I would buy an iPhone X 4” SE for $500 or less. I don’t mind a smaller screen. But it’s hard to convince myself to buy an iPhone X priced device. I could get the LG G6 with some small compromises but still pay like $250. The $550 LCD 6.1 better be a reality because it’s hard to justify $1000 for a marginal upgrade.

True, but most people do pick up the phone to use it. I’m not a huge Android fan, but most newer models out there have the sensor on the back and there doesn’t seem to be much backlash about them in general.
I think we both know that iPhone users are more precious about their phones so if anyone is going to complain it’s them.

Incorrect. You don’t understand the point of the iPhone SE in the first place. It was a global phone that Apple intended to be for countries like India and China where smart phones are exorbitant in price and the cheaper price of the SE was meant to be affordable in countries to increase sales worldwide.

However, Apple did mention during the 2016 March Keynote that the SE was intended for those who did want a smaller iPhone, but the price was very _relevant_ as one of the main considerations why it does not have some of the latest technology. Regardless if you don’t care what it cost, others do where smart phones are not affordable for them.
Apple never stated it was a “cheap” phone. Their case was that it was the size that mattered to consumers. Not price. So theoretically they could charge whatever they want and put whatever features they want and consumers who want a small form factor will pay this regardless. I say, load it with all the latest technology and charge more. I’d rather have a small phone with a bezeless display and Face ID at £600 than a phone which lacked features and cost £329 again. Apple are clearly not scared to bump up the price of any iPhone regardless of size - see iPhone 8 and iPhone X.

But at the same time, Apple didn’t call it a flagship or treat it like a flagship. The SE was released in the first part of 2016. The SE2 probably won’t be a mini X.

I never insinuated it was “Cheap.”

That’s not true at all. Greg Joswiak commented during the March 216 Keynote that the goal was to bring in an affordable entry-level iPhone with a small form factor, so it was really a two-fold situation to benefit the consumer. But if you look at the SE as a global phone, it more than exceeded Apples expectations, which they were pleasantly surprised by the sales themselves.

So theoretically they could charge whatever they want and put whatever features they want and consumers who want a small form factor will pay this regardless.

If Apple charged whatever they want, then what would they have accomplished by doing that? The SE had to retain an affordable price point to be obtainable in countries like India and China where smart phones are exorbitant in price. For those who desired the SE, they don’t care about the latest technology, they care about the form factor and size. The SE was never really about including the latest technology.

Thanks for the informative post. Apart from third party articles, I’d appreciate if you could show some sources you’ve mentioned in your post to further my knowledge on the matter. Thanks

I think it not the question of if this will happen, but more when Apple will bring Face Id to iPhone SE form factor. Apple will certainly do it sooner or later. I believe it will eventually make it into iPads and MacBooks

China iPhone sales much different from that of the U.S. In China and HK, iPhone buyers buy the top of the line models, not the SE! India is different story and SE is competitive.

Unlike some iPhone die-hards, I had a smartphone life before iPhones, and I'll have quite a nice one after as well. The SE brought me back to an iPhone. When Apple does away with it, they'll lose me as a customer.... not that my single purchase matters. :)

It matters.

I’m gonna throw this out there: what if Apple decided to place a fingerprint sensor in the back? Possibly inside the :apple: logo?

Its a no go. Fingerprint sensor in the back is the worse design ever!

If they'll take off the home button and can't implement the TouchID under the screen the same as the Chinese company did (this will be ideal), at least they should move the on\off button to the side like iP6-7-8 and double its usage as TouchID.

I’d rather have a small phone with a bezeless display and Face ID at £600 than a phone which lacked features and cost £329 again.

FaceID is not a feature, its a compromise. ;)

If they released something that looked like that render, but with all the same features as the 2018 X, I would definitely consider it. As others have mentioned, I do wish there was feature parity among iPhone's, just with different size choices. $699, $799, and $899. Seems reasonably priced and gives everybody what they want, less confusion among models as well. Also, for those complaining about Face ID... it will only get better. It's not perfect as is, but works well in most situations. Improve angles, landscape, and speed each year and it's going to be perfect. There is no going back to Touch ID.

Normally, I would agree with you. But for the SE, absolute top priority is that the external form factor does not change in order to keep using cases from the 5/5S era.

Imo cases are so cheap that would be a non factor for me. The camera quality is high on my priority list.

I'm not saying that I don't want dual lenses. I'm saying they have to fit in the cutout that my old Spigen cases have. I literally scoured eBay for original cases released with the iPhone 5 in order to get the colorful backplates and put them on a new TPU portion. I'm also not saying that I'm not insane, either. lol

And you're 100% right, cases are cheap generally speaking, but for whatever reason, Spigen decided that fun colors died when the 6-series phones were released:
