Glad to see the DisplayPort 2.1 is enabling all these hiDPI displays but they are still just cloning Apple - 5K at 27", 6K at 32". I'd love to see a retina 21:9 ultrawide (which would be 6720x2880 at 34") - just hoping such a panel is going to appear.

" high contrast is now defined by Dell as 2000:1 LOL. that is so totally not high contrast. Here are the specs from Dell, overall pretty meh:

31.5" Dell U3224KB - Specifications
  • Display: 31.5 in, IPS, W-LED, 6144 x 3456 pixels.
  • Viewing angles (H/V): 178 ° / 178 °
  • Brightness: 400 cd/m²
  • Static contrast: 2000 : 1.
  • Refresh rate: 60 Hz.
  • sRGB: 100 %
  • Dimensions: 713.7 x 475 x 58.4 mm.

Not sure how one can call that big turd on top of the monitor a 'built in webcam'. It's an eyesore.

That's what most monitor manufacturers fail to understand: Apple products are beautiful and aesthetically pleasing if not always (almost never) the most cutting edge devices. And the people who buy Apple products understand that and pay a premium for quality industrial design.

I think this is the second monitor I've seen in as many days that purported to have a built in webcam that was really a carbuncle glued on almost as an afterthought.

Quite the 5head on that bad larry. I think Lenovo's solution for a webcam attachment is a bit more elegant, I'm also not entirely opposed to the magnetic Logitech solution on the XDR either. Built in peripherals on stuff this expensive really isn't a good long term solution. Resolutions change, components can fail, sensors improve, etc.

Being able to rotate the display 90 degrees is great, but not when you’ve got a massive bezel and huge cycloptic lens.

Dell is looking to take head-on Apple's $4,999 Pro Display XDR with a new 32-inch 6K UltraSharp display that has a built-in 4K webcam, a variety of ports, and an included stand that rotates, swivels, tilts, and more.

The new "game changer" display was announced this week as part of CES and is the world's first 6K display with IPS Black panel technology, according to Dell. With the new IPS panel, the 32-inch 6K UltraSharp delivers "high contrast and deeper blacks." In actual specs, the display is 6,133 by 3,456 pixels with 223 PPI (pixels-per-inch), slightly higher than Apple's Pro Display XDR. The Pro Display XDR is 6,016 by 3,384 pixels with 218 PPI (pixels-per-inch).

On the back of Dell's 32-inch 6K UltraSharp display, there are a variety of ports, including Thunderbolt 4 with up to 140W of power delivery, USB-A, ethernet, HDMI, and DP 2.1. On the front of the display, there is also access to two USB-C and one USB-A port through a pop-out compartment, providing quicker access to connect accessories and peripherals.

Unlike the Pro Display XDR which does not come with a stand, Dell's display has a built-in stand that can swivel, tilt, rotate, and move the display higher or lower depending on user preference. The display also has a built-in 4K webcam that uses AI to improve image quality and keep users in the frame during video calls.

Dell says the display will be available later this year and has not provided any pricing details for the display. Apple's Pro Display XDR costs $4,999 for the standard texture version and $5,999 for the nano-texture version. The Pro Display XDR's stand must be purchased separately for $999.

At CES this week, Samsung also revealed a 27-inch 5K display that will compete with Apple's Studio Display.

I welcome the competition and options. The design is a bit frustrating but there may be a customer base with practical needs that appreciate it nonetheless. Looking forward to more of these higher resolution options.

With a money guy at the help, Apple is so easy to beat with innovation these days.

I’ll tell you what real innovation looks like: a 5K iMac in 2014. Deployed to millions of Apple users for a decade. Only now 9 years later we’re starting to see affordable bigger-than-4K options for PC plebs.

There's just not much HDR content. There are a few games that support it, but this would be a poor choice for a gaming monitor for other reasons, such as its low refresh rate. Very few YouTube videos are HDR. The web doesn't support HDR images and graphics.
HDR is a gimmick, just like 3D was awhile back.

Great to see some new alternatives coming out. Personally the aesthetics of the monitor don’t bother me at all. I’m not obsessed about bezels and protrusions generally.
Yeah, I don't understand the hate for the bezel. It's not like it's white. The only time I care about the bezel is if I need to position two displays together, then the bezels are more in your face. Otherwise it just fades into the background and I don't even notice it.

Smart of Dell and Samsung to get in on the 5K and 6K display game before Apple refreshes the tech. Both offerings look very competent and I'm looking forward to reviews when they finally make it to market. Competition is great for us consumers, as can be seen the Dell and Samsung offerings come with stands that can rise, swivel, tilt, etc... Apple needs to step its stand game up.

Does anybody else thing that the photo in the article looks like a 27"? That can't be a 32" in the photo.

Including a stand? That will make many people unemployed whose job it is to hold the display for eight hours a day.

After having a pair of Apple Studio Displays for almost a year, one setup in landscape and the other in portrait mode, with symmetrical bezels all around and no logo anywhere on the front, I can definitely say that the days of having non symmetrical bezels on a display are gone for me. Those bezels on the Dell and on the new Samsung S9 are ugly as hell and for sure a deal breaker for me.

On both models, the VESA mount is a piece of machined H-shaped Aluminium. So it's an extra component; the basic stand isn't bolted to that.
...why do people rush to give Apple credit for their self-inflicted "form over function" design flaws? Almost any other "prosumer" monitor will come with a height adjustable stand which can usually be removed and replaced with a VESA mount.

So Dell created a display to appeal to Apple customers, but somehow screwed up the most important spec—why would they make it 223 ppi instead of 218? It makes absolutely no sense.

The Studio Display, like the iMac, comes with either built-in stand or a VESA mount. Both are basically attached to the back panel by an internal mounting system only accessible from the inside (requires dismantling the display). On both models, the VESA mount is a piece of machined H-shaped Aluminium. So it's an extra component; the basic stand isn't bolted to that. So pricing aside, you're not actually getting anything 'extra' with the basic stand. The VESA mount bit is probably cheaper to make than the stand, sure, but hey. Apple can't be bothered 'discounting' the VESA mount option by the slight difference in cost. So; you probably are getting a slightly 'worse' deal if you go for a VESA mount version. Meh. I did for my iMac, and I'm not bothered in the slightest. I have greater mount options, you see? That's worth more than a probable £20 or so 'discount'.

The stand situation with their monitors boggles me. Why not just create a common mount point, even if they don't want to make that VESA? Seems odd that you can't get a superior stand if you wanted to spend the $1000 for the XDR's stand and pair with the Studio Display; you'd have to buy a vastly more expensive display as well. The fact you can't swap the Studio Display's stands after the fact seems like extra work and manufacturing effort on Apple's part as well versus making it more modular.

Would the slightly different resolution compared to the XDR be an issue for scaling in macOS?

Depends what you mean by "issue." It will certainly not scale perfectly, unlike the XDR and Studio Display.
