Stupid question but isn't all this extra weight in one corner going to make it uncomfortable to hold? All the weight would be pushed towards one corner and unevenly spread across the back of the device?
I'd say they gave up on them being awkward to use when they started making phablets.

This whole "who has the best camera" race in which Apple actively participates has become so ridiculous in the recent years, that we now have cameraphones instead of smartphones, and we are capable of taking photos and videos in a quality that vastly exceeds what we actually need.

Amen. I love that I have a good camera in my phone and, by all means, they should keep innovating, but I actively dislike that it has all become about the camera all the time.

I'm fairly convinced this isn't something people outside of tech forums really care about. No doubt people want a decent camera that takes good pictures, but we've reached that peak. Everything else, for now, is just vanity.

I routinely take pictures with my SE1 (yes - the one from 2016) that people comment on (positively)...

Friends are usually dismayed that great photos are achievable from such an "old and small phone".

Newer and better cameras are always a nice to have -- but the photographer and some basic situational photography knowledge makes a big difference as well.

We are way past the point of the cameras being "amazing" and super satisfying for every mom out there looking to snap 150,000 photos of junior -- about 145,000 of which won't ever even be looked at again.

God I long for the days of being around parents and kids when we weren't just taking a frickin' photo/video of every bloody millisecond.

Relax parents. Try to just live and enjoy and not worry about capturing every breath.

Until a few days ago I was still using the iPhone 7 camera quite regularly and, while I definitely and absolutely can see the leap that is the 12 Mini camera, in many ways it was still good enough.

I don't have kids but lockdown has increased the family by a kitten and your third paragraph there hits a little too close to home. But you are absolutely right, I doubt 95% of people will ever truly require what current cameras in smartphones are capable of and, for many, we are deep in diminishing returns territory.

I for one hate the bigger is better trend that cameras are now part of, alongside the screen.

Periscope lens… periscope lens… anyone? Anyone?

The one (main) feature missing to bring me back to the iPhone fold. And keeping my icons along the bottom rows for these ridiculously-sized phones that you people have forced upon me but, I could live with that… for now 😉

It seems there are people that care a lot about cameras and people that don't. Why not put the big-ass cameras only on the Pro series and keep the normal iPhone like it used to be? Then everyone can pick the one they prefer.
Isn't that how it is now anyway?

One day we will reach terminal velocity

Interestingly, Light's technology was actually featured in a smartphone: The Nokia 9 PureView (see pic below). Alas, as with their standalone camera (pictured in your post), the performance was underwhelming. Thus they've now turned to the automotive market.

Mmmm they really should just have 1 Camera that can do it all. Along with optical Zoom of like 10x or so. Cause seeing phones with more Camera's and bigger bump. Surely make the phone look a bit awkward. Just my thought on it. Though im still looking to upgrade my iphone 11 Pro Max to this next iphone.

The cameras actually do need a lot of improvement and I have a 12 Pro Max.

Improvement for what? Make your own documentary for the Emmys? Ofc every camera could be better, the sky is the limit here, but do you honestly think that the vast majority of iPhone users need a 4K 60fps HDR video recorder in their pocket, instead of for example a phone with more battery life, slimmer and lighter body, etc? Apple is using all these (small) camera improvements as main selling point for each new generation and the people are buying it because they are used to. I bet that most users will struggle to distinguish random photos taken with iPhone 11 and iPhone 12 even in side-by-side comparison.

I’d absolutely rather have better camera performance than slimmer or more battery life. My 12 Pro Max is plenty slim and already has way over a full day battery life. I charge it every night, so I don’t care for more. Looks like I’m right too because Apple continues to push cameras and silicon for image processing more than slimming and bigger batteries. People want epic cameras.

The camera sensors aren’t large/sensitive enough to capture enough detail to make pictures look good anywhere except on device. Even on a larger screen iPad, the pictures are noticeably bad in many cases. Blurry, over-processed, unnatural, and in general needing improvement. In a visual world, cameras are the most important thing. Video is significantly better on iPhones than photos.

The Pro models can afford to pack more features without sacrificing battery life.

Non-Pro buyers would appreciate longer battery life more, especially mini users. Maybe Apple should make non-Pro models thicker with more battery? They're already lighter due to aluminium body anyway.

I bet you could extend that back a bit further actually.

If you take out FakePortrait mode shots, people would really have a hard time distinguishing photos over the last several generations.

Two more sensors. A 50mm 1.2 and a 300 mm telephoto 2.8. Apple discovered a way to bend light so you no longer need to carry a camera with a 6-7 pound telephoto

They should just spread it across the entire top on the back (would also help with the wobbling of the phone due to the camera bump being on one side).

All iPhones last a day. Charge at night. You’re good.

Why not one amazing CCD and a series of fixed zoom lenses that rotate into place. The rectangular phone with a square bump is getting quite boring.
