Case-Mate Preps for Release of iPhone 5 Cases with Revamped Design

would it be totally out of line to say that all these iphone 5 design rumors could actually be the new ipod touch? i mean, they look EXACTLY like the current ipod touch models, with the exception of being slightly bigger. wouldn't this design for an iphone 5 be a step backwards?

You may be right, but Apple seems to know that Average Smartphone user wants his/her phone to be stylish, have a big screen and lots of Power. If Apple doesn't provide that, me as an Apple fan, would surely jump to Android (probably Galaxy Prime). Most of the users would do that. But Apple is not fool, they now want to shell out an iPhone which would again be the King-of-the-hill in smartphones for at least 6-7 months or so. After that, they may put some more juice with same design, same as 3G-3GS. I have my fingers crossed on this one. Hope Apple don't disappoint us.

At this point, I'd say no one has a source. We'll know when it gets announced. Anyone that was right in the end will have been right only through sheer luck.

I'm convinced all other parts pointing to a 3.5 inch screen were for a 4s and that apple will release a 5 that's 4 inches, we've seen rumors for both sides and honestly, why not embrace them both, I never said the 4s WON'T be 3.5 inches, I'm just saying that with all this new "evidence" (Obviously this evidence isn't being held in my hand so I too have to take it with a grain of salt, but at some point it becomes pretty apparent and we can stop acting like nothing is true and come to the very likely realization that what we're seeing is what we're getting) but all this new information coming out in the past 2 or 3 days even all point to an iPhone 5 that has a 4 inch screen, all the info we saw prior to that probably points to a 4s that's 3.5 inches. It has been speculated since before March that apple would release two iPhones.

power pads are or will soon become a thing of the past. There are serious radiation leak concerns that coincide with conductive wireless power. There's far better and safer wireless charging technologies available these days than those charge pads of the early 2000's and they're getting smaller by the day.

perhaps you're correct in that the current technologies are too large, but we've all seen apple's patents on incorporating it into their iMacs, perhaps they've gone one step further and figured out how to make it small enough to hide plugged into the corner outlet at this point. safe, room ranged wireless power has been around for at least 2-3 years now.

I dunno, HP's TouchStone works as a stand for the HP TouchPad on top of charging it. It's dual purpose really. No need to have room range wireless charging, my phone doesn't yet float in the air. Just give me a sort of stand/pad to sit it on and I'm fine.

Who's to say that the new iPhone 5 and the new iPod Touch won't be the exact same design, just one won't have ability to make calls? Just look at the iPad Wi-Fi and the iPad Wi-Fi + 3G.

iPad and iPad 3G... its still an ipad. iphone to ipod, those are different beans. with the iphone 4, apple stepped away from a similar design to the ipod touch. why would they step back with an iphone 5? makes more sense to me that this is actually the next ipod touch. slightly bigger, more features, possible 3g integration (like the ipad).

I'm trying to keep my sanity...
I just can't rationalize Apple's delayed launch of the next iPhone and iOS5 for a simple update (almost exactly like the i4).
But until it's announced we just sit in anticipation. If its got a bigger screen, consider me in line. :D

I bet they're making these, and gearing up to make a lot of them, just in case this design turns out to be real. I have it on excellent authority that case-makers know NOTHING about upcoming designs; in fact, they rely on leaks and rumors to know what's coming. These designs to me represent a hedged bet. They don't want to be so far behind the pack if this is the real design. If it's not, then they've only lost a few thousand dollars, as opposed to missing out on many thousands of dollars in profits.

Bleh. I love the current flat slab of glass/steel/glass. By far the most beautiful smartphone in the marketplace right now. It looks like a million bucks. Pure minimalistic elegance. I'd hate to see Apple retire this design so soon. :(

Bingo !

before anyone else quotes me I want to sort of mention that I just think it's stupid for people to think that the rumors they heard are somehow more valid than these newer rumors from more reliable companies such as casemate. In the end they're all just rumors, but honestly I don't even think we need to call those cases rumors, I think it's fairly obvious.

C'mon MR -- Case Mate isn't working off leaked Chinese documents. Their stuff is top-shelf, sold at the Apple Store itself. I'd bet significant sums of money that they have access to all details of the iP5 right now from Apple (possibly an empty shell or 3 in addition to the specs) to ensure a robust ecosystem of iP5 products at or near launch.

This is the real deal, IMO.

when, in the history of iphone releases, have you been able to purchase accurate cases on day one from someone other than :apple:?

most likely, casemate has no clue what the next iphone looks like and this is nothing more than a marketing ploy:
"step 1: make an approximate guess on when the invites are going to be sent out... mid september seems to line up with the current rumor mill.
step 2: release some mockups based on the chinese case stuff at least a day or two prior to when we think the invites will be sent out.
step 3: wait until it's clear that one of the rumor sites has screen grabbed
step 4: take it down and reap the benefits of having our name blasted across the internet for an estimated 1-2 days"

posting photos and ripping them down does not mean they were asked to... but it sure does a great job of making people think that :apple:legal could be the only possible reason

"But it is interesting to note that even relatively major U.S.-based case manufacturers are investing in designs for cases based on this form factor."

It's true that they're investing, but it's in tooling and molds only. They won't produce anything en masse until the day the new design may or may not be introduced.

Wireless charging basically requires a specialized pad which is bulkier than the dock connector cable and the current AC charger. Wireless charging would have to provide some sort of improvement to the end user and I don't really see a strong case for it at this point. It's more of a novelty than a real-world feature enhancement.

I agree. And calling it "Wireless" is not quite right, because it's only the last few inches that are wireless. You still have a wire to the charing pad and you need to put your device on the pad. It can be more convenient to throw your phone on a pad than slip it into a dock, but not a whole lot more convenient and you need more space.

It's most useful when you want to seal the device.

Maybe these cases are for the fifth gen iPod touch?

The iPod touch has always had the mute switch on the right, so maybe these cases are for the new iPod touch and not the iPhone 5?

Yes, it would make more sense if they could include room-ranged wireless power into things like the AirPort Extreme base station, AirPort Express, maybe Time Capsule, Apple TV, Mac mini, etc.

My guess is that the first Apple device to get wireless charging wouldn't be the iPhone. It would be a peripheral like a mouse, trackpad or keyboard. While they would still operate on batteries, Apple users with room-range wireless charging would never have to change them.

I wish apple would keep glass on both sides... it's almost one year and my phone looks brand new.

I agree completely. The only thing I'd like to see changed is adding a slight bit of texture to the rear glass. I always pull this iPhone out of my pocket pinching both sides for dear life. Love the look, and mine also still looks brand new, but...

2 Things..

With these charge pads or whatever, how do you account for your phone say, doing its job and ringing, while its on the pad? do you then pick it up regardless of charge % and lose the cycle? I'm kind of OCD about making sure my devices charge to 100% and then are unplugged to maintain battery life as much as possible.

Also, all to all the "couldnt these just be for an iPod Touch?" people. If apple had the technology to make a 4in screen and device that was up to their lofty quality standards and release it as an iPod, why would they then NOT use that technology in the iPhone? seems to me iPhones are the dominant device (in terms of sales), definitely not going to see an iPod out do an iPhone.

So if the design is not correct - what are they doing with these? Or are these only "studies" without commercial value? Are they being produced or are these prototypes?

Case Mate and others are proactive with designs and tooling, ready and waiting for production. Other than test units to prove tooling and molds, nothing is produced in quantity until Apple confirms the final design.

Ahaaaa,
I have an idea, I believe this is the new iPod Touch, because if you notice, they NEVER show you the front, they just show the back,
So yupppp, its the iPod Touch 5th Generation

That would actually be GREAT news. Because if the touch looked this good, the iPhone would surely look just as good, if not better. Apple would NEVER have the iPod Touch out shine the iPhone.

BUT I believe your theory is wrong based on the headphone jack and apparent mute switch.

I brought this up a second ago in the other thread about how Macworld Asia is mentioned..

I think it's going to be very likely that we see the unveiling there.. seeing as media will already be there and let's face it: once the news gets out, it's going to be all over the web and front pages. We don't need a press event here in California for that. Apple's broken plenty of 'cycles' so far, just chalk this up with the rest of them.

Actually, with all the press around Apple making a big push to get the iPhone into China, it would make sense to announce it either at the MacWord Asia, or at least do the press event during that conference.

You'll have to fix your OCD if you plan to use current wireless charging then. That's how it works on the TouchPad/TouchStone. Pick up the tablet and it stops charging. Set it back down and it starts charging again.

The iPhone already is in China.

The N94 iPhone 4S that everyone keeps talking about its a SPRINT IPHONE 4.

S P R I N T........

The iPhone 5 is on schedule and the N94 iPhone 4 will be introduced to Sprint and Chinese public this year. Along side the iPhone 5.
The 3GS is out the door soon.
Apple has already expressed the difficulty and expense of producing a laminated glass front and back iPhone.

Expect an iPhone 4 sprint/chinese model to have a nice polycarbonate rear or cheaper acrylic backing, not laminated glass.
The iPhone 5 will pretty much look like a tiny iPad.

How do I know.
Don't ask.
