I demand to be called a European-American! :p Actually, no. I demand simply to be called an American , sans hyphen.

Actually South American's think that is presumptuous of U.S. citizens to call themselves Americans. (Like we are the only Americans, and not the south americans...

Just giving you a heads up.... :D One thing that MR has taught me is that being politically correct on a multinational forum is very difficult. ;) :)

True--I had a spanish teacher who mentioned that once. "United Statesian" doesn't quite have the same ring. Man, being politically correct is not exactly easy.

I totally agree. Personally I think alot of people are way to sensitive  and are just looking to pick a fight... But a minimal politically correctness has to be learned by everyone, but there is no definite line between normal PCness and Extreme PCness. I just try to be accommodating as I can and learn not to offend people...

I am Armenian and Greek.

Caucasian clubs are fine. What is the difference if its a Caucasian club or an African American club. Blacks just like to be called african americans because its more "politically correct", even though many are not from Africa.

Most white people are from Europe, and there is TONS of culture in europe.

And if whites have no culture, how come all we study in school is Europe, Greece, Armenia, Turkey, etc.

We don't ever talk about the African American heritage and the "great civilizations" they built.

As an Armenian you are one of the few who could legitimately use the term Causcasian to describe your heritage. Armenia's location in the Caucasus region would actually make the term fit. It does not, however, describe most European-American's heritage. It is a term used to falsely place people into a very unscientific category of "race." The caucasian "race" is a concept used by some very unsavory political movements, including the Nazis, to seperate human beings into superior and inferior categories. That is why the term raises concerns. These kids could have nothing to do with these racist ideas or movements, but a school should be concerned if they are being organized around on campus.

As to the great civilizations of Africa you could start with Egypt, Zimbabwe, Mali, etc. and spend a lifetime in learning their contributions to the world. An overview of these civilizations might help fill in some gaps in your knowledge.

Lastly, it is not political correctness to call people by the name they wish to called by. It is good manners.

Yeah you know I think I will need it. Most people do.

In my view, its only the "African-Americans" that have been raised in the U.S. for a generation or two, that wish to be called "African-Americans".

I think if you went down to africa, they wouldn't really care what you called them.

Kinda like if a group of mexicans came to america and called us "white", we wouldn't care.

louis CK on political correctness:

"I just heard that 80% of the people living in NY are minorities. 80%! Don't you think that once it get's to 80% we should stop calling them minorities? *chuckle*

I mean...you could take a white guy to africa and he'd be like "look at all the minorities over here..." "

:D

i don0t know what i should think about race based groups.

i would be rejected by all of them.

i should be euro-latin. not liked by northern europeans, soutthern europeans, i'm not british for sure, and not 100 % latin (south american) either. i have skin that looks white, that turns yellow, brown or tanned easily. i have oriental cut blue eyes, and know a lot of people who define themselves as "blacks" but are whiter than me. maybe most casualties caused by the latin casualty added to the euro casualty. .. i am a perro.

UK makes it easy for me to feel ok. im not british but i'm not a weirdo. US is ok, as there are so many people with mixed bacground that no-one makes a big problem for my .. well, whatever background. :)

Well, some statistics I saw said in LA area 40 % of people are White. 46 % Latin, thus whites are the biggest minority ...

I have heard of that as well...although I read something like from CNN or someone that caucasians would become the minority in like 2016 or something.

Sure if you're talking about New York City residents, but New York State as a whole or the US as a whole is something different. Context is everything tazo.

Why would anyone make such a stupid comment? Lack of knowledge of the world I guess.

Yes, CA, TX, FL and NY will be much more diverse 10-15 years from now. It'll be interesting to see the changes that will occur as a result of this. Is America ready for it?

I am not sure that statistics for minorities in the US is so different...I would be interested to know the statistics for the US currently.....

And as for Louis CK's comment, it was meant as a joke, after all he is a comedian.

tazo -- There is no way the US is 80% minorities.

Big cities -- Yes.

Middle America -- Hell no.

LOL i never said that the US was 80% I quoted a comedian who said something like 80% of residents of NYC were minorities....

I also said I would be interested to see what the percentage of citizens of the US are minorities...I really don't think the US is far off from caucasians becomign a minority.

I could of course be wrong :p

According to the 2000 census there are 211,460,626 people in this nation who identified themselves as white versus 35,305,818 who identified themselves as Hispanic. You can do the math if you want, but it doesn't seem like whites in America are going into minority status anytime soon.

California and other states are a different matter. 20,170,059 whites and 10,966,556 Hispanics.

As of the last census, I think California was 50% white, 50% minorities.
(Correct me if I'm wrong--I don't have exact figures)

Actually, minority means minority of the power. As in more older, white, males are heads of business and state. So the country can be 99% black/asian/latino/arabian/whatever and/or 51+% women, but if more white males are in positions of power everyone else becomes a minority.

Kinda like Africa was for awhile (kinda still is, unfortunetly).

It was funny, but it was just a joke ( but it was funny :D ).

edit: The joke was funny, not the Apartheid in Africa. That's not funny. That's a bad thing.

mactastic, if you look at the figures you posted a little closer I think you'll find that the "white non-hispanic" population of California is 46.7% of the state population. The 20,170,059 includes "hispanics" in the total. With this census California became a state with "minorites" in the majority. At least that's how I read the figures.

edit: here is a CBS News article that reads the census the same way only they round the figure off to 47%.

as far as agenda is concerned

how are we defining culture and ethnic?

are we discussing it in terms of country, region, skin colour?

i can understand creating a club/society for people of a particular country for it helps preserve heritage in forms of food, dancing, music - aspecially in large country's like Canada and the US where there are so many people from different countries that it is easy to loose that heritage

that to me is like a club for christians to meet other christians
or photographer having a club to meet other photographers
even apple users having a club to meet other apple users

but a club based on skin colour?

that seems ludicrous, what would be the point?, seclusion?

if you live in US or Canada, unless you never leave your house you will more then likaly to meet people of other races, deal with it, and exept it

if you continue to only see, white, black, yellow, green, red, purple, whatever, you will never see the bigger picture.

skin colour does not define intelligence, maturity, social behaviour. or anything else that STUPID and IGNORANT people can come up with.

on the MACBYTES.COM website, does it matter what race someone is, no do we respect non the less what they say, yes

we may not always agree with what people post, but when we post reply's we do not attack on a bases of race, we attack on a bases of content, so if we base writen word on content, why would we base our social interactions on race.
