Too bad the ASUS card doesn't have eSATA ports - it'd be great for an external array or port multiplier cabinet. I'll have to get a SATA to eSATA bulkhead with it.

I was a little surprised as well that it didn't include an external eSATA/SATA port. Maybe a powered hybrid USB 3.0/eSATA 6 Gbps would have been nice too.

Sorry if this has been asked before (in fact it probably has), but what's the probability of quad cores being put into the 15" MBPs?

IMO, there's not much point at all upgrading until they start putting quad cores in. Arrandale provides about a 30% boost in power at max. A quad core on the other hand gives you at least a 100% boost. I personally prefer having a C2Q over an i3 or i5 in my notebook.

looking at Dell, HP and Intel's sites it seems like all the new i5's and i7's are quad cores

I agree in principal but the details are more likely i7Q, underclocked low power version of 34nm die shrunk (tock) model. If Apple does that we can not only see a MacBookPro quad, but the 17" model could potentially have TWO of them, a SSD, and stupendous I/O including LightPeak, USB3, FW800 and 10GB Ethernet. There currently is not a sufficiently fast wireless standard, but striped dual channel 802.11n could replace at least two of those plugs and Apple likes that.

Only Xeon-branded CPUs will work multi-socket SMP.

If Apple did put two laptop quads inside, they'd have to run as two separate systems - not as one shared memory/IO SMP system.

Few questions when buying new macbook pro

Trying to build a new macbook pro and think this is what I want:

15 inch macbook pro
# 2.8GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
# 4GB 1066MHz DDR3 SDRAM - 2x2GB
# 500GB Serial ATA Drive @ 5400 rpm
# SuperDrive 8x (DVD±R DL/DVD±RW/CD-RW)
# MacBook Pro 15-inch Antiglare Widescreen Display
# Backlit Keyboard (English) / User's Guide

Few questions for you more experienced apple users out there.
-Is it worth upgrading to 8gb of memory from 4gb?
-What about upgrading to 3.06GHz from 2.8GHz?

Thanks for the help ahead of time

Is it worth upgrading to 8gb of memory from 4gb?

First of all, there is no way I would buy a new Apple laptop before Jan. 27th. No one knows if Apple will update its laptops at that time (or before), but it's not a gamble worth taking.

As for RAM, the more the merrier, but 8 gigs may be overkill for your needs. I'd try 4 and upgrade to 8 yourself later if you find a need.

What about upgrading to 3.06GHz from 2.8GHz?

Not worth the price jump in my opinion.

Guess your right

Just getting antsy and need a computer bc my old powerbook g4 just bit the dust. Guess I could buy one and as long as its within the 2 weeks window of the 27th, I can return it only for a stocking fee if something new comes out.

Also, because the 27th seems to be about a "new apple product" any chance that they still announce upgrades to MBP's?

If I can wait 5 months for new Macbooks you can too. :p

This is Apple here folks. While I can dream that i'll be able to upgrade my Early 08 Macbook Pro for something with comprable power to a 1,000 dollar Dell it probably won't happen. Apple will put int he semi-old low in tech and charge us 2k for it :(

But we can dream. Here's hoping for a great ATI 5 series card, quad core, and some real meaty power. They need to make the 13 and 15" MBP without discrete graphics be the low end models and start taking us power users back into the tent with some higher end 15-17" discrete models.

But they know that people like me will keep buying even without because we like the Apple ecosystem.

(Edit) Put's on fanboi armor for the inevitable "Apple hardware is quality and cutting edge for the price at the time it is released" arguments.

Damn you

I think the chances are very good indeed.

Damn you Laguna. Your like the voice of reason. Now I have to wait until the 27th.... unless I buy one within two weeks of that and can always return it. Please tell me im right??!!??

I know, I know - it's torture. But the pain of waiting is milder than the pain of regret. Trust me - I bought a 24" iMac back in June. :(

Apple always seems to manage to fall short (often painfully short) in the GPU department, but you're right - we can dream.

Tick-Tock

Intel has never made custom CPU silicon for Apple before.

The MBA CPU was on off-the-shelf CPU chip put into small form factor carrier that was already in the Intel pipeline.

Yes - the "Tick" is Nehalem. The "Tock" is 32nm Nehalem.

Most of the old Core iN desktop chips are 45nm - the Tick.

The 32nm chips, also called Core iN, are the Tock.

Check the specs to be sure, some Core i5 chips are 45nm, some are 32nm.

Tick, refers to the increase in transistor density, a shrinking of process technology.
Tock, refers to the change in microarchitecture.

See: http://www.intel.com/technology/tick-tock/index.htm
and: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Intel_Tick-Tock

 Thanks - I corrected my post, and wound my cuckoo clock (it's been going "Tock-Tick" for a while.

I didn't change mine. I like being wrong. :)

So I guess we will not have a server farm inside a MacBook any time soon, eh?

Your sig is fine. Free speech matters. Your advocacy would actually succeed if you would stop using the reserved term "marriage" and simply call it something, anything, else. Bible thumpers will NEVER get over it.

Why intel used itunes in a video comparing Core i5 and Core Duo, at CES?
What's wrong with intel uses itunes? Nothing, but they had other heavy applications available in windows.

Precisely! That's lamentable. And true... To me Apple is a Lamborghini with a Smart engine. Naïve as I may seem, I want a complete Lamborghini experience: these compromises are too unpardonably below my standards!

One explanation is iTunes' fast-growing sluggishness. Especially in all operations involving a tethered iPhone or an iPod Touch! Thanks there, too, Apple!

......

I have the early '08 MBP 17" too, I'm waiting til Apple releases a MBP with USB3/SATA6Gbps/LightPeek to upgrade. My last upgrade made the wait a bit more tolerable, which as the OCZ Vertex SSD. You might want to consider upgrading to an SSD to give your system one last boost. It's a very noticeable boost.

Steve Jobs is a perfectionist he has a vision of what he wants the next iteration of his products to be like. If it's good enough for Steve to release then it's going to be good. Apple has managed to pleasantly surprise me most times yet. How about some trust for Steve lolz :apple:

The 17" MacBook Pro that I want:

  • i7-820QM CPU
  • 16 GiB RAM (DDR3 1333MHz)
  • ATI Mobility Radeon 5870 1 GiB
  • 64 GiB boot SSD with separate bay for 500 GiB standard drive
  • 4 USB 3.0 ports, 1 eSATA, 1 FW1600 and 1 FW3200 port, ExpressCard 32/54
  • Built-in 3G modem (Gobi chipset)
  • Intel WiFi card, with antenna inside the screen bezel along the top
  • Battery that will last over 9,000 hours on one single charge ;)

It could be done, but will it? I hope so.
