Aaand... uninstalled.

Nice update visually, but previously free widgets now require Premium? Hell no.

Back to default Weather app, seems to be more accurate anyway.
CARROT Weather (reddit.com)

There's a temporary work around for this until a fix comes out for this.

So I guess the "free" widget (from being a previous purchaser) isn't customisable at all? Because when I click widgets in the app, I just get the options of premium tiers.

I would have happily paid up to £5 for a re-purchase of the new version, but even the discounted £15/year is too much for a weather app. Everything is subscription now and it's ridiculous.

You change the widgets from the home screen, not from the app itself. I'm assuming you should be able to still swap those out being that you paid for the app. Try a long press on the widget and then select Edit Widget.

I really want to like this app. I tried in the past but the subscription model for a weather app was too much to stomach since all I was after was a specific watch complication. Might dip back in to see if it will fit my needs but I'm assuming I'll stick with Dark Sky for now.

Please stop with the "I really wanted to like..."

Recently I wanted to know what's the weather like, so I looked through the window and it was snowing.

Am I doing it wrong?

While that's a good way of doing things - weather alerts can let you know of storms coming. For example, on my way to work, I drive up a massive incline of thousands of feet. When the snow levels drop to 4,000ft or below, I know that my drive to work will be severely impacted. People have been trapped on that freeway when it snows for 8+ hours.

Receiving weather alerts on my watch and phone has benefited me significantly - especially for high winds (power outages) and flash flood warnings when I used to live in the High Desert (California) - every time we have one, someone always dies.

What I like about Carrot Weather is that I get a 5 day forecast every time I glance at my watch - that is constantly updated.

Note the "winter storm" we're looking at having tomorrow. I've already gotten high wind, flood, and thunderstorm alerts for my area. And that freeway to work? It will be something I avoid tomorrow.

Why does everything have to be a subscription these days? A subscription for weather?
I went with WeatherMate Pro because I needed a Watch app that showed humidity (since the stock Weather app can't be bothered, and I'd kinda like to know if I'm about to step outside into soup before my morning walk in the summer), and it was the ONLY one I could find that WASN"T a subscription service; just a one-time purchase.

The Watch interface isn't the greatest (takes forever to "update weather" but it does what I need.

Fun app, but for the New York City area the forecasts were horrendous. As much as 10 degrees off at times compared to other, more accurate, weather apps available. Woefully bad at rain, etc., as well. Not good at all.

you can change the source.

carrot is an interface for different sources, not a source in itself.

I love this app. I've been a Premium member, and have no qualms.

However, I may switch to Dark Sky at the end of this year. The weather sources are drying up (Weather Channel is gone, so is Weather Underground. Dark Sky will close up at the end of the year). It might be the best client out there, but you're only as good as your data for a weather app. I've tried AccuWeather, and for my area it's not the best. And there's no guarantee that at some point they won't close access.

at the end of this year dark sky may be sherlocked anyway

Going back to dark sky. carrot has had me "restore purchase" of my original $5 buy a few times now. I guess they "keep forgetting" and want more subscriptions

If you like the graphs but not the snark, you might want to give my app a try, WeatherGraph. It also uses different data (National Weather Service). One drawback is it only works in the US.

I wonder how much of this subscription trend is a result of organic developer interest or Apple highly incentivizing developers to go subscription. I have a feeling it's the latter.
Definitely, but also that the community is trending this way now, with a definite push from apple. I think it’s becoming harder to win people over with paid major release updates (like Tweetbot before version 6). Subscriptions are of course going to annoy people more but it’s a steadier stream of income.
