You do realize that's the Family level Tier 4 yes?

The Premium Tier 1 is $6.99/year or $.58/mo.

I understand the need for subscriptions for certain apps as developers work arduously on their apps that provide an ongoing and evolving service ...

... however, I’ve noticed an increase in subscription pricing models especially for apps that used to have a one time purchase price. This trend concerns me.

Apple, if they can charge $5 monthly (and people pay for it), it says much about the current weather stock app. NOT GOOD. What happened with Dark Sky you purchased? I was thinking it would become an official weather app soon.

Same. I expected them to ingest Dark Sky a lot faster than they did. I'm guessing they're paying Weather Channel good $$$.

Pay for a subscription and you still get shown ads? 😂👎

Just say "No!"
This is not true, and one of dozens of examples of misinformation in this thread. How hard is it to read an FAQ? While the pricing structure can be a little confusing, it's not rocket science. It's just incredible all these people crying over milk that hasn't even been spilled.

I went with WeatherMate Pro because I needed a Watch app that showed humidity (since the stock Weather app can't be bothered, and I'd kinda like to know if I'm about to step outside into soup before my morning walk in the summer), and it was the ONLY one I could find that WASN"T a subscription service; just a one-time purchase.

The Watch interface isn't the greatest (takes forever to "update weather" but it does what I need.
Just as a quick aside - you'd be better with an app that displays the dew point rather than relative humidity. RH is not a good indicator of how it "feels" outside, whereas dew point is.

For example, in Florida you'll likely see daytime temperatures above 35ºC (90ºF), but you'll rarely get a dew point above 22-24ºC (72-75ºF) which be an indicated humidity of 47-53% or lower which would give the wrong impression; in real terms, it'd feel absolutely horrid outside. When people say "it was 90 degrees and 90% humidity", they're lying. It's probably never been that humid at that temperature - it just feels that way :)

I've been very happy with Carrot Weather; its features, updates, and performance have been great. I've had no issue with the highest tier subscription so far, and the developer at one point explained why the costs of getting data from different sources was a variable that, in part, drove some of the pricing. But $60 for the family version of the Ultra Premium tier is very close to the discounted price of an Office 360 family plan. Once Apple puts 85% of the same functionality into its weather app, it's going to be tough continuing the subscription, which is a real shame.

$60? It's $44.99? Either that or I'm not seeing something.

Edit: I am not seeing something! Maybe it's my grandfathered plans?

I was a Carrot subscriber until I changed my Apple ID 3.257 months ago. I didn't have any problems with the app's performance. I did think there were too many bells and whistles options. I never got around to buying it again with the new ID. I didn't mind having the option to pay for whatever tier I wanted in Carrot. Since that ability has been removed, I may just stick with the stock weather app.

Interesting; I was going off the pricing in the article, but $44.99 is the upgrade price in my updated app for the Premium Family tier, which is better than $59.99. Thanks for pointing this out. Another reason why I really like this developer!

Amen! :) That said, $60 ... even the way I feel about Carrot ... would be hard... to stomach... lol. I am an ungrateful meatbag, I know.

$44.99 is much better - lol.

On a side note regarding Dark Sky, Carrot. Hello Weather, and Weather Line use Dark Sky as data source for their subscription apps and I have noticed that at least Hello Weather and Carrot have alternative weather data sources being added. Dark Sky still nails it for local rain and snow events where I live. These alternative data sources miss the mark by a wide margin compared to Dark Sky.

I know the developer for Carrot is an active member here, which I appreciate. If he were to offer a one time fee, I would be more inclined to purchase. $20 a year is a lot more than what I way paying previously with Carrot. I don't need the snark aspect of the app.

I think the developer may want to rethink his business model. He may have priced himself out of new customers.

The article doesn't mention the watch app which is what I would use the most.

There was a bug with the app recognizing old users - an update is out today to fix that.

The premium tier ($6.99/year) works with the Apple watch - and is all you really need to get frequent Apple Watch updates with Carrot Weather. The higher tiers are for extra stuff even I don't even use. lol.

I don’t like this update. I bought the old version yet I can only check a couple of locations per hour without it blocking me and telling me I need a sub. Also, it only uses about a third of the screen in landscape on the iPad, it shows yesterdays wether at the top of the weekly forecast, you can no longer use widgets without paying a monthly fee, and the sidebar implementation on iPad is very odd; not nearly as nice as the bottom footer that was used on the last iPad version and on the current iPhone version. I will give it a few days and hope to get used to it, but my initial impression is that the old version was way better for my personal needs and tastes. I think Dark Sky is going to get promoted to my go-to weather app.

I will check it out as soon as my phone finishes charging.

I would be considered a new user since I have a new Apple ID.

When I first got an Apple Watch, Carrot Weather was the only weather app that updated location on the watch in real time. Yes, I had all location services enabled on the watch. Decided to get the subscription to support the developer since it worked the way I wanted with my watch. A few years later I'm still a user and subscriber of Carrot. Until something comes along I like better, I'll continue using it.

Oh, and the subscription model of apps and software is here to stay. Microsoft is reportedly working on a Windows subscription model. Right now I don't see Apple doing this as their hardware is expensive enough. :)

the dev has to pay for weather data from the original sources, like dark sky. it's a recurring cost.
But does it cost $60/year/user for API access? Plus I really don’t like subscriptions that paywall one time features (like better widgets) that have little ongoing development cost (and I speak as a developer).

I really like Carrot - been a subscriber for a few months now - and wanted to note that it's easy to tweak or disable the "snark". Don't let that dissuade you if the app is appealing otherwise. Personally I don't mind paying a buck or two a month for an app that I use everyday and is substantially better than similar ones I've tried.

I think I'm on about year... five using this app? I think when it first came out, it was $7.99 CAD. That was on the pricey side at the time.
The things I appreciate? The current snark on world events, and general look at what the weather is going to do... I think somehow it was using data provided by Environment Canada, but not certain now with this release depending on Foreca if the data will be accurate... but who am I kidding? at most we're talking 3 degrees difference between what the screen reads and what it is actually outside?

I'm glad that the developer has frequently kept the app up to date. Transition pieces to Apple Watch, aware of the different hardware choices, and introduced widgets, AR, all of that stuff when they were available with the OS.

I dislike the complication on the watch being a bit outdated sometimes... unless I click it, but.. seems every app has this issue. Apple limits the amount of times a day complications can be updated. -something I really want addressed in future versions of Apple Watch.

Would I spend $5 CAD a year on this app? Maybe. Nothing more than that though.

At first I was a bit apprehensive about subscriptions for weather apps. However, I am using this trial and am quite impressed with this app.

Question, what is the next best data source besides Dark Sky since it will be removed eventually?

I have used Carrot for several years and never paid for the premium tiers. I paid for the app when you had to pay for it and found the free tier to do more than enough. For those against paying for it, you can still enjoy the app without paying a cent if you want.
