i'm still not entirely convinced they'll ditch the current nano body style. i think the fat-nano is really a new model - hopefully the rebirth of the mini. ...most people i hear really want the ipod touch. ....
I am thinking the same more or less. While this iPod might be real, I don't remember anyone having any official designation on it's name. It could as easily be a mini as a nano.
If one makes the (fairly safe at this point) prediction that there will be an iPod touch in a similar form factor to the iPhone, then of course these things will be fairly expensive. They will be top of the line devices for people who want to carry huge amounts of video and music with them. Perhaps the "fatty" iPod is just an iPod video device at a lower price point and less storage. Many folks might want to take the occaisional TV show on the train to work but not be so fascinated as to focus their entire lives around the device.
This makes the new video iPods (both the touch and the fatty), just plain old iPods. i.e. - it makes the entire range
video-capable, and provides a full selection of price points. Given that video is "the future" as everyone is saying lately, this makes perfect sense. They will no longer have any iPods that won't be able to play videos on a big enough screen to be practical.
This makes the question of what if anything they will do with the old nano form factor on Wednesday very interesting. Are they going to be the only iPods that don't do video? I mean they kind of could do it now, but the experience will be lame compared to even the fatty. Will the nano join the shuffle as the "audio only" range of iPod devices? The rumours run from the old nano being discontinued, all the way to some kind of cool nano based iPhone.
Personally, I am still hoping against hope for a nanoPhone based on this patent:

It would be a way of keeping the form factor but still jazzing it up a bit with the new OS interface we have been seeing in the youtube videos and a basic phone functionality. It would connect to all the old nano gear like the Nike stuff and be a good replacement for all those folks that want an iPod just to store a few gigs of music and be handy and small. The phone in it would just be a bonus.
The main argument against them doing anything with the old nano form factor is that we have heard no rumours of manufacturing at all. Since the event is Wednesday, it seems just as likely that they do nothing with it, as it is that a surprise nanoPhone will arrive.
