whats the story?

is it me or did macrumors just combine a bunch of who cares stories together in hopes there was something people would talk about?

It's not okay to use "compete" as a euphemism for "rip-off"

Don't get me wrong, I'm not looking for a patent lawsuit.

But they're blatantly saying "we are trying to make products that *look* like apple products but are way cheaper"

From a design innovation standpoint, isn't that pretty lame?

It is actually designed to compete with the mac mini and 27 inch monitor, not an iMac. And it doesn't look particularly innovative from a design perspective. Very sixties look, if anything needs a lava lamp beside it.

Anyway, the reason the Vizio CEO mentioned that he was making his products as much like apple as possible is that nobody would have paid him any attention if he just said " here are our cool new, well designed PCs." That would not have generated any articles except for a paragraph on the bottom of page 125 of PC World. Maybe.

In other words, he was trolling.

Will Vizio use Windows or some custom Unix derivative?

----------

is the iPhone 4/4S made of Gorilla Glass? because you always hare about it shattering...

I didn't realise that CES caused so much ire at MacRumors. I've been looking forward to both CES and MWC this side of the year.

Well, I guess my problem with this is the fact that Vizio's CTO actually stated that they are "making products that look like Apple's, but are cheaper". Very strange choice of words if you are not trying to actually copy Apple's designs. I think he could have chosen a better statement. Maybe, "Our products will have a very distinct design on par or better than anything you've ever seen"?
I don't know, his words just ring of actually admitting, we are going to copy Apple's designs and just use cheaper parts. Competing is definitely OK, but I think Vizio's CTO needs to choose his words a little better to distinguish his brand from "just another cheap Apple knockoff".
I would agree with that. He should of chosen his words better.

Vizio should stick to Televisions.
Why, have you used their computer? So basically you're talking out your 5th point of contact.

Of course it's lame but I believe, as stated above, he should of chosen his words better. If you put those side by side with apple products wouldn't you be able to tell the difference? Of course. I also bet the average consumer would also be able to tell they where made by 2 different companies if the names where not on the devices. Kinda like the samsung tablets and iPad... sorry but any fool would be able to tell them apart... you must question those that wouldn't be able to.

I will restate what I said earlier with this change... I will buy their laptop if it runs windows. I like my wife's MBA but am NOT a fan of OS X.

Yah, lipstick on a pig. If it runs Windows, a fancy design for the hardware won't make a difference.
I always laugh when someone says something about windows. How many of you mac boys/girls are running windows on your machine? Lots of you so it must not suck that bad. Just because YOU don't like an operating system that doesn't mean its a bad operating system.... just like sales numbers don't make it better. (guess which one sells more more ;))

Wonder if Apple has patents on their magic trackpad.

Vizio looks like it's going to make one too.

Adding to this point, apple did not invent nor patent the multi touch track pad. It was invented back in 2003 and released to market in 2005 by A company called fingerworks. The product was called Igesture and compatible with windows.

As apple does very nicely, it bought over the company bringing with it the technology due to its potential in the mobile industry for the release of the iPhone.

I have no idea whether they patented the mobile technology or if there is ongoing patent battles regarding this technology, but the track pad for a desktop isn't a "required" method of input therefore not worth the money to protect.

Vizio's TVs offer good performance, and good value for the money.

There's nothing inherently wrong with them, and they've been successful appealing to consumers who don't want to pay top dollar for one of the more established brands.

That said, some find that, in an age of disposable electronics, Vizio lives on the extreme edge of that trend. Parts availability, and thus repairability, can be issues and render a relatively new TV an immediate candidate for the landfill due to the lack of replacement parts.

And, while Mr. Wang has successfully captured his particular segment in the TV market, the computer market is somewhat different, in that it has greater competition for those consumers, and those customers have a greater need for aftersales support.

If success was predicated solely on snazzy hardware design and lower pricing, the others would have already made bigger inroads into Apple's territory. Apple competes on more than just "price and looks."

Ultimately, Vizio will just be another in the crowd selling Windows machines.
If anything, they will just cannibalize some of the higher end market from HP, Dell, etc.

Interesting mix of opinions about the Vizio pictures… not to mention some confusion over whether that angled box on the right is a desktop PC or a speaker(?)

Aesthetically, I think the keyboard looks great with its industrial-minimalist look. But for me, the other stuff just demonstrates how hard it is to mimic great design. To quote Steve Jobs (describing Microsoft's early attempts at mimicking the Mac OS GUI in Windows), 'they just don't get it'.

Yay! Finally a cheaper alternative to an iMac. Hopefully this thing will be about, say, £1000 cheaper? Should be.

The whole faux bronze is stupidly ugly, and the rounding makes it look like a fisher-price toy. and that stand should be rotatable with screw holes so it can be wall mounted. and that tower is too oddly shaped to be accepted by the public. it needs to be short and fat, not tall.

I had honestly never heard of Vizio until reading this article. I guess they're not popular in the UK yet

I(for anyone wanting to know) 'm gonna wager the desktop pc is hackintoshable. It looks like the motherboard is in the base so we are likely to see laptop components (ulv intel i CPU and hd 3000)

OK, I'll play the role of the idiot. (Not really a stretch - typecasting).

I had a 37" Vizio TV. It worked fine. Picture was quite good. Not as good as my Samsung 47" LED LCD - but not bad at all.

Also (wait for it), I think the desktop looks pretty good. I have no idea how well it works or it's reliability, but I think it's form factor is, IMO, attractive.

I don't know about the guts of the machine, but I think the design is visually appealing.:D

It won't have a bottom bezel (Or any bezel) and it's base stand will be the same as the iMacs stand. it'll also be the same color as the iMac.

Apple LOVE bezels though.

I agree it may be on an iMac stand, but that's going to have to be a wider version

Even if that Vizio stuff looks amazing, it's still going to be running an inferior operating system.

Hackintoshable is a pretty small market. Vizio, an American company, says it has been working on Mac copies for over two years. Hmmmmmmm. Very good chance we finally may have discovered the source of the legal financing behind the pizza boys' expensive lawsuit to run iOS on clones.
