With all these tablets hopefully Apple prices their's competitively! I'm sure their's will probably be the best. I just don't think the average person will spend $1000 on one. I think the ones the companies are showing off at CES will be fairly cheaper. I'm not saying it won't sell, I just don't think it will have mass market appeal at $1000.

I know everybody is saying the iPhone was $600! I know because I bought one... Then I remember they cut the price shortly after!! When it first came out I only saw techies like me with them. But as soon as they got to $199 everybody had them! Hell my mother has one now lol. She loves it!

I think they should release it for 700-$849...but that's probably not going to happen. :(

iPhone is only $199 because of subsidies from ATT. Thus, ATT pays Apple additional monies for each cell phone subscriber. If you were to purchase the iPhone unlocked, then you're easily be looking at $600+ for the iPhone in other countries. In short, Apple is making much more than $199 per/cell purchase and the original iPhone their were zero to know subsidies offered by ATT.

this all doesn't seem right. normally apple pave the way with a totally new product that takes all other companies 12-18 months to a create a 'killer' that will be better than apple's product, then apple brings out something totally new, and the cycle continues.

now it seems like every tom, dick and harry has got in on the tablet/slate act and apple are gonna have some competition right from the start. wonder how this one will pan out?

Jan 27th event:

1) MacOS Slow Leopard sales numbers
2) Introduction of iLife X
3) Introduction of iWork X
4) iPod touch "best gift this Holiday", more than 10 Million sold!
5) iPod Touch with camera introduction
6) One more thing: iPhone 3GS 8GB ("Because it's highly demanded!")

Later that evening, telephone conference:

Analyst: "Steve, why hasn't Apple introduced a tablet/slate like everyone expected"

Jobs: "Well, we didn't make the rumors out there. While we are researching in slate technology, we still think that the current tech isn't ready to take off. And most slates are now be sold at prices between 199 and 500 dollars. You can't make a good device for that price. That's why Apple isn't in that market YET. We only make perfect products."

Later: Macrumors posting: "Apple to SOON announce tablet" -> 1000 comments in forum

Apple almost never comes out with something first. iPhone wasn't the first touchscreen smartphone, iPod wasn't the first mp3 player, AppleTV wasn't the first media extender/player, Newton wasn't the first PDA, Mac wasn't the first GUI based computer....

What they do do is arrive a little bit late and REDEFINE the product category, usually successfully. If the hype is right, that's what's going to happen with the tablet as so far sticking Windows 7 or Android on there isn't that exciting. Anyone can do that.

:) Maybe pre CES, but post CES I can't see Apple not bringing the iPad Touch out. There are so many options now that if they don't bring something out, they will lose part of that pie. If last year was the dawn of the ereader, this year is going to be the rush hour. The problem with netbooks is that they are so cheap so they is not margin to be made. The same can't be said of ebooker readers. Look at the irex, kindle dx, anything larger than the standard 6" is in the $500 - $700 region. Add colour, add app store, add gaming, add Apple's unique design and interactive touch system. Well then you can start charging upto and over $1000, add OLED $2000.

Tablets are just another stupid product to get people to buy things they don't really need. Whatever.

Its good to read all the tablet speculation at the moment. Its going to get a lot quieter once the Apple tablet is revealed. What will we speculate about after it's release? Someone start some rumours quick!

I think Apple needs to use the Tegra 2 in their iMacs (If possible?) to replace that damn 9400M.

That's a very cool video, but all these tablets are too big to fit in a pocket, which means to take them around with you you'll have to put them in a bag. And if I have to do that, I feel I may as well have a proper laptop with me instead.

The power consumption figures are pretty sweet though.

Depends on what type of pants you wear..:

They run Android or Linux. Windows doesn't run on ARM.

arn

Unless I'm very much mistaken, Windows Mobile runs on ARM CPUs.

A rather pedantic statement granted, but it's still a Windows OS in the same vein that iPhone OS is a derivative of the Mac OS X fmaily of OSes.

I don't know about Windows but Apple seems to be catering too much to the ignorant user rather than the average user.

That's become the problem lately. Apple has become the new "1984". Remember the famous commercial where they claimed to free the masses from the clutches of "Big Brother"? Well, they've become what they sworn not to be.

I think Apple needs to **** and put it up without being coy. It's one thing to be cautious about corporate secrets to protect intellectual property and have a competitive edge which I can understand but to play "coy" is juvenile.

Their computers are great and I have the old school G4 desktop which still works well to this day. But if they continue to act 'conservative' without any of the bold approach to experimentation, then it shows they don't have balls.

They may be very intelligent people working behind the scenes, but do they have balls?

EDIT: I'm not also agreeing with Apple catering to the 'average consumer' but saying people seem to worship the company to the point of 'god like' status. The company is run by flesh and blood that can make mistakes, bleed or die.

then i hope it's something better than just reading newspapers and magazines on it along with music and videos. i can already do that for free on my iphone and other computers

I thought the Iron Man 2 preview was exclusive to apple:confused::rolleyes:

http://ironmanmovie.marvel.com/

"watch the trailer only on :apple:" :D

Exclusive is one of those words that isn't really useful on the interwebs.

What happens is Apple arrange to have something 'Exclusive' and that gives them the right to have it before anyone else is allowed it. Normally the embargo only lasts a day or two and then anyone can show it. Of course different territories have different rules. Just because a US company has an 'Exclusive' doesn't mean that another country, the Netherlands for example, can't show the video.

In this case it's obvious that the official website for the film would also have the trailer. Most other film sites would now also have picked up the trailer as it's available on the EPKs (Electronic Press Kit) indicating that any exclusive contract has now expired.

Apple is just lazy and hasn't removed the 'Exclusive' image.

That link to the old iPod announcement was incredible. I just figured this site didn't archive that far back. The conversations are the same. Most people were looking in one direction while the Apple slight of hand was doing tricks in the other direction.

People really hated that iPod reveal. It was so pooh-pooh'd! At the time, mp3 players were a total joke, too. The iPod was the first real mp3 player that made it easy and enjoyable to archive, transfer, and play music. It was the moment all those Walkman disk and cassette players got thrown collectively in the trash.

Sorry, it was an attempt at humor. I think the lazy people would be IM2/Marvel in this case, as they are the ones with the info.

As for exclusive or privacy on the internet there are no such things....

It was nice to see a "slate" that works...I really hope :apple: has one more thing...

Alent,

Sure anyone can do that on the iphone or laptop/PC, but the 'slate' device supposedly has a unique way of interacting with reading books, papers, and mags. Not in the way you think it would be but probably slightly different if not drastic.

It may have more multi-touch functions than the current laptops and iphone/ipods have. My suspicion is the integration of FingerWorks old multi-touch keyboard design built into the tablet. And for someone who posted in another thread saying you can only hold it vertically is plain wrong. I expect it to have accelerometers to allow users to flip it around vertically/horizontally. That's blatantly obvious.
