there is no way you're getting 40 hours of HD playback. And is it 1080p playback? A pc on a full charge playing back 1080p on its screen would give you about 45 minutes. The industry is BSing the consumer right now cause a lot is at stake to move into a new arena and make them investors money.
But besides al that, Apple has their media ecosystem and a loyal programming community that knows Apple will take care of them and aid them into making money. Did that Nvidea tablet or the HP tablet folks talk about developers and ecosystem?
And some of you say you're exhausted from seeing so many tablets. Ba humbug. Tablets are all industry. My friend uses one when she works at 7-11.
Apple's tablet will have been at least a decade in development while all the s*** we've seen at CES is some rebranded junk, rehash bull**** that has been around for years. Add a lil pinch, accelerometer action and you can daze and confused suckers all the way to the bank. But Apple will have the software tailored fit for their tablet while all the other leaches suckle on MS's OS. Like always.

This has been the case for a while now, the computer world is changing and some people dont like it.

15 years ago if you had a Computer at home you were a Geek, now if you dont have a computer your a Cave man.

The industry is now Fixed on the average person who is not that computer clever, doesnt want to control the world with their computer, and has a very short attension span.

Its no suprise to me that the latest incarnations of windows & mac OSX are smaller, faster and dont give you lots of new features, they simply try to make the old features easier and better to use.
Your outlandish premise has lead to an even outlandish outlandish conclusion.
News flash Harvard psyc major, have you seen the size of the install space needed to install windows or OSX? And if you need more features, then get some 3rd party software. You can then have features coming out your nose! Oh, blame the chips for the speed boost. I could go on but you're too much of an easy target.

I don't know about Windows but Apple seems to be catering too much to the ignorant user rather than the average user.

Nonsense: do you consider yourself an average user? No way. The fact that you take the time to post EVERYDAY for the past few days proves that you are not an average consumer and neither are most of us on this forum.

The average user of Apple content consumption oriented devices such as the iPod, iPhone, Apple TV and (if you believe the direction the rumors are going) the Tablet, than the average users are these (probably not complete list):
  • School kids and students
  • Middle to upper income adults with not a lot of time on their hands
  • Our parents
I´m talking about averages, not us exceptions here on this forum. The groups mentioned above make up the vast majority of the market for the mentioned Apple devices and Apple is very smart at targeting their products at these groups.

Each of these groups do not have the time, knowledge or patience to go around playing with settings, searching for applications on the internet or in electronics stores and doing things like jailbraking, which frees up the device but creates other problems of their own.

They want to buy the product and plug it in and go (just as the mouth-to-mouth marketing of Apple advertises).

This may not work for you, but you are a member of a (although granted large) minority. Some of us should accept that Apple doesn´t make these kinds of products for us. They do it for the group that they can expect the highest revenue from, and that is not from a group that will ask e.g. to circumvent the App store.

Oh. Now I'm re-excited about the Apple slate/tablet+new 3D GUI rumors. I wonder if the next Apple product entering our home will be an extra MacBook Pro or the new tablet. Now, let's Fast forward >>.

Is Tegra2 stronger than 9400M?

Sad but oh so true

This got me thinking about Apple and how they don't appear at places like CES, and why. It's because they want to be better, more refined, and more grandiose than any other manufacturer. That presentation was good, but if you compare it to WWDC it was awful! Scattered applause, two people presenting, no hype. Apple in contrast, even when they released the 3GS which was pretty much identical to the 3G, had mad applause! This is because Apple put great significance in building up hype and excitement. Not only that, but they make sure that their products are going to live up to the hype. This is why it's 'late.' because it's not. They are waiting to launch something bigger, better, and more amazing than anything we have ever seen with regards to tablets. How I see it is that they've learned from the iPhone release and this time done it the other way around. Where iPhone was released and loads of manufacturers released 'iPhone killers' afterward, this time they are waiting for everyone to bring out their tablets and then they are going to launch the tablet to kill them all.

The product is made by Foxconn... like the Mac Mini, iPhone and iPod Touch. Remember? Apple prototype? Now blow up the video and read this: "APPLE" (in the top left corner). Hello Stevo! Prototype?

I agree. I consider myself an average user. Not interested in tweaking, jailbreaking, messing with settings or otherwise. I just want a cool device, great or innovative content which I can get to easily - especially my music, movies, photos, etc, and I want it mobile enough to be with me when I don't want or need my laptop. Plus I want to show it to friends and have them say either "wow - I should get a mac" or "you're a loser, I'm sticking with my windows device". Whichever. If it's a nice product, I'll buy it. And if it becomes the focal point for the living room...awesome.
:)

All name-calling aside, these iPhone-ish looking tablets actually have all the marks of a huge bust.

For their size they don't do enough to make them worth toting about, and their execution is awful. Too much emphasis placed on specs and silly animations.

As the posts at the time of the iPod introduction remind us, Apple is not just about innovation but just as much about execution.

Apple could enter the screwdriver market with a plain-featured tool and still revolutionize that market with an amazing user-friendly design that turns granny into a home improvement advocate.

My first thoughts were: Apple has lost the PR battle here... Other people have shown their tablets/tech before Apple and now Apple will just look like followers, not leaders... But then i thought; Apple must have known people are demoing this stuff at CES, after all, the industry seems obsessed with Tablets at the moment, so i wonder if they made the decision that these tablets would just increase the tablet hype and they were confident their tablet is far superior to all others... mmmm...

I'm really looking forward to seeing Apple's tablet. I already have an iPhone and a laptop so i don't think i'm the target consumer for these things as all the functionality i can conceive is already covered in both of these devices... So, why is it i still want one? LOL ;)

Wow! As a gamer this is great news. My only fear is that (as usual) Apple is hostile towards "real" (PC/console level) gaming. This seems like it would be more of an evolution for Direct X.

OR it could spell the end of DX dominance if Open GL ever gets up to spec?

Does anyone know if the device NVIDIA was showing runs W7 or Android? It sounded like he said Android.

At this time, ARM supports Google Android and Unix based OS like Linux and iPhone OS. FreeBSD is in active development to fully support ARM. Windows 7 doesn't support ARM processor at this time but I'm sure that you'll see it on the ARM in the near future. Microsoft advertised Windows 7 as being an OS that can run on any modern hardware. Lastly, Steve Balmer is a business man looking to make more money for both him and the company.

... And why are these being called "Tablets" now. The other day Balmer said they were now called "Slates".

A "slate" is a type of tablet PC, specifically a tablet PC without a dedicated keyboard. The term "slate" has been used in the industry going back to the Dark Ages of the Personal Computer (the MS-DOS era).

So, I don't think Balmer was using the term "slate" to try to sound more "Applish" anymore than Arn was trying to sound more "British" when he used the word "amongst" vs. simply using "among". ;)

Amongst the tablet hype at CES, NVIDIA made a major announcement on Thursday introducing their latest Tegra 2 mobile chipset. ...

Apple's tablet is NOT going to rock the industry like the iPhone did in 2007. These may not be up-to-par with Apple's offering but they certainly have the form factor in place.

Steve Job's pet project should have been released last year. He's late.

Good point. With so many tablets and ereaders, even colour ones. Apple is definitely late to the game. Normally they are the market leaders but even the fabled haptic feedback touchscreen is already been shown in the dual screen reader. What other new tech is there to show?

Personally speaking the only area where Apple really shines is in the physical design and software side. Make it look sexy, make it easy to use, and the brand is second to none. So selling it on second hand is easy too. Hardware wise they are always underpowered compared to their pc/android/symbian counterparts. Apple make it easy to get access to the power upfront and personal, make the computing experience a joy to use and come back to again and again. After suffering the bugs, patch updates and timewasting problem solving, you'd be hard pressed to want to go back to that kind of computing existence.

No it's because if you're Apple or anyone who wants to make a stand out impression you don't huddle together with the masses. You rent out the biggest auditorium you can find, tell the world you're announcing the latest and greatest and build the hype.

Comparison with other products especially on the hardware side is something Apple don't want you to do, because more often than not they lose out in that department. You don't want to be cavorting with these no name manufacturers who think they can make a buck out of the ebook market just because they beat Apple to the market by a few measley months. In the grand scheme of things no one will remember this silly Plastic Logic Que Reader except a few die hard ebook reader fans.

iPhone killers? There still isn't a legitimate iPhone killer and it's been 3 years.... You talk about killing too much... seek therapy.

Somebody tell me the size of this tablet and the Price?

I can't see any info on the page though..

With all these tablets hopefully Apple prices their's competitively! I'm sure their's will probably be the best. I just don't think the average person will spend $1000 on one. I think the ones the companies are showing off at CES will be fairly cheaper. I'm not saying it won't sell, I just don't think it will have mass market appeal at $1000.

I know everybody is saying the iPhone was $600! I know because I bought one... Then I remember they cut the price shortly after!! When it first came out I only saw techies like me with them. But as soon as they got to $199 everybody had them! Hell my mother has one now lol. She loves it!

I think they should release it for 700-$849...but that's probably not going to happen. :(

For many the SD card slot is a loss of useful features

My thoughts exactly. But it happend before: I think it's useless and boring. Until I see the product. Then everything changes. :)

Yes, but look what he took off of the 15" model. Now the 15" as well as the 13" is just a small screened iMac that can run off of batteries. That means no easy expansion of the PCIe buss. Now ony the 17" model can be easilly expanded.

That's because it hasn't been annouced yet. Come back on the 27th for real info. Though speculation has been rife, most expect a tablet size of 10-11 inches. Price wise I think it could be anything from $800 to $2000. I don't think it will be as cheap as an iphone.

Unless nVidia is going to drastically change business model then it doesn't have a price it's a one off for them to show off what their new chip could do. If your an OEM they might sell you a reference design.

It really doesn't matter if Apple releases their tablet before or after other corporations because Apple will be delivering on their own vision not the vision of others. For example, there were many smart phones before and after the iPhone but so many corporations fall victim to not following their own vision. Thus, they are always playing technology catch up with Apple.

PowerVR

Seems to me that Apple will be using PowerVR graphics, and the Cortex A9 plus all the glue from PA Semi to create a system on a chip like the Tegra.

Nothing against the Tegra, but Nvidia isn't a vertical integrator as Apple is, so expect some substantial architectural differences between the two chipsets favoring a particular tablet implementation.

What I find most interesting as we look forward to a future of ubiquitous tablets, is who along with Apple will be winners, and how the table size variations play out.
