sky is one of a handful of different weather services that can be pulled from. I believe Dark Sky's API goes quiet the end of this year. Apple was nice to give that a long service after purchasing it.

Fun app, but for the New York City area the forecasts were horrendous. As much as 10 degrees off at times compared to other, more accurate, weather apps available. Woefully bad at rain, etc., as well. Not good at all.

The app doesn't generate it's own data, it uses the same sources as every other weather app (Dark Sky, AccuWeather, etc). So not quite sure how it could be significantly different than others...

$5 a year and I might think about paying for the weather, $5 a month? No thanks.

Edit: $5 a year and I might think about paying for snarky weather! ;)
Tier 1 is $6.99/year or 58 cents a month. I wouldn't recommend going for the monthly rates (way too high).

I love this app so much that I bought the $44/year plan for my whole family to use it. I have always done the annual subscription - for the last few years it was like $27/year or something for the highest tier (only did this to support the app/dev cuz I liked it so much). One of my most used apps on iPhone, Watch, iPad, and Mac.

I'm a big weather hobbyist. I used to love (and donate to) WeatherUnderground before it was bought out and monetized - I knew people who set up personal weather stations for that.

Carrot is great, but I really prefer Dark Sky over it. Here’s to hoping Apple doesn’t discontinue Dark Sky on iOS anytime soon.

Last I read, end of 2021. I enjoyed that app too - despite primarily using CarrotWeather. Dark Sky has acceptable watch complications too. I'm surprised Apple hasn't ingested Dark Sky into the main weather app yet. Apple's weather app still says: The Weather Channel.

They still have the insane, confusing subscription "tiers".
From the App site:
In-App Purchases
    • CARROT Premium Legacy (Tier 1)$6.99
    • CARROT Premium Legacy (Tier 1)$0.99
    • CARROT Premium (Tier 2)$14.99
    • CARROT Premium (Tier 2)$2.49
    • CARROT Premium Ultra (Tier 3)$29.99
    • CARROT Premium Ultra (Tier 3)$7.99
    • CARROT Premium (Monthly)$4.99
    • CARROT Premium Family (Tier 4)$44.99
    • CARROT Premium (Annual)$19.99
    • CARROT Premium Family (Tier 4)$14.99
What any of them do is anyone's guess.
I stay far away from this.

The updated design is definitely welcomed -- I absolutely love it. I've been a user of Carrot Weather for a couple years now. I don't mind the subscription model as I happily support developers (ie. Carrot, Tweetbot & Apollo).

Prior to now, the app was priced at $4.99 with an optional subscription, and going forward, the new version will have ads but they'll be ads for other indie apps or fake products.

A Premium $4.99 per month/$19.99 per year subscription tier unlocks features like weather data sources, notifications, customization, widgets, and Apple Watch complications, while a Premium Ultra subscription for $9.99 per month or $39.99 per year includes all of the Premium features along with rain, lightning, and storm cell notifications, a weather maps widget, and quick data source switching.

Pay for a subscription and you still get shown ads? 😂👎

Just say "No!"

I would (and did) pay 5 bucks for a good weather app. But seriously, up to 15$ per monath (which is more than Netflix), this is just ridiculous.
I do agree that the monthly subscriptions are insane. Anyone opting for those over the significant annual subscriptions would be nuts.

Tier 1 (Monthly): $.99/mo
Tier 1 (Annually): $6.99/year ($0.5825/mo)

Tier 2 (Monthly): $2.49/mo
Tier 2 (Annually): $14.99/year ($1.25/mo).

Tier 3 (Monthly): $7.99/mo
Tier 3 (Annually): $29.99/year ($2.50/mo).

Tier 4 (Monthly): $14.99/mo
Tier 4 (Annually): $44.99/year ($3.67/mo).

I was about to buy this app last night, I wonder what features I missed out on. I have Dark Sky, but since Apple bought them the app has not been updated frequently. Dark Sky's complication rarely updates and is pretty much out of sync all the time with the real current conditions.

Wanted to see if Carrot improves on this, I guess I'll download it now but if it's crippled or has excessive "fake ads" it will be deleted. I won't pay 5 bucks a month for a weather app.

Carrot Weather on the Apple Watch is probably the biggest reason why I use Carrot Weather. Yes, I've noticed even the Apple Weather complication not updating unless I click on it.

I've had a subscription for the last few years - ever since WeatherUnderground went under and never seen ads in the app. This is a surprise to me to read about this ... -- I CANOT stand Ads and if I'm paying anything, there better not be ads.

I switched over to Hello Weather which has a 1 time payment of $45 for all the premium features. I like it more than Carrot, plus Hello Weather does not collect any data while Carrot does.

For all the people kvetching about the subscription, you can do an annual sub and it's only 20/40/60 (15/30/45 if you were already a member). That doesn't seem terribly unreasonable for a well-designed app with lots of fun little customizations and features. Plus I believe there can be some costs for the developer to pull the weather data? Subscriptions are a pain, but developers gotta eat too, so is the solution that Apple buys up all app developers and makes the apps free? I dunno.

I love this app. I've been a Premium member, and have no qualms.

However, I may switch to Dark Sky at the end of this year. The weather sources are drying up (Weather Channel is gone, so is Weather Underground. Dark Sky will close up at the end of the year). It might be the best client out there, but you're only as good as your data for a weather app. I've tried AccuWeather, and for my area it's not the best. And there's no guarantee that at some point they won't close access.

I've been begging for Weather.gov options (NOAA) for CarrotWeather but I guess that's not a simple thing to do? The Dev hinted at the possibility awhile ago but it hasn't appeared.

But yeah, good weather is becoming hard to find - it's all been severely monetized. I still miss WeatherUnderground.

Actually, I see NOAA as an option in the update on my iPad. I may give that a go for awhile. Thanks!

Edit: That's just in the source swap, and even then it doesn't work.

I love the idea of the app and have used it on and off in the past. I remember having two issues with this app. First it was a battery hog on both my phone and my watch. Second it was pretty slow to update on my watch. I find myself always going back to the default weather app as it seems to do enough of what I need for weather info.
